Do you flush your plants before harvest? What's your reason for doing it? Will you still flush after seeing the information in this video? Edit: Lots of people asking why I crossed out the word cannabis and replaced with MJ. The reason is because I am attempting to abide by KZbin's policies. KZbin often censors, shadow bans, issues warnings, and issues strikes for content revolving around that particular plant :(

I started growing using GH nutes. In the early ninetys. There were some off the wall people growing. And the cheaper the better. Ground up dog food in water... etc. I think this was the original flush reason. LOL

@@urbanfarmer6865 I'm running Nectar For The Gods and they recommend flushing with their Herculean Harvest (liquid bone meal) and SLF-100 (enzymes) but bottled organics and especially NFTG is different from ammendments (Mr. Canucks decreases the amount in his last ammendment of flower) and completely different from no till (don't flush)

What they call a flush is what many call leaching. This study proves that the plant doesn't need a feeding for the last two weeks since the mineral content didn't change in flushed vs non-flushed plants. Again, the plant doesn't need any additional nutrients beyond what's in the medium for the final 2 weeks. So if you're feeding your plant nutrients in the last two weeks, then you're over-feeding your plants. Great study! Thank you!!

You need at least 2 weeks in soil since it’s not direct like hydro. But I can see this rule working as I flush for 7 days hydro and it works as normal.

Look at Cation exchange capacity or CEC in coco. Coco does hold nutrients and it does need to be noted that a flush is beneficial When working with Coco aswell as soil.

@@GardenTalkwithMrGrowIt I think its better teach how to achieve grest percentage of resin. Yields is uselles, without resin content. Example: is it better a 20% big cola or 30% small buds? The right thing is calculate how many grams of bubblehash u can achieve each meter. More important that gr/watt that is good to know if u sell buds. But for quality only, u should teach how to achieve the maximum percentale of resin that is OPPOSITE of big kolas. In other words: quantity over quality. Who cares about quantity in a meter only grows? A good result is 160 grams of bubble hash each meter for example. Quality is more % of resin not bigger buds (that are the opposite of quality in my opinion)

I would like to see the different in inert media vs soil/organic. Im sure in soil it takes much longer to truly deplete the soil, with a hydro setup you could more easily see how much dialing back and when affects growth and by how much.

As a 73 year-old lifelong gardener, I have followed science (mostly peer-reviewed studies) to guide me in terms of my gardening practices. I believe this approach has saved me significant waste in time and money by avoiding the many "myths" in growing my products. I am new to cultivating cannabis and in doing my research as to how to grow this product, I've noticed that there is a dearth of scientific, peer-reviewed tests as to how to optimally grow this product. Almost all information is anecdotal. If there's one thing I've learned in gardening, it's that anecdotal advice is worthless.Yet, contrary to my opinion, there are devout and passionate followers of certain approaches to gardening that simply ignore evidence-based studies on their particular topic. I am familiar with the study that you're discussing in this video. And I agree that this study is "a step in the right direction": that is, home growers need much more evidence-based advice. For me, since I know absolutely nothing about cultivating and harvesting cannabis, I'll follow the conclusions of this particular study. I don't expect that experienced growers will give up their particular methods. If you've been flushing for years and you're happy with the results, why would you change ... that's tough to do. For me, it's easy: I won't bother.

@@dustin2250 I grow my veggies primarily in raised beds. I've found if you keep your methods really simple, it's much easier for figure out why one crop fails in a particular season (sometimes, there's no explanation other than a seasonal variation that a particular crop or strain doesn't like). As for cannabis cultivation, I was given a clone two seasons ago. It was a photo period of unknown strain. I grew outside it in a 7 gal. pot. It grew to about 3 1/2 ft tall. I won't go through all the details but through lack of attention and knowledge, I didn't get very large buds. I was successful in making four clones - two of which I gave away and the two others I grew the following season. The second season (with my clones) wasn't much better than the first - for the same reasons as in the first season. I can say that I had a great success in making my clones. I ignored all the obsessive and over-complicated (in my opinion) advice on the web and simply plunked a few cuttings into some potting soil. The cuttings had been lying around for a few days after my first harvest. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised that all four of my cuttings worked. This got me thinking that maybe this cannabis growing thing is simpler than everyone makes it out to be. Probably. As for your vegetable garden: keep it simple. Put about 3 or 4 inches of quality compost on top of your beds at the end of each growing season. Don't bother cultivating. In the spring, plant your seeds and/or seedlings into the compost, cover with a mulch and water only when you think your plants need it - over-watering is the most common mistake. Expect some failures - these happen to even the most successful gardeners. Hope this helps. Cheers.

@@dustin2250 Im using hydroponics. I change the water every 7 days in flower and veg. When your in the last 3 weeks of flower do a last change and after another 7 days use chlorine ( a similiar product like purolyt will do the job) once. Now when you reached the last week of flower change the nut solution to ph 6.2 osmosis water. Combining this with reducing the light cycle starting on day 2 of last flower week for 6 hours and doing the same until you have a three day dark period which ends into harvesting in the morning (I know this is said to be a myth)

I am an elder new grower who needs to do the right thing/process to make certain of very smooth non-harsh product, due to health issues. I cannot enjoy the blessed lifelong herbal medicine otherwise. So, it appears that I shouldn’t need to harvest flush with taste, THC and smoothness being my main objectives. BTW: I’m in the 2nd week of bud-building-flowering of 2 sativa and 2 INDICA females. Had some issues with the sativas, yet studying the research, personal insights and trusting the plants themselves helped, but the best info I discovered was via KZbin growers like you who helped newbies for free with your knowledge! Hey brother thanks for the videos. I agree with the study on not flushing. I think the overall whole health of the plant during the entire growth cycle should remain strong. I do pruning that reduces the amount of foliage because your follage is just used as storage of nutrients for the plants to use. This way the plants are using the nutrients for building the flowers. Also, I feed every third watering throughout the entire life cycle in order to reduce toxicities and salt buildup. It seems to be a healthy method and my plants respond well.

Thank you for those findings. I suspected through my own experience this. And I agree 110% about harshness. I think it has more to do with curing time. When I started years ago I thought I ruined a couple of my harvest because it smoked so harsh 2 weeks after curing. I just bagged it and stowed it somewhere. 2 months later I was dry and desperate. Broke out my "Bad" stuff and was blown away by how smooth it was and a hell of a lot more potent. Very big lesson learned.

I've watched the study vid shortly after it's release. Honestly I was surprised that there was so little difference between 14 and 0 day. I have heard from numerous people doing research that if you don't flush the final product is more harsh. Good point on the chlorophyll breaking down. That may speed up the curing process a little bit. Need more data to input into brain. Keep up the great work man.

I normally flush for 7 days (coco), but my last harvest only flushed for two. There is a definite chemical tang to the harvest with the short flush.

mmm it would have been better if you got a friend to blind test it. The fact that you knew how long it was flushed could affect your mind in thinking it tastes different. the mind is a powerful thing. also 1 grow is different from another so it would be an assumption that it was down to the flush and not scientific evidence that it was the cause for the difference in flavour

I found this out by accident when i was feeding my plants and decided to harvest thinking they were finished (they were probably 1.5 weeks from being finished but at the time i didnt know) with a ppm runoff of over 500 right at harvest, i found it was some of the smoothest smoke and best tasting herb ive had, comparable to high grade. When I first started growing I thought flushing was to only give water for last couple weeks. When you see the color of the leaves fade means the buds are taking from the leaves. Take them down. Its always worked for me.

There is another interview with one of the people that conducted the test, she was asked just that, why use it if it doesn't change anything. She said something along the lines of "We proved both sides of the argument. You don't need it but it won't hurt it to keep using it. It's up to you"

Get yourself a tiny 100x microscope and check out the color of the trichromes! They have some now that attach to your phone, but I like some of the old school hand held ones. See if they are clear, then it's too early. Or milky looking. I like milky with about 10% red heads personally, but if you want the highest % harvest when all milky I believe.

I do it for the last 2 weeks or so because I didn't on my first grow (back in the 90s), and the flowers were almost un-smokable. They burned to a crispy black ash and wouldn't stay lit. 100% unburning in a joint or blunt, and had to keep fire on it in a bowl or bong. I was using miracle grow (and that was probably my real problem) but I've done it ever since and never looked back. Plus, since they don't need it, I save a few bucks on nutrients. I've always grown in soil...usually a self built soilless soil. I've taken the water only as long as 3 1/2 weeks and I've never seen any deficiencies during that time over hundreds of harvests.

If you use just Sulphur* and hygrozyme (*Shogun dragon force nutes) in week 8 doesn't this initialise the death knoll for the plant to squeeze out those last bits of growth and turpines, turning the leaves yellow before flushing in final week 9?

Would love to hear your thoughts on Bruce Bugbee and U of Utah's method for maximizing yield. We've been running his tech and have saved nearly 80% recurring overhead compared to our competitors. Furthermore, we continually get asked to consult and "fix" grows who utilize multi-bottle nutrient regimens. Seems like a massive marketing scam on the part of nearly all nutrient companies.

Great Video! I'm new to growing and as most newbies we tend to over worry about whether we're doing things right. A friend of mine who is much more seasoned as well as other posts on youtube say " don't over think it! IT's A WEED! Nature doesn't flush or does (depending on rainfall) It grows in the wild un-pampered and unattended so logically, at least for me I'm going to "leave it alone and it should do just fine!" I'll just water with no nutes the last 2 weeks. Curing may take longer, but I'll have plenty of weed after harvest that eventually I'll be able to find the optimum cure time since it'll take quite a while to consume! New grower here, I have been scouring KZbin these past 6-8 months trying to to soak up all the info about growing, harvesting, drying, and curing I can find lol. I’m trying to get the best info I can (imo) Of course and come across this Video and the 48 hour darkness interview video. So basically I have come to the conclusion that no matter what process you follow when it comes to harvesting/flushing etc is all bro science lol. Basically try it all and whatever works best for you then run with that lol, I’ve realized there is no exact science when it comes to cultivating these plants lol. Basically do your research try some methods out and pick which one works best for you lol. Cause almost every single grow channel on KZbin does something different throughout the life of the plant and they get great results lol. I appreciate the information. I finished my first grow including drying and curing in Feb. I didn’t really understand flushing and by the time someone told me I needed to flush, the trichomes we’re telling me it was time to harvest so I didn’t flush. This is obviously a one time thing and strictly anecdotal but my flower had nice terps. The aromas and flavors were great. It’s a smooth smoke and I have to be honest, I was scared I fucked up by not flushing. My anecdotal evidence sides with the study.

Thanks for covering this. Yours is one of the four channels I trust to give actual and accurate info. Most talk in circles, never actually giving any useful info. MIGRO is another one of the 4, and I heard about this there. I'm about to flower for the first time, and EVERY other channel, trusted or not, says flush, but they appear completely unaware of this study. I was really hoping to hear a second opinion that I respect. I'm with you. If it makes no difference in the cured flowers' smoke, save the nutes and get more grows out of the same bottles.

Everybody is all over flushing for the smoking experience and few if any pay attention to those who only want to make edibles... Flushing product that will ONLY be used in edibles.. is overlooked by folks.. they all seem to be "target locked" only thinking of smokeability... Can we get some clarity about producing edibles? I ignored the idea of flushing for this reason. It just doesn't make any sense at all for those who just want to create edibles! This study is GREAT... thanks for bringing it to us!

For my autos in 7 gallon grow bags, I use Neptune's Harvest Hydrolized Fish Emulsion from start to about 2 weeks before harvest.. Then use distilled water.

If you watch the full video, they actually say there were 62 or 64 participants that were involved with the test. So it wasn't just a couple of testers. Your comments are also appreciated as it does seem to make a difference in probable time spent drying and curing for the non flushed plants. Plus costs and time personally spent mixing nuts etc. What I found interesting is that the worst tasting etc samples were the plants only flushed 7 days. So it does make sense that at least 10 to 14 day flush is better than just a week. This is important because sometimes in an outdoor grow ot becomes necessary to cut down sooner rather than later because of ripening. You sometimes don't have 14 days to flush because that plants for reasons of outdoor temperatures and other factors play a role in how fast they ripen. Recently in our area we were having temperatures ranging from the high 80s in the day. ALL the way down to 50 at night. It really spead up the ripening time by a great magnitude. One day your looking at white pistols, the next 50 percent have darkened. Plus trichomes all of a sudden are all milky. So now it's time to make a decision to flush for a couple of days ofr just skip it. The leaves are also turning yellow on there own faster than otherwise would have happened during a flush. It's truly time to cut to save the quality of the medical quality of the plants. Not all but three quarters. Thanks for your time and help.

That's the precise reason I do flush and been doing it 30 years. I leech the media of nutrients by simply stopping nutrients once the trichomes are all cloudy and give the plants nothing but PH adjusted water for about 10 days. It forces the plant to use up what it has stored furthering the breakdown of chlorophyll. Thsts the fade is the chlorophyll breakdown. I'm glad someone else understood this.. But it amazes me people especially new and novice growers "under 5 years " still think we "flush " the plant by drowning it with insane amount of water. Its simply water to run off enough to slurry test last 10 days or so. There is no reason to give a plant 1500 ppm of feed in last 10 days then again 5 or even 3 days before chop. That's insane. Even nutrient companies that have been around for 40 years like Fox Farms and General Hydroponics recommend flushing and stopping days well before chop.

I've heard others define Flushing as running tons of water thru the medium to get the EC ppm way down, like 10 to 20 times pot size in water. and Leaching defined as watering with plain water, the regular amount of water used during normal waterings. I have a feeling the test they did was just normal watering without nutes.

You want as little nutes left in medium as possible. Also only soils and pro mices work for his, not hydro pellets etc. The idea is that unneccesary nutes/unused nutes migrate back into the medium as it becomes depleted with final drybacks, literally sucking out any raw nutes not used (pollutants). I work in a canna facility and when we do a moisture test were put a certain weight of bud into a machine that vaporizes it to determine how much moisture comes out. It's supposed to be like 12-14% moisture content.

I think most of the perceived harshness in dry vs wet bud is the burn rate and the heat of the smoke. I would think controlling for this would eliminate the effect but don't have a study on this to cite.

The only obvious oversite with this study is growing in coco. I may be wrong, but I thought coco was popular because it drains well, and doesn't accumulate nutrients the same as plastic or fabric pots of soil would. I read through the study, and they make no mention of this study's applicability to soil or hydroponic grows.

That being said I totally agree with you I have done multiple organic grows where I have not flushed at all and my plants always came out amazing potent very tasty and absolutely no harshness to them at all so with first hand experience I can say that flushing is not necessary at least for organic grows!!

There is nothing at all to flush in a purely organic grow. This usually only applies to salt based feeding

There is no difference in the final taste of the buds between organic and mineral fertilizers. Since organic matter breaks down into the same salts. This is the same. But organics need time to decay, and mineral fertilizers are ready-made and therefore the plant grows faster and more with them.

Thank you for presenting the study. I am with you. They showed why you want to flush. It may not be for yield or "smokers experience". As a vaper, I believe that I can tell the difference. But I definitely would love to get that natural fall look with the leaves yellowing at the end of flower. Small indoor grow in soil with organic nutes. I will keep doing the 14 day flush.

I flush in dwc because the stress of lack of nutes finishes up the plant nice, 3 days ro water and they plump up and consume their leafs fast. I remain unsure if it effects flavour though

Hi Chris I find that setting up a timeline like one or two weeks for Flushing is just a rough estimate. different cultivars and different size of plants uptake water differently. The types of fertilizer you use also makes a difference. I find that using a PPM pen and measuring your runoff making sure the PPM on your runoff is equal to the tap water or RSO water that you are using. This is a true indicator. love the channel bud

I do a flush, in Coco, however I don't push any more liquid through each plant than I normally would on a feed day. Normal amount of PH'd water, at tap water ppm, mine is 130ppm. I do that for 14-18 days, or until I see my ppm go below 250, or closer to my tap ppm of 130, then chop. I enjoy the show, keep up the good work man!
