LONG-TERM REVIEW: EGO LAWN TOOLS - Still worth it after 2-3 years??

I bought my Ego mower in April of 2017....7 years later, its still going strong. My modifications: upgraded to the 2 blade set up and did buy a new battery last year. Still amazed that I got 6 years out of the original batter (and if I had to guess, the original batter is at 50% battery capacity, so I use it in the leaf blower).

I've had my Ego mower for 3 years as well. The original 7.5 battery is still going well, and I got a 3rd party 5.0 battery to give me a little more time for when I mulch leaves in the fall. All has been well

I've had the blower and mower just like yours for 3 years now with no issues at all. So much better than gas for my 1/4 acre residential lot. No breathing fumes while mowing, no storing explosive gas in my garage, no worries the gas is getting old and gonna' clog the carb, no oil or air filter changes, no having to go get that gallon of gas at the station when you've run out, etc. I do store the batteries inside in the winter to avoid freezing temps. My neighbor didn't and he had trouble with one battery but had it fixed under warranty. Yes, total fanboy here, but I love my setup, works great.

I walked into Lowes to get a Dewalt string trimmer, as I have their batteries already. Didn't have any. Stumbled on the cheapest EGO trimmer. Walked out with it for 170 bucks. This thing is awesome. I think I'll be sticking with them for all the outdoor tools.

2:24 I have to disagree There is absolutely no reason at all to register any Ego tools because Ego never honors any warranties ever. There are no humans available to answer your phone calls.

My 5.0ah batteries are from 2017, they have been reliable so far. They are starting to have issues with high power tools like the 2 stage snowblower. Run time is reduced and it will yellow flash especially at lower charge level. Overall I can’t complain I think these tools are great. I am considering upgrading upgrading to the 12ah to keep my tools running long term.

keep in mind the weight. I have the 10ah battery from a Snowblower and they are heavy. be sure you have a strap kit to held all the weight. the new multi-head kit # PH1420 will come with a strap kit, the old one does not.

Where do you store your batteries? If they're kept inside or in a dehumified environment they'll last longer. Never store fully charged or almost depleted. Half way is the sweet spot. There are some battery packs that were being made by more than one manufacturer which were using poor quality metal strip for the battery contacts. Milwaukee wasv one brand doing this but they corrected it quickly. The next thing that commonly happens is sometimes the temp cutoff switch trips and then the battery has no output. That's an even older problem..

I’ve had zero issues with my Ego mower. I would never go back to gasoline. This morning my neighbor is borrowing my Ego mower. I think he’ll end up buying one. Maybe I’ll just buy one for him. Cheers!

I am amazed by how good the Ego tools are. Blower dislodges wet oak leaves curled up inside English ivy. From six feet away. 30 minutes on a 5Ah battery. Snow blower runs 45 minutes on wet snow and bogs down the same as the gasoline model my neighbor uses, but does not need to be restarted the way the gasoline one does. The string trimmer (multi-tool) needs to have a bigger guard on it. Spews grass and weeds everywhere. It's also heavy. But it's a beast. Very powerful.

I have had my Ego mower and trimmer for about 5 years now with zero problems. I have about a quarter acre and can mow and trimmer on one charge. I highly recommend the Ego system as being very reliable.

I bought the weed Wacker because I don't want to deal with yanking on a pool cord end up buying a second ego Wacker for the extra battery because we have a big yard. They both are good and they have a lot of power.

I have had an ego trimmer for about 3 years, my big change is the trimmer line, I find the EGO line is flimsy and breaks off to easily, I simply go to Lowes and buy the .095 Shakespreare 125 ft. The life on a spool of line has increased tremendously!

I just bought an Ego mower a couple weeks ago at Ace Hardware in town....so far so good....lots of getting used to. This mower is rear wheel drive so self propelled, I've never really had a self propelled mower as I don't mow too much with a push mower to really need the self propel feature....now, without my lawn tractor this year, I'm mowing the yard with the Ego...I still have my gas powered push mower as well, but I haven't used it since I got the Ego LOL....I like the Ego's self propel as its variable speed, and the mower is quieter than the gas ones by far. I have the 7.5ah battery and I can usually mow for about 40-45 minutes with it before it dies.....not too bad honestly, as I was mulching, plus the grass was pretty tall and thick. I might get the trimmer and blower at some point as well. Hopefully at some point Ego has sales on batteries and I'll buy a 2nd battery. I haven't tried bagging with the Ego mower, I never bag anyhow, I mulch and side discharge....really wish they had a standard side discharge chute on the side of the deck instead of the one that comes off the back of the mower, but it is what it is. I immediately found the OEM blade that came on the mower isn't great at doing anything, and its very thin. I replaced it with a universal 3-in-1 blade, and have noticed an immediate increase in mulching and side discharging capabilities....it really blows the clippings out where with the OEM blade it would constantly clog the chute....in mulching mode the clippings are totally gone now, with the OEM blade it was mediocre at best. Granted the universal blade is thicker and heavier, I'll sacrifice a little battery time to get better cutting result. I also don't see the $20-30+ in those Ego blades....won't buy and OEM blade, sorry Ego they're not worth the $25-30 I've seen them for lately. The Universal blade was $18 and works better. I hope this mower lasts for years and years because they're quite expensive, so are the batteries.

I started to replace my outdoor equipment with EGO products but then my leaf blowers started to die after 1 year with light to moderate use. I am now on leaf blower number 3 . They replace them , but the tools are expensive. We will have to see how number 3 lives or dies before I replace my gas lawn mower or weed trimmer. Good vide and nice to hear that most people are having good luck with this brand.

2-3 years?? I've had mine for 10 years now! Original mower with original batteries. No degradation at all with mine. They last as long as they did on day one. I haven't even sharpened or replaced my blade. It still cuts and works as awesome as the first year. I also got the string trimmer and leaf blower then too. All three tools and batteries are still great!! I upgraded my string trimmer a couple of years ago to the carbon fibre shaft and automatic string loader, but my original one is still fine. I also got the hedge trimmer, chain saw, and snow blower a couple of years ago too. Ego is by far the best and worth every penny! They main way to have longevity in the batteries is to not keep them in the garage. I store and charge them in my house. The extreme temps of summer and winter are not good for them

I love my ego tools. I have had no issues. For the person the said the weed whacker is not as powerful as gas has never used the iq model trimmer. Ego is the best on the market. I have heard how bad all the other brand are. I love the mower because it works great, lite weight, quiet. We used the blower more than any other tool.

I wouldn't touch those generic packs just for the warranty alone. An extra $100 to be covered for 5 years is worth it. Plus, I would want to know the charging cycle rating for those generics. Battery cell longevity is just as important as run time.

I had an issue with the flashing amber light on my 2nd gen 7.5aH battery for my mower. Turns out, it happens because of the bumping with backyard, something inside comes loose. Also found out, if you give it a gentle bump in the opposite orientation (light/button down) it fixes itself. Give it a shot, and you may find you have yourself a spare 7.5aH battery.

I sometimes got an overheat warning on LM2135SP last summer, but it seemed to be the mower itself. I had it serviced under warranty and haven't gotten a warning light yet in either of my two mows so far this year. Fingers crossed. I'll have to try that battery trick. I have a dead 7.5ah that I had replaced under warranty and they said to not bother sending back the dead one. Its problem was that it wouldn't even take a charge, much less hold one.

As mentioned in the video, it is strongly encouraged that you immediately register your purchase. I didn't and paid the price when addressing my 5ah batterty as it went totally dead after 3 months of use. Issue resolved but went over the and through the woods to get it resolved. Good vid.

I don’t yet have any experience with Ego products, but I can’t help but feel like some of the complaints here probably involve more than what they’re giving off, judging by the tone of the comment. Seems like a smart move going with the LM2156SP for the 5-year warranty on the battery versus the 3-year on the LM2135SP.

Thanks for the review. I have a mix brand of tools (ego blower and trimmer, craftsman v60 mower). The V60 has been discontinued after only a few years, and the maker of the v60 battery for craftsman and cub cadet stopped making it. So when the battery dies here in another year, I'll need a new mower, so I suppose I may get an ego since I already have 2 good batteries for the trimmer and blower.

Most of my batteries last just a bit longer than 3 years before they degrade significantly. Ive also had 2 self propelled mowers that the self-propelled stopped working.

I have replaced 2 of my 3 EGO batteries under warranty. The first one took 5 months and lots of calling to get it shipped out. The second one shipped within a week. (2 months left on original battery warranties)

yeah they (and everyone else) had major supply chain issues for awhile there. I still do like this system...but I must admit that the battery aspect is a bit of a dice-roll. I don't think you buy this system on the economics...but because they're just much more enjoyable and convenient to use.

I'm 2 years into EGO. Customer service was good, but they are strict. I lost my receipt, so they wouldn't honor my 3/5 year warranty above one free fix to my snow blower when I hit a huge, hidden rock that broke the transmission. The nearest service center is 100 miles away, one way, so, I may not have used the warranty for repair work in the future anyway. The 2400 blower is as good as/better than my 2 stage Ariens gasoline one was. 5ah batteries are good enough to clear a 250', gravel driveway on a hill in a 16" Maine blizzard. down/up/down/up, enough to get my car out.

I always like to remove the guard on my weed trimmers like the landscapers do so I can pounce more string out for a wider cutting swath. Curious if that would bog down an electric trimmer too much.

I'm five years on with my push mower with original battery. My weed eater works but is letting out too much string and it raps around the outside. I walk around with a pair of small pruners and just keep it back that way. Can't have everything I guess. Might be time for the auto feed trimmer??? Push mower, trimmer, chainsaw, snowblower and Z6. Looks like I'm stuck with Ego.

There are battery companies that offer rebuild services (replace the cells and circuit board) for EGO batteries that have gone dead. I have a dead 7.5ah that I got a replacement for under warranty, so I've been tempted to try it. One place charges $270 for that size, versus $399 for new.

Had my mower for about 6 years now. Not a single issue. Batteries started dying last year as they are used a good 10-11 months out of the year down here in South Texas. Trimmer has a bit of a nild noise to the head for the past year and a half but works flawlessly. Unfortunately the part that will absolutely go out are the batteries which all do. Doesn't make it suck any less when you have to drop that money especially when they are all about the same age and start dying one after another. LOL. Only thing I wish is they would suck better like a gas. I know they need to reduce drag for the battery life and noise but that's my only complaint really.

I figure if I get one, I'll be buying new batteries in year 6, so I would expect to have to drop 3K again in 5 years, which to be honest is a lot, but if they power a lot of things on the property (such as maybe a future EGO UTV??). Not very environmentally friendly to have 6 Li-Ion batteries to recycle! LOL, but I already have a diesel John Deere tractor and I don't want to get all my maintenance also worked out for a gas engine.

I have had Ego mowers, blowers, edgers for about 6 years. I also own a super reliable Honda self propelled mower. I mow every year about 50% w the Honda and 50% with Ego. I have found that most of my Ego (expensive) batteries become very weak after 3.5 years ..just after the warranty typically expires. My current Ego mower has 10amp battery and has a 5 yr warranty however. I do like Ego and have had no other issues of any kind with them. The way I look at it is that your not really buying a 'mower'...your really buying a battery system because the battery is what costs a lot and its price never goes down, only up. The battery can cost as much a new ICE mower! If the Ego mower fails in the future(the battery), outside of the warranty, I will simply go back full time..using only my bulletproof Honda mower.

Yeah...if the decision was purely based on economics, battery tools are not going to win over gas-powered. I still prefer them for ¹/² acre or less because they're quieter, require less maintenance and just generally less hassle...though I'll readily admit they are more expensive.

In Australia, I loved the EGO equipment (I had a mower, 18 inch chainsaw and weed trimmer) but the batteries were poor. Too many red flashing lights, even on the replacement battery under warranty. Even my local hardware store said they had numerous returns on the EGO batteries. The vents on the 2nd gen batteries are poorly designed and vulnerable to moisture. And EGO in Australia are not easy to deal with. My lovely hardware store actually gave me two free batteries from their own stock as EGO were just delaying responses. Then I sold or gave away my gear and went to Ozito tools and batteries. I have seven Ozito batteries and six tools (mowers, chainsaws, telescopic trimmers etc) and not one issue in years. 😊

We don't have Ozito in the US (that I'm aware of anyway). But sounds like a great alternative. I've still just had the one battery issue (out of about 5 batteries now, I think), so on balance, it's still been a positive experience for me. But I do agree it can be a bit of a gamble. You get lucky...or you don't. :-/

@@ReeWrayOutdoors Yes and in fairness to EGO, I think some of the pallets got wet on delivery to hardware stores to Australia some years ago during our incredible wet period and that may have damaged many hundreds (thousands?) of batteries during the delivery process. Hard to say although EGO wasn't forthcoming and recognising this. I love my Ozito gear. The products are made in China and designed in Germany. Amazing equipment and cheaper than EGO for sure - although Ozito is getting a bit more expensive now that it's brand is seen as so reliable.

Personally, I'd go battery-electric. I've used a corded electric blower...and now that I have battery-electric, will never go back to corded. I think if your decision is based strictly on cost...gas is still the clear winner. But for me, the convenience of not dealing with gas...or sparkplugs....or oil...or the noise...or finicky pull-starts....is worth paying a bit more for battery elec tric. Just make sure you register those equipment and battery purchases so you get the full warranty. And I just moved a few months ago to a much larger property and the battery mower is no longer a great option for me for 90% of the lawn just due to the large area I need to mow. I"ll still use it for the tight spaces I can't get my big ZT mower into, but man I miss the quiet of my EGO mower now.

@@BrayZap Sure man. No problem! And for comparison, the property I had when I did the EGO videos was also a 1/4 acre lot. I had no issues mowing the property on a single charge of the 7.5Ah battery and the smaller 2.5Ah and 5Ah batteries are more than enough for the string trimming and leaf blowing, in my experience.

Not as often as I should. haha Typically just once a year..and I alternate between the 2 blades so I can take my time and sharpen when it's convenient.

The trimmer is not heavy at all when used with a 2.5Ah battery. It does get a bit weighty when you use it with a 5.0 or 7.5Ah battery though (which I sometime do, in a pinch).

What trimmer line do you recommend?

Did you use any special wrench to remove the blade from the mower? My blade is so tight I can't get it to budge with a socket wrench.

No - I seem recall that it is reverse-threaded (maybe?)...I used a block of wood brace the blade and then used a wrench and rubber mallet to get it free.

Thanks! I mounted these to a 2' x 2' piece of plywood: amzn.to/3V0ArzE And then hung the plywood on a couple of hooks so I can easily take them inside for the winter. :)

I second a previous comment about battery storage. Don't leave any batteries outside. Always bring them in to your climate controlled house.

Is your mower self propelled? If yes how much battery drain does it cause? I’m assuming the 56 minutes on the battery is significantly reduced?

I think to at least some extent, the amount of impact on run-time when using the self-propelled assist will depend on how much slope you have to mow over. That said, I'd estimate that if I were to use it 100% of the time on my yard, it would probably reduce run-time by about 25%. However, because I don't have much slope on my yard AND this mower is incredibly light compared to a gas mower, I only find myself using it about 15% of the time I'm mowing and so, for me anyway, the impact on run-time is relatively minor.

So here’s my deal. A blower and 2.5amp at 18months and perhaps i put it on the charger without letting it cool the half hour a couple times and walla it’s dead. I was nice to the service call and we decided it was dead and they are sending me a new one. But, I went and bought a 5amp put on the charger over night saw it had one bar, and the fan running and next day it was dead. When I made the call they registered the two batteries and charger for me. Sent me back to the store and was to exchange the just purchased 5amp for another. This morning after room temp put this new one on the charger and watched each of the 5 light flash till charged and removed it from the charger. So they can register you even after your purchase, and I had the receipts to photo text to them. So I’m happy too. Both the new ones were 6 months old. I think I do not want the self propelled mower that are more money. But I will not leave the battery on the charger longer than needed anymore.

If you want your lithium ion batteries to last, keep them out of a hot garage. Heat kills lithium ion batteries

I bought the string trimmer and the hedge clipper, both with batteries and chargers about three years ago. One of my batteries will not hold a charge but EGO will not honor the warranty because I didn’t register it immediately even though I provided a receipt. I was very disappointed and will not buy EGO again.

I look after a 4 hectare park, around 12 Acer's the boss gave me a full set of Ego gear. I have killed 2 strimmer units using the brush cutter blades, it is not up to the job. The batteries have noticeably less power now than 18 months ago having flat batteries is just a ball ache compared to gas...I begged the boss to buy some Stihl units, this is Hoby home owner grade kit.I would say if you have more than 1acer don't go electric.

That's why your batteries are dieing in part.. don't keep them on your floor. U see how expensive they are. And read the labels.. they say and it's common knowledge too that they need to be stored in a dry place. Ideally room temperature. The batteries will respirate ever sightly so cold weather could create corrosion since the batteries will sometimes get put away after using when they're warm.

I'm at the end of the 4th season with the trimmer and blower.. batteries are getting wonky... 3rd season with the chainsaw, its battery is funky too.. Im definitely not liking the idea of spending on 3 new batteries...

Yeah, it does feel a little like a roll of the dice, I must admit. Based on some of the comments this video has gotten, it does seem like it's not an uncommon issue and something to definitely take into consideration. Perhaps I've been lucky? I dont' know. I would be curious to know if you do anything in particular to care for the batteries, and whether or not you have a cold-season where you're not using them, etc. Just trying to get a sense of what might be driving these issues.

@@ReeWrayOutdoors Keys to EGO battery long-life: Store batteries around room temperature (not too cold), and charge batteries with the "slow" charger more often than not, limiting the use of the "fast" charger. While the fast charger is convenient, fast charging will incrementally reduce the life of the battery over-time.

Since you are experienced with EGO Battery packs, I would like your advice on a problem I have that is not addressed in the EGO Battery manual. I have a new EGO 56V 2.5AH Battery Pack, bought two months ago with an EGO lawn trimmer. After the trimming was done on the lawn (September 20, 2022), I fully charged it and set it aside. So far, so good. The EGO Battery manual says that it is supposed to go to 30% after a month in storage, but as of November 5 , 2022 (well over a month), it still shows all 5 lines of FULL charge. It appears the BMS is not working to lower the battery pack to 30%. Is this battery defective? I read that at 80% or more charge, Lithium batteries lose 20% per year of capacity. I don't want to lose 20% a year. Just running the Battery Pack on the trimmer to force it down to 30% is NOT what the manual says I am supposed to do. What should I do?

For $25 for a new lawnmower blade I would simply sharrpen the blade. Balance it via a nail in the wall or some vertical surface. Thatt is an expensiive system of 3 itools, batteries,....for the actual tasks they perform. Lots of non-recyceable batteries.

EGO is a Chinese owned and operated company. Get rid of that garbage and get Milwaukee. The lawn mowers are garbage and have an 8" clearance on the front, so super hard to really get close to things and turn.

Love the tools, HATE the batteries. Mine have all failed after only around 40 hours. Too expensive to replace that often. You’re right, I didn’t register. Then all my batteries turned to trash. I now TOTALLY REGRET my purchase in the first place. I should have stayed with STILH!

This older gentleman advise me never to recharge my battery when its hot or after mowing your lawn. When for it to cool off then charge it. Also never leave the batteries in the garage. The hot temps of the garage will ruin it in the long run...#1 warning on any battery is not to expose it to hot temps...even those small duracell batteries have that warning. As a result, my ego battery works perfectly after 4 years.

I think it's funny to hear you say you're happy because after 3 yrs the mower works good. I have a Honda gas Mower that still runs perfect & it's over 25 yrs old. Never had any problems with it. Even has the original tires. I'm pretty sure your Ego mower won't last anywhere near that long.

You could be right about that, and time will tell. And if the decision to go with this system was based purely on economics, it would most certainly not be the best option. But have other priorities ahead of the economics of the purchase...so it works for me. But other people have other priorities so...it's not for everyone.

Stop spreading lies. I have bought several Ego tools and three with batteries. I have a push mower from 2016. That 5ah battery still works but isn't as strong as it originally was. After about 5 years of age, it was clearly worse. I bought a 16" chain saw 3 years ago (2021) with a 5ah battery. I also got the pole saw without a battery. It is now the workhorse battery for the lawnmower and chainsaw and the original is my spare to finish the lawn, if the current one doesn't make it. I also have a 2.5ah battery that came with my string trimmer, which I got 4 or 5 years ago. The first one I got came with a dead battery. I had to bring it back to Home Depot and exchange it for a brand new one, which was slightly annoying because I had already assembled it and it worked great with my 5ah battery. The replacement string trimmer had a working 2.5ah battery and I've used it with my edger and hedge trimmer and it charges on the standard charger in my garage. I also use it for my 10" pole saw, which is kept in my back yard shed, along with the mower and chainsaw. I've found the 2.5ah can be used with the mower and chainsaw but it didn't work for very long, though. I try to keep both 5ah batteries charged. Maintenance on my mower has been close to non existent. I replaced the blade for the first time a couple weeks ago for less than $25. That new high lift blade works great for bagging. So well it's hard to tell the bag is full. I've spent no money on gas, oil or filters in 8 years. Grass rarely clogs in the deck and when it needs cleaned, I can put the mower on it's side without gas or oil spillage.
