Hi and welcome to this video in which I take look at the Garmin G1000, particularly the default X-Plane 11 version.
I start with an overview of the system as a whole before moving onto some flying demonstrations.
It's a very capable piece of equipment, as it is in the real world, but this is hopefully useful for the sim community out there.

I had just finished watching "Part 1" which ended around 45:00, and I thought, "Wouldn't having an index of topics and times be extremely helpful?" And then I scrolled down to the comments and saw your post. That took a lot of work on both your part as well as flightsim481. Thanks to both of you. Very much appreciated.

I realize that you had published this video over 6 years ago, but it still very pertinent today. I am very in tune with your method of teaching which makes learning easy and enjoyable. I am a novice pilot learning to fly. Thank you for your thorough explanations of the G1000 which I intend to use to its fullest in X-Plane 12 flying the same Cessna N172SP plane as in your examples. Great video. Just one point I noticed; at 1:28:50 when talking about adding a waypoint, you say you want to add one after POTON and place your cursor on that, which obviously added it before. You did clarify it a little later, so hopefully no one will end up confused.

A++ content. Great job. 👍 As I work toward IFR i really appreciate the full presentation of the key knowledge involved - both for the sim and fuller use of G1000 capabilities using IFR route/plates. Walk through of manual flight plan set up from the cockpit was of particular interest. Thank you. Well done.

Just thought I'd mention that PFD is Primary Flight Display (not Pilot's display) and DTK is Desired Track (not Direct Track). And ETE is Estimated Time Enroute not Estimated Time of Arrival, which is a different thing.

Hi Richard, I’ve had X Plane since 2017 and the G1000 since it was added, but I didn’t use it because I found it confusing, however thanks to your video I am now giving it a try, I still find that it is not as intuitive as say the Flight Factor A320 FMC but I like a challenge. Thank you once again for a very informative tutorial.

Thank you for this! You have covered so many interesting functions and included valuable real world experienced pilot practical perspective. This is my initial look at the G1000 as all my previous simming was with the G530. I just purchased the Carenado TBM which has the G1000. It will be a while before I do any planned flights with it, but your video has been very helpful as an introduction and will be a great reference to return to.

Looking for challenging airport? Here it is: LSZA, in southern Switzerland. It has a steep, 6.65° straight-in ILS approach and two 5.4° and 4.4° ILS approaches with break-offs followed by circling visual approaches in a narrow valley. The runway has a length of about 900 m suitable for regional turboprop airliners, executive jets and general aviation airplanes. The magnificent region is surrounded by 3 lakes. Aerosoft has a specific scenery for LSZA which comes for free with their X-Plane DVD distribution or which they sell separately on their site but which the X-Plane store also sells. I look forward for a video on a LSZA approach from a pro like you, perhaps with the same C172/G1000 settings ;-)

One of the best explanation of G1000, 👍👍 just one question about approach what if we are entering with heading between 110 to 142 ?? Holding pattern is not suitable for parallel or tear drop entry as it is clockwise
@vikramodedra4351
@vikramodedra4351 3 жыл бұрын
theoretically to enter this holding while flying between heading 33 to 142 we need to do parallel entry that makes this approach difficult, for heading 142 to 322 one would take direct entry onto holding (or procedure turn ) or should we fly ILS straight for this entry? only easy one is 322 to 33

It is a shame because I learned to fly with an NDB on the old steamer gauges. However, in the United States the NDB was decommissioned years ago due to operating costs to the government. VOR’s are headed that way as well. Most airports that have a published approach will have a GPS approach so the NDB is not needed. Eventually the investment will be made at more airports will be able to use vertical navigation systems as well as an ILS replacement. It would be up to the aircraft to be able to be installed with the system that uses vertical navigation.
@flightsim481
@flightsim481 3 жыл бұрын
There are still some airfields in the UK which have NDB approaches as GPS approaches still need surveying and certifying by the CAA. I think the FAA are much more progressive than the UK with GPS approaches with vertical guidance. The FAA certainly started using GPS approaches in general before the UK. We even have the anomaly of the Woodley and Wescott NDBs which are part of many of London Heathrow's SIDS and STARS!

One of the best tutorials! I'm trying to find an answer to the issue I have flying GPS to the FAF and the AP does not fix to the locator, it goes to ROL instead of LOC. Used to work fine for the exact same flight plan, driving me insane! Please help!! PS- NAV all set, altitude correct. Just switches over to ROL and goes off course and misses ILS! :(

Hi, Thanks for a great instructional video. I realise it’s been around for quite a while, but I only found it recently. One thing I didn’t quite fully understand was that during the setup for the ILS21 approach, around 2:04:30 ish in the video there were 4 different iaf’s listed for CIT. You chose CIT2 but didn’t fully explain the reasoning why CIT2. Although I’ve looked at the NATS AIP charts and info for Cranfield EGTC I haven’t found anything to explain the criteria for selecting the correct join. Maybe I missed something. Can you or anyone else who knows provide a quick explanation. Thanks and thanks again for the great video work. Regards

Hi, glad you enjoyed it. As you say, the video is quite old so I can't recall exactly how I figured out it was the CIT2. I think it was by trial and error, loading each SID in turn and comparing the plan view drawn by the G1000 to the Navigraph charts. It's a pain as it does it with quite a few approaches in the UK, but familiarity helped as I flew part of my instrument rating out of Coventry. Hope that helps, Rich

Great video. Btw there is no option to change the clock to UTC instead of local time?

Many thanks. It's a while since I have used it so I'm not sure about the clock time. Rich

Awesome Tutorial...Thank You! Is there a way on the X-Plane 1000 to program a HOLD at a specified fix? I was on Vatsim and they asked me to hold at a fix but I could not figure out how to program it (unlike the default Xplane fmc). I see there is a pre-programmed hold for a missed approach but can one be programmed?

Great video and good hand flying. Nice effect with the dog barking haha. One question: I always assumed you used meters in the UK but the sim was reporting feet. Do they use feet when flying in the UK?

Brent Johnson Thanks for the kind words. We use feet in the UK, as indeed does most of Europe. It's a bit odd using feet and thus Imperial measurements for attitude but using metric Hector Pascal's for setting pressures. I think the few countries using metres are Russia and some former Eastern Block countries.

Brent Johnson pretty much the whole world of aviation (except Russia, China, etc) use feet and nautical miles.
