Today I finally discuss the game that has taken the world (or I guess Twitter and KZbin) by storm. This is indie horror's new punching bag. Let's talk about Garten of Banban.

Okay i'm going to be completely unironic the bird's AI is good imo. Every game has the monster just make a beeline towards you if it see's you. The bird instead acts like an animal. It walks towards you, and stops before staring you down. He steps around cautiously, sizing you up, as if debating whether he can actually take you. And then when he realizes you wont be able to do shit to him he rushes you. That very accurate animal-like behavior actually sort of freaks me out a bit, it's the one thing I can give this game. I wish more indie horrors had unique-ish AI like that.

If you want interesting AI in a horror game like that, go play a game called The Forest. The sequel, Sons of The Forest is coming out in February too! The enemies are these cannibals who you are trapped on this island with. They have their own culture, command structure, religion, and beliefs. And they don't always attack you. Sometimes they fake you out, retreat, or just watch you. Its quite scary and your actions effect how they work. Sometimes they even start praying or mourning their fallen comrades, and if a cannibal is knocked down by you, they may try and drag them away to safety Squad-style while you're distracted.

shit, it took nearly 10 years to get ai that is somewhat like the alien's ai from alien isolation and even then it's a cheap copy (no I wont count emmis in dread, they are in 2d, not 3d).

But in this case, yeah it was broken, and probably made by accident But if it was on purpose, it's kind of cool and freaky how she paces in front of you. Once you flee is when she beelines it for you. Which if it was done well actually would've been scary

It takes every trope, the abandoned kids related facility, the simplistic kid friendly monsters, the monotonous puzzles and the unique but boring mechanics and bundles all of it into a 15 nugget of gold. Like legit we went from a tall guy with no face and tentacles in the woods to a robot bear in a pizza place to a mansion with 1000 rooms filled with monsters to a mysterious guy who's basement needs to be broken into to a 1930s cartoon brought to life with the powers of Satan to a Furby who's got an angry mother who is also a demon to a toy factory that was bringing toys to life using humans to a laboratory filled with super basic friends matching rainbow colors to a kindergarten that's wider than a military base with shit character designs that is somehow getting a sequel.

If I had a nickle for every chapter based game that takes place in an abbandoned facility that has you do puzzles and then at the end of a chapter has one of the main characters come to life and chase you or another character taking your only way to escape and bringing you deeper in to the facility (BanBan's isn't really an escape but oh well) while also having the main enemy be skinny and with a U shaped head (huggy's is less but who cares). I'd have 3 nickels; which while I could have done fine without a 2nd one, a 3rd Nickle Is one Nickle too many

Garten of Banban is literally just a Poppy Playtime ripoff, which is somewhat a Bendy and the Ink Machine ripoff, which is based on the idea of distorted mascot characters which can be traced back to FNAF and Creepypasta's. I think something that needed to be talked about is the developer, Euphoric Universe. Garten of Banban isn't the first game that this developer had made, and just by looking at the list of games they made, there's this... bizarre sense of tone to them? At least, just based off the game summaries. Like one game they made is about toppings trying to survive being eaten on a pizza, while another is about an ex-zombie who has to deal with a world where a cure has been found for zombification. It's freaking wild. From some of the reviews, there appears to be more to dislike than there is to like, but I honestly wouldn't mind a video looking into these games, especially since most of them do appear to lean into the horror angle.

I think what upsets me the most about this game is that the ingredients for a scary horror game are all there. As @skeletonhearts1837 mentioned, the bird has really good ai that could've been utilized better. The story, while a tad stale, could've been so cool. The designs for the monsters, while sadly bad, are ones I could imagine in a kindergarten. It could've been great, if there was actual love in this project. Who knows, maybe It could've triumphed over fnaf, if given the passion it deserved. But no. It was haphazardly made.

I personally believe this game was made *with the purpose of making fun of MOB games and their use of kid-friendly horror for profit* It's so lazy and bad cause thats what the indie horror has become lately. Besides the fact THE moment it released it already had a merch button and an advertisement of the second part is a clear nod to Poppy Playtime and their scummy business practices. There is a part of me that does actually find the bird creepy and it’s purely because of unintentional things. Like the texture, the bad walk, and the actually kinda creepy eyes do partially work… partially. I find bad and barren graphics to have a weird dreamlike creep to it. Like the demo for batim is way creepier than the final game. The game sucks ass and all of that creepiness was unintentional (except the eyes I guess) but I do kinda wish more unexperienced devs would take advantage of poorly made graphics. Even as someone who likes indie horror, even I was turned off by this game. I think the appeal of Mascot horror is the Juxtaposition part, the concept of kid friendly things being horrifying is nothing new, but I don’t think games like this really “get” that, and it’s kinda sad. Funny enough, the play area actually resembles a play area at a daycare/preschool place that happens to also be a baptist church, like with the big area that looks like it would be a big garage or basement but there's plenty of empty space and a bunch of play stuff and whatnot, legit there was a big plastic tree thing that you could walk into in the middle of it, it activated my inner child as I wanted to explore the place lmao, so I was partly jealous that little brother got to go that place, I never went to public daycare nor did I go to preschool. So yeah, the play room that game has gives me the vibes of a daycare, as sometimes daycare places do have big rooms for that. So that was probably the most realistic or probable part of the entire game that made any semblance of sense that it was supposed to be a daycare, kindergarten or both.

The reason why the game can be so inconsistent at times with its environments is because most of the assets used here aren't even original. They literally got them from a fucking asset store. Which is pretty lazy if you ask me.

The whole sequence towards the end of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2 with Big Dick Josh was incredibly stupid to me. Like, you’re telling me that this little rinky dink piece of garbage lift which falls away from long schlong Josh ended up falling on top of him and was able to pin him to the ground? How?! Chunky Chode Josh looks like he can lift and throw a car, how did this not just end up bouncing off of him, and even if it did fall on him, how was he not strong enough to simply brush it off? Jumbo Cock Josh is just another dumb part of the game.
