There are a few parts that need further clarifications such as the misogyny, but overall you did a great job in trying the educate these people with the facts that: 1) There are bad people in every belief. 2) Not everyone who claims to be a Muslim truly understand the teaching of the Quran 3) If you want the learn about the true teaching of Islam, read the Quran. 4) Do not think that the acts of a person who claims to be a Muslim is the true teaching of Islam (refer point 1) 5) Trying to learn about Islam by just observing how a person who claims to be a Muslim behaves is a bad idea (again, refer point 1) 5) The laws of Saudi Arabia are the laws of Saudi Arabia, and not necessarily the laws of Islam. Correction of order of the Qur'an. The companions did know the order of how it was supposed to be compiled because the prophet had already taught them which chapter/verse comes after which. It wasn't compiled haphazardly.

It is relieving that a great writer is unveiling the truth about the Holly Quran. However, Mr. Gary Wills must search further to find out the real wisdom beyond some of those "flaws" that he said exists in the Quran. For example, the reason that God said two women are equivalent to one man as witness in court of law is because women, as mothers, are compassionate in nature and may refrain from testifying against someone, therefore, two women should testify for the purpose of justice.

When you do seek the knowledge, you find there isn't agreement in Islam either as to the meaning of Islam. You have Shia and Sunnis, Ahmadiyas, etc. Among the Sunnis you have different schools of thought(madhab) which are different interpretations or understanding of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. This leads me to believe that Allah is the author of confusion.(I actually don't think he exists except in the minds of people).

If you want to read the Qur'an without flaws then it's better to learn Arabic and read the Qur'an in its original language and not with someone's interpretation and with their limited understanding because even in arabic one will need to study the Qur'an carefully and consider the context because you can read the Qur'an without its context and God knows best

Before anything, I should admire Mr Wills for his approach to actually go and study the Quran rather than being content with the hearsay. Regarding slavery, I must add, however, that unlike our contemporary tendency to look for facile and ready-made solutions to complicated problems, Quran abolishes slavery in practice through gradual acculturation of its audience. This was done partly, as Mr. Wills rightly mentioned, via extolling the release of former slaves and urging those who are not still ready to free their slaves to act kindly toward them and avoid any sort of violence in relation to them. This Quranic preference of gradual change is also the case concerning the status of women. Back then at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, women were socially extremely downgraded to the extent that many abhorred to have a girl and would rather bury her alive. General instructions of the Quran must be contextualized, otherwise we will encounter a "disjointed text", to quote Mr. Wills. The conditions upon which marrying more than one women depend are such that polygamy is effectively, and not by force, minimized. Take the proviso that the man in question must establish economic and emotional equality between the wives. The question is who can do it? Hardly anyone. Secondly, back then, due to events such as tribal fights, there was a general female majority in the society, some of whom were widows who had lost their husband and had no breadwinner - it wasn't like today when a woman may go and find a job.... Consequently, a better option would be to marry her and thus support her. In fact, there are some Islamic scholars like Ahmad Moftizadeh who do not regard it legitimate to have more than one wife simultaneously. He restricts this to a time when the situation resembles that of the prophet's era, in addition to the issue of equality which I stated above. There are other points about this lecture but I'm afraid it may become too long

I have a great respect for Gary Wills. His view is mainly accurate according to the little knowledge that i posses.The point that after life is spiritual and there is no physical pleasure, is incorrect. According to Islam, Allah created all the souls before Adam was created, then,each soul is joined with the body, in the mothers' womb in the 120th day of the fetus, then soul parts away when person dies. In other words , person dies when soul leaves from the body. The soul rejoins the body in the grave or where ever the person dies. This state is called the living of the barrier( the living of barzakh) . The last stage is the resurrection stage in which the body is transformed and reunited with the soul for accountability and judgement. People, will then be led into two camps: Heaven or Hell. The group that goes to Heaven will be rejoined with their righteous family members, children, spouses etc .Spouses will sexual intimacy, the same way we do today except it will be much more pleasurable, more intense and more powerful then what we have in this world today. The people of the Hell fire will have no pleasure at all. They will have torment after torment and they will never die after their first death, even though, they request for it , to end their suffering.

Once a Person reads Qur'an A - Z , and understands it with an open mind. It is not possible for that person not to accept the Universal message of Islam for man and Mankind. Unity of God and Unity of Humanity, brotherly love , charity , justice and truthful living , makes life easier and more beautiful.

I think that the reason woman inheritance is less may be due to the fact that the woman will eventually be married therefore receiving more from her husband and his dowry. This is just something I pondered upon this is not a fact.

Rise4justice The woman receives less because she is not required to work to provide for herself/family. Provision for the family is the man’s responsibility. In a truly practicing Muslim family, the mother/sister/wife/daughter is not required to work/provide for herself or family unless she wants to. Also, a muslim woman does inherit from her family and after her husband. Realistically, we do receive more than the man.
