A CHEAP vs EXPENSIVE PIZZA in LONDON!

My first pizza video on the channel. Now, I'll be honest... I do like pizza but it's not one of my favourite things to eat but as I haven't done a review like this on the channel so far, I thought it would be a good time to get one done and do a price comparison between two. How does an £8.50 pizza compare with a £26 pizza in Central London?

Olives are an aquired taste. I find. I really disliked them as a kid but can eat an entire dish of them now. Ditto blue cheese. I really disliked stilton until I tried it again when i was about 18. Tastebuds do mature.

Second pizza for me Gary, they actually put cheese on it compared to the expensive one! Don't like olives though but that's just me. I can never understand why pizzas are so expensive as they are made with minimal amounts of ingredients and cooked in minutes. The second one is better by far by on looks alone. Notice your subs are 10.5k already 👏😉

Hi Gary, great review again 👍🏽 I was making sourdough pizza 15 years ago before it was a thing. I thoroughly researched the art of Neapolitan pizza making. I can tell you that both pizzas looked pretty good to me although the first one looked as close to authentic as you can get. Sadly like a lot of Italian food it gets bastardised here in the Uk. The crust and base of both looked spot on with just the right amount of charring and thin crispy base. The first one margarita looked great cheese had melted into the sauce. 👍🏽 People are used to cheddar and Red Leicester which have no place on an authentic pizza. Also the amount of sauce looked just right if as you said it was properly made and full of flavour. Price of the first one seemed a bit steep but as you said pizza is a lot of dough 😂👍🏽

I agree. The first pizza is for me, and at 20 inches, is enough for two. So just £13 each portion. The second pizza looked gloopy and heavy. The whole point of a pizza is, that it's light, and very quick to cook.

Sorry to message again, but this is about olives!!!!!! My wife refused to eat them for the first 8 years we were together. That is until I insisted she tried the marinated olives in a Lebanese restaurant, well since then, I am lucky to get a look in!!!!!

The prices in the first place were ridiculous. Born in NY and have enjoyed pizza all over the US, France, Italy and the UK, and now that pizza ovens are so common in many friends home’s too. It’s flour, water, yeast, salt,olive oil, crushed tomatoes and some cheese. 26 pounds?

Don't forget the cost to lease the space, for that location you are looking right around £120 sqft per month. That part of London is not a cheap place to do business, much like the Village in NYC, you look at it and think has to be cheap, then see the rental prices.

Joes Pizza in NYC is $23 for a 21inch Margherita. Not a million miles off the £24 for a 20inch Homeslice Margherita. I think you are thinking about prices in the past, they have gone up everywhere recently.

First pizza was way too expensive for some dough and toppings, although you said the flavours were good. (But so they should for the price). Second one was good value, and at the end of the day, a pizza isn't fine dining, it's to fill you up.

Another great review, Gary, pizza is very subjective, a proper thin crust pizza with a nice crust around the edge, baked in a wood fire own,is very hard to beat. Been to Naples many times and always enjoy a few pizza's. Never been to Homeslice, we usually go to Eataly for pizza, but been to Icco, and it's fine for a pizza made in a gas oven and with ingredients which aren't top notch, ergo they can charge less. Just curious, but would you say your Naples pizzas were the best you've had? There's a whole mythos about Naples pizza, the best you can get, where they originated etc... I've been a few times myself, and though they're very good, I wouldn't say amazing. FTR, my most memorable pizza was had in Pisa :)

@@jfergs.3302 if you go the birthplace restaurant of Neapolitan pizza, it's the best piece of pizza you can put in your mouth. But unfortunately the pizza industry in Naples had become more of a tourist trap, so now, it's difficult to find the best spots. But there is in fact a law in Naples on how the pizza is supposed to be made, if you want to call your pizza Neapolitan pizza in Naples, the pizzeria has to follow that law.

If your in the mood to do another Pizza review Gary. The best in London is Vincenzos in Bushey. Vincent makes 200 pizza a day and sells out every day so you have to pre order. Perfect mix of Neopolitan and New York style.

Fantastic review as always-they get better and better! It was really fascinating seeing you enjoy the two experiences, and explain the differences between the two. HomeSlice looks amazing and succulent with great quality tomato sauce, however Icco looks really interesting too. I may go for Icco if I had to choose. The first one looked alright, although it was thin, and I could do without all the lawn trimmings on top. I'm a meat and cheese kind of person, onion, peppers, mushrooms, and black olives are the only other things I like on my pizza. The second one looked better to me, more like what I like in a pizza. Good point, when you divide it by two, it's not such a pricey pizza. I like this way of eating a restaurant pizza - choosing one between two, with two totally different toppings, makes the experience much more interesting. I liked the look of that one, as personally I prefer a thin pizza. Some pizza arrives at the table way too thick and dough-ey for my taste. That makes the whole thing horribly filling - one slice and you're done!

Great review again. On first glance the second pizza looked better but you’re right - 2 could share the first one so price wise not a lot of difference, my only negative was I thought the margarita half looked boring - there looked to be some great choices on the menu tho. As for olives - first had them on a holiday to corfu 1980 and loved them ever since. Wouldn’t say no to either pizza have to say 👍

Great video. Funnily enough, I used to go to icco pizza on Goodge Street whilst at uni in 2005. Amazing pizzas, great atmosphere and price point (even now)! The first pizza also looked good but definitely agree that the margarita should have had more cheese

For me, Pizza is def a lunch or snack, I would never go out for an evening meal and have it. They do them really well here, lovely thin crust with sesame seeds. OK, the first one you tried, I would love ..... the side with Rocket, Salami, and Parmesan for me please. The second one looked like any old pizza from Tesco to me. Although I love olives. I have to admit to not being particularly into pizza, I think it’s because after a couple of slices I get bored with just eating something that’s one flavour throughout. I also have an absolute dislike of rocket which seems to go on or in everything these days. I prefer some olives to others, but don’t have them very often. I think I liked the look of the second pizza, although both looked very well cooked. I think I struggle to figure out how much is charged for pizzas in general (not supermarket ones) it always seems so expensive, although ICCO were very reasonably priced. As usual a cracking review, I do worry when you sit outside that your food goes cold quickly 😀

Just remember that a 20" round pizza has about three times the area of a 12" pizza. Therefore the the 12" here is not cheaper (although they may offer 20" pizza at a better value).

Got to be honest, I have a Pizza oven which cooks them in 60 seconds proper neopolitan style, max cost per 16inch Pizza is £3 and thats going some with the toppings, we still enjoy going out for Pizza as well, but my kids always vote mine as better......so does the wife......so it must be true!!!!! You are right though, Pizza and beer is a no brainer!!!

20 inches is the equivalent of 4 10 inch pizzas or almost 3 12 inch pizzas so people saying its expensive are missing the £ per square inch. £26 for 3 12 inches is better than most places

The second pizza looked like a NY pizza,it’s all about the cheese here.Most pizzas here are 16-18 inches,and usually a little more done on the bottom.I would like to try a couple of the first restaurant’s pizza,the Pesto,and the Al Capino,sounded delicious,your pizza would have cost $32:50 here,rocket isn’t my choice on pizza,I’m more of a broccoli,mushroom person.

Black olives - I hated them until my mid 30s too. Then I went on holiday to Andorra. I had no Euros and only one restaurant in the village would take credit cards. I hadn’t eaten all day and waited on their doorstep for them to open at 7pm. Having confirmed I could pay with Visa, I ordered a steak and while waiting they brought me a bowl of olives. I was so hungry I ate the lot - and fell in love with olives!

Ooh pizza 🍕 lovely. Home Slice looked a nice restaurant. £26 sounds a lot but it's only £4 more than Dominos and you get a lot more. I have no idea why pizzas have hardly any cheese on them these days. I love thin pizza. I could handle that on my own I am ashamed to say. I always ask for the service charge to be removed then give the money to the server. Icco looked fun. I think the pizza you ordered looked delicious and it has cheese on it!!! The price was outstanding. They say tastes change as you get older. I never liked anchovies on a pizza, now they are my first choice topping where available. I'm going with Gary's view as you had to eat it!!!!

The first one looked great, and yeah you could have that with 2 people, I think I wouldn't be completely full but neither would I be with that 12 inch one. The first one looked actually like an authentic pizza from Italy, wooden oven, thin, simple, fresh, high quality ingredients used sparingly, no need to clogg it full of stuff. The second one looks like your run of the mill, average takeaway pizza. Nothing wrong with it, but I wouldn't go out to eat there. All things considering, if you'd eat the first pizza there with the salami and such, that'd be like 33 bucks ish with the service fee, or 16.5 each if you'd share it, which seems very reasonable in London. I used to not like olives either, now I do llove them but in small quantities. Like 5-10 as finger food or on a pizza. Great video!

While both had nice, thin crusts, I would go for Homeslice. The higher quality ingredients were apparent. Icco reminded me of what we get in the US from a fast food chain pizza restaurant. Neither one had oregano on it, which was disappointing.

The "tanning shop " use to be "Electric beach" years ago.... Home slice is amazing . But ICCO is something else..no one else does such good pizza for the prize .Also knew a lady who would put the "Buzzer" in her knickers and wait for it to go off !

I would go for the first one, here in York Gary, we struggle to get a 9" pizza for less than about £12, typically we pay around £18 just for a 13" pizza....but the second one for the price, it's acceptable 😊

ICCO or ECCO as it used to be known has been there for over 20 years, and prices have stayed reliably affordable, I recall they were under £2 each in 2002 when I fist started going (I think 1.39 if memory serves me right). Excellent quality and value for money.

The second pizza was 36% the size of the first one.(6 squared divided by 10 squared) with 6 and 10 being the respective radius. The price of second pizza was 8/26=30.7% So even taking the size into account, the second won was about 20% better value for money. But if the flavors in the first one were much better, it maybe worth the 20% premium.

Haven’t been to Homeslice for a few years now. Was one of my wife and I’s favourite pizza places (before the prices are what they are now), heck was the first place we went on a date, even the day after our wedding, become a celebration spot, so I’ll always give them credit for doing something different topping wise. Second place again good time and great pizza for the price (same as Pizza Union) always tasty and satisfying. Now tempted to suggest Homeslice again 😂

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but the £26 pizza is only slightly more expensive if you take into account surface area. The large pizza would be £9.38 if the size of the smaller one.

Both pizzas looked good to me although Margarita pizza is not an option I would go for. Can't fault the cheaper place looked good value. I would only go to the more expensive place because you said the 12.5% service charge was discretionary. I won't eat anywhere that has a mandatory service charge. I tip if I want to. So I would be happy with either place. I must say though, I've always considered pizza to be vastly over priced for what it actually is. Bread with various toppings.

I hated olives, like a bitter boring grape, then accidentally ordered a pizza with them on almost exactly like that one, and a year later im slicing garlic stuffed olives and whacking them on frozen pizzas to save money. Cant get enough. Great video

I from the states and I was stationed near Oxford in 1985, the first pizza I ordered in Britain was at Bogart's Pizza in Oxford, I forget what toppings but one was olives and when it had unpitted olives on it. I thought that was so strange
