Initially you have mentioned that GC or GLC is a partitioning based chromatography. This concept never appeared later and I think that is the most important factor in separation. A low boiling liquid may elute later depending on partition coefficient. That is the reason different columns are employed for different type of mixtures. Partition coefficient is also affected by polarity of the solid phase. Anyway with GC most common detector is FID (Flame ionization Detector).
