That title got me thinking. I reckon Americans are noticing gas prices now because they are normally very low and they are used to having cheap, plentiful fuel. Hence the giant trucks that you see carrying around one person.. But virtually every other developed country in the world pays way more for gas than they do. What is super expensive in America is regarded as super cheap elsewhere. I don't think they realise how good they've got it.

"That's 2 Jeeps, it won't lift that" LOL.... funny how easy it is to put things into perspective sometimes. I used to work around stealth combat aircraft and in those facilities, safety, cleanliness, FOD control, etc... is a non-stop priority. However, you lose sight of what (seemingly) little incidents actually cost. In the break room of one of these facilities, there was a poster on the wall with no words on it that graphically showed how the damage resulting from dropping a tool on the top of the wing on this aircraft = 3 Dodge Vipers. There's not a single other poster I can even remember, but I can still see that one in mind plain as day.

yup had the same issue on a medevac. The crew of the ground ambulance was too impatient to wait for the pilot to guide them in and started backing up without a spotter and backed into our wing...of course they hit things like they normally do...no big deal on their end but broke the lens of the marker light on the wing. Took the plane out of commission till we could get an airworthiness check done. a broken light on their truck doesn't phase them one bit but to air ops its a huge deal and very expensive mistake that could be avoided.

A modern trick I saw to keep loads from rotating: Get some fishing magnets like the Neosmuk 2.5" (these are rated to 550lbs). Put one on either end of the item being lifted and rope or bungee them to the thumb or arm, optionally with additional magnets. That way it stays at whatever angle you set no matter how you move or rotate the arm, boom, cab or tracks and you can still use both hands for operating. Since they are only being used to counteract rotation, you should never exceed the 550lbs per magnet.

Just food for thought. Maybe think of a double deck fueling station with a troff under and a lean-to roof just covering as not to get rain in yet will contain any over splash that may occur. Everything is pretty and clean when you start but it goes down hill quick. Just an idea.
@Morgan2XL3 жыл бұрын
Depending on local regs the fuel spill containment trough under the tank can be mandatory. Otherwise the tank has to be double walled and have so many bells and whistles. ( which might explain the cheap deal.) Saves fuel in the groundwater/ well and a $100k + cleanup bill. Had a bunch of wild fire aircraft refueling facilities that were all lining up for re tanking due to new regs, 25 years ago.....

Lol, my father started his tractor while on the seat but forgot to take it out of gear. The Massey Furgeson requires the high/low shifter to be in the Start position to start. It was a cold -20 day and he thought after it sat idling in the shop for 10 minutes that he'd put it in low gear range to let the gearbox start heating up. He reached in from the steps and slammed it into low. Well the tractor was still in 2nd gear from when he had parked it a few days earlier, and it lurched forward and put a tractor sized hole out the back of the shop. 🚜😂 That's what farm insurance is for.

WLL on a shackle stands for working load limit. Also not all rated shackles have a colored bolt. That is a brand specific thing. You should always bear in mind as well that any rated device used for lifting or climbing or bearing a load is designed with a safety factor when it comes to the ratings. The safety factor is used to calculate the actual tested breaking point of the device. For an example that 4.5 ton shackle could have a safety factor as high as four or even six depending on the maker and design and that would put its breaking point as high as 18 or 27 tons. These things in mind loading it to its full 4.5 ton rating is well within its capabilities to safely handle with no concerns of split or pull directions. Just some points to keep in mind.
@DennisBeamIV3 жыл бұрын
“Working Load Limit” Cody. Its usually a safety factor of 5 or 10 from the MBS (min breaking strength). The 20k I would assume is the MBS of 20 kiloNewtons
@feluver3 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking more likely the number of loading cycles that the WLL is calculated from or something like that. MBS on a shackle like that should be more like 60-100kn. After all, a tiny wire-gated aluminum carabiner can be rated to 22kn.
@bjornagjertsen3 жыл бұрын
Working Load Limit is correct, but the safety factor on steel equipment (chain, shackles, hooks etc.) is 4 (xWLL). Steel rope (aka. wire) have a safety factor ranging between 5.5 and 4 depending on rope thickness. Certified fibre straps (for lifting) got a safety factor of 7.
@feluver3 жыл бұрын
@@bjornagjertsen WLL = MBL/(some safety factor). There are a lot of different ways of determining all of this. Totally depends on the standard chosen by the manufacturer. It is not true that there is a different safety factor for "steel equipment". Maybe what you're talking about is a heuristic from a particular field in a particular country? In this case, even if the safety factor is only 4, that would make the WLL=20kn/4=5kn, which is a lot less than 4.5 tons... It can't make sense for the WLL to be higher than the MBL, which is the case if you believe the MBL to be 20kn. I also don't think a reputable manufacturer would ever shorten a scientific unit, kn, to k, because that is ambiguous.
@DGJ963 жыл бұрын
20k would be the batch/certificate number I think brother
@feluver3 жыл бұрын

The 45° marks don’t have anything to do the strength of the shackle. If you have two slings on the shackle the stress on them becomes greater as the angle becomes greater. 45° is a general guide line angle in which you shouldn’t exceed without doing some math because the stress on the sling starts to become multiple times the actual weight of the load
@ericholman61163 жыл бұрын
We must think alike. I have been looking into doing the same thing. Not quite as big as your going. Thinking 100 gallons each of diesel and premium unleaded, non ethanol of course.

Just a thought for you on your paint. Buy the silver reflective paint from tractor supply. And then just use your stickers in green for diesel red for gasoline. Better for long-term fuel storage if you don't have anything keeping the sun off your tanks. I'm an easy coast man so take that idea with a grain of salt. As you know the East Coast men are not the sharpest knives in the drawer

On the shackles if you dont want it to be permanent after you screw the pin in all the way back it off a quarter of a turn, that way you wont need a pair of plyers to get it off. On a machine like that it is a good idea to tighten it up, but be careful on what you lift because it may get strained and you will have to cut it off.

I caution you on leaving the shackle in that machine... not all the buckets have enough clearance, mainly worry about it if trenching and the shackle gets adjusted by the side walls as the stick and bucket cycle through different amounts of clearances with in the geometry. I have had to cut a few shackles off a few different machines. Load chart should be on the glass by the right joystick 🕹. It's working live load not working load limit?
