Hey Eric let me start off by saying that in all of KZbin, your videos offer the absolute highest amount of relevant technical content per unit of time watched. Hands down...no contest . Heck , I paid Darin about $600 for a lot of what you offer for free. I mean that was a while ago and I still consider it the best 600 I ever spent but I still appreciate what you are doing. Second, get you some EFI. I convert Harleys into "manual flex fuel vehicles" and alcohol is liquid torque. Most of my builds like to hit lambda .82-.825 by 150-200 rpm before the torque peak and then taper out to .85ish by the horsepower peak. I'm a big time data shithead and being able to tune each cylinder as it's own separate engine is like a gift from heaven. On a Harley with alcohol a 3000rpm spread from peak torque (low 4k's rpm) to peak hp (low 7k's) is a reality . Give it a try sometime

Eric, excellent content as always. You can hear the car beginning to recover from the tight converter out about 150 ft. a 6100-6200 rpm stall would let that thing leave like it had been hit from behind by another car...LOL....but you're going to a supercharged 406 next year so what's the point other than burning up more time and money......honestly, for as much as the engine is handicapped by the tight converter and the weight of the vehicle and awful weather the thing really flies....its a great showcase for your porting/ cam design and engine building skills.....please keep the videos coming....thanks!!!!

Methanol also makes more torque because the oxygen content by weight is 50 percent. Low rpm doesn’t have as much cylinder temp so it’s not all about heat absorption. The cooling effect is more horsepower on a forced induction application from the cooling effect itself and this is why it’s a larger difference compared to an NA engine.

Methanol isn’t self oxidizing as I understand it, but I guess it depends on how you define that. But it does have a much lower stoichiometric AFR, about half that of gasoline. But still a lot higher than nitro.

At this point, I think 100 shot would give you the tq you need to get out of the hole, and I bet won’t have that draw down on the converter but you may have to go back to the 4.30 to have the gear to run it out, what do you think? With the fuel out of the gas tank, and good air I think it will be knocking on 10.50s

Nice work! You shared a ton of information that people can learn from. I hope to see some testing done while you’re headed toward the rich side. I’ve been around these circumstances several times and it’s always fun to see seemingly small changes deliver such large results. I do not think you’re crowding anything for area on the intake side. Just a maybe on the exhaust side for methanol. I’d like to see some easy changes made on that side. Maybe a tighter lash, rocker ratio change. I could be out in left field with that idea.

Only problem I have with gas is weather changes, humidity, and after 4th round, or double entry's. Hard to keep it cool. The q16 is good to eliminate weather fluctuations, but it's unreasonably expensive. Slightly more stable a little fat running c14 vp. I am finally making the switch to alcohol this winter though.

That rear end acts surprisingly good. Not perfect by a long shot, but could be a lot worse. I would try to get the power valve to work, and tune the jets for part throttle starting at 50% and pushing it to 100% before hitting second gear. This should take care of the richment on low revs, and lean it out at top end. For the exhaust, everything could be a size bigger. The heat colouring comes from restriction. 1/4 inch bigger primaries, 1" bigger collectors, x-pipe and Nascar style wide ends. Transition from head to tube needs to be smooth and about 4" long, and the ends about foot wide pointing upwads and aft. This helps with scavenging on high speeds, and pushes the rear down on low speeds.

Good stuff, Eric! Very interesting. You mentioned the possible loss of power due to the methanol evaporation caused by heat. I was wondering if using something like the Snow Performance boost cooler would help with that. I know it is a mix of water and methanol, and I have seen good results with gas engines, both NA and boosted. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! o7 PS: You really have to speak to your cameraman(woman) about filming the burnouts! LOL! At least we got to see one of them though!

@Dr_Xyzt

Methanol boils at 140F. -- I don't think methanol evaporation is really what gets us. When the fuel hits a surface above its boiling point, the fuel converts from liquid phase to gas phase and occupies more space that would otherwise be occupied by useful air. -- I have a theory on how to test this. A small block chevy with standard valve angles will lose more power at the top end where the horsepower is already beginning to decline. This implies that the fuel is hitting the head and cylinders due to all of their crooked geometry. The mid-range power is probably killer though, because the fuel is kept suspended in the air and has time to exchange heat.

Eric, did you upgrade your fuel pump? Do you have a g meter in your system? A loose rule of thumb is 8 psi of fuel pressure is lost for every 1 g of acceleration. So for example if you are pulling 2 g’s of acceleration and have 16 psi of fuel pressure, the fuel will literally stop in the line for a moment and I have seen many layover issues caused by this issue and people always think their pump is strong enough and never is.

That under hood temperature is killing your engine power. I tried a K&N velocity stack on a flat hood and it improved.2 tenths in the 1/4. Methanol burns slower and is self originated so the richer it is (within reason) the more torque it will make. It’s not rich enough if it’s not burning your eyes and nose lol. You can purchase scented oil additives for methanol to help with the stinging plus it helps keep the aluminum fuel fittings from getting eaten away by the methanol. (Been there done that). Best of luck

Hey Eric; great video (I hope my comment is helpful to you) keep up the good work 👍 1.) Are you adding an upper cylinder lube? (if you aren't I'd suggest it for the corrosion protection alone, but it can actually help performance slightly, and Klotz is about the best). 2.) If you switch from track-methanol/M1 to VP-M5 you could gain up to 2-tenths (it will cost more, you will use more [+10-15% fuel demand increase], and your current practice of draining the system post race is 100%-NESSARY) but its big gain for not much change to your setup. 3.) The carb spacer on methanol can make a pretty big difference due to the sheer volume & size of the droplets entering the engine (sometimes the anti reversion type spacers pick up on a methanol due to the shearing effect alone, not from what the spacer is advertised to do). 4.) There are certain spark plugs / heat ranges better suited than others for M1 and M5 that can show some gains, as can tuning the gaps, due to plug wetting and ignition strength. 5.) You may be surprised, but MORE engine temp may run faster; on mechanically injected sprint cars, its pretty well known power can increase by 10-15% when the dyno water is increased from 140F to 200-210F (your mileage may vary depending on the tune up). 6.) Not sure how much you played with timing on the dyno on methanol but it can be a bit fickle when the AFR's are on the rich side (not due to detonation but due to plug wetting), so there may be some more left, especially if you change to M5 / change plugs / change coolant temp. 7.) if you decide to cut the extensions down, I'd recommend slash cutting them at a 30-45 degree angle with the short side of the cut being at your expected ideal length, this lessens vena-contracta and conditions the return wave like a reverse cone on a megaphone extension would; it probably wont be worth anything , but it has the best chance of a tangible benefit.

You're lean on every pull! I don't understand why you're trying to keep it stoich at the torque curve. In my experience Methanol afr needs to be at 5.4 to 5.7 for NA power tuning and 6.1 to 6.4 at idle. Boosted applications need to be 4.8 to 5.2 but maybe it's different with your altitude where you're at. I'd have to take some gear out of that thing! I don't like being on the chip while crossing the line like a lot of people suggest. That generally means you have overshot it. Most people shift a little after peak HP, so that tells me I'd be better off crossing the stripe a little before the rpm that I make shifts at.

Dig it I'm in your corner on this one, I'd be fattening up till I know I'm going wrong. It wasn't rich on fuel and then gained torque by switching to alcohol. The truck sounds over geared or something as he stated there is some stall issue or delay going on at launch

5.7:1 isn't exactly rich. The lambda for that number is 0.9 which is like 12.5:1 on gas. -- Yeah, 12.5:1 on gas is kinda fat, but it's not THAT fat. I mean, 9.0 on gas is FAT, which is a 0.73 lambda and your 4.8:1 methanol value. -- For naturally aspirated power, I think it's perfectly fine to tune methanol to relatively stoichiometric levels. It has 6 times more cooling power than gas, and knocks at a higher temperature, so a good running gas engine will LOVE methanol. -- Methanol is a very simple molecule, so it combusts more predictably, even if the mixture is off by a little bit.

@@Dr_Xyzt and the C/R at 11.9.... What are your thoughts ?
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt Жыл бұрын
@@rtkl13 I would keep it that way. He's gonna need a really tall dome to get closer to 14:1. I estimate that you can run 14:1 compression on a cam like the stock LS3 cam, and not have knock with methanol. If you go with less compression, like 13:1, since the fuel boils below the engine temperature, the fuel will passively cool the engine and make the compression cycle easier! End result is a more durable engine!
