Agreed. When someone asks for help from folks viewed as experts, there is a power dynamic that is being abused here. We know the suicide rate among folks sent to conversion therapy is way higher than those who grow up in affirming homes. This is like someone going to a doctor for a hang nail on their hand, asking the doc to amputate their foot, and the doc doing it. It's harmful, unnecessary, and doesn't actually solve the real problem.

I went through 13 years of reparative therapy that included electronic shock therapy which actually proved medically I was born gay. It was done by a psychiatrist who was President of the Baptist Church here at the time. I have since learned that the entire medical medical profession declassified homosexuality as an illness 50 years ago. It did enormous damage. A 51 year marriage to my accepting wife did not change a thing.

Firstly, she put Christian in quotation marks, which to me indicates she understands the irony that they would call themselves Christians. Secondly, while I am a follower of Christ, I do recognize that a multitude of LGBTQ people have had only abusive relationships with every religious person and institution that they ever encountered. I always have the inclination to say "I am Christian, but not one of those! We have a ton of out LGBTQ in my church!" It isn't always helpful. I have relatives who are happy that is the case, but who were so hurt and abused by the "church" that they could never come to terms with attending again, even if it was a gay affirming congregation. That kind of pain can easily be erased, and we need to live with our discomfort.

I really like this video. It is important. I'm not religious, but I used to be. What struck me was that as a kid you prayed for god to change you. I simply prayed for him to let me die before I woke up every night. That didn't work either. Gay conversion, will never work. I always knew deep down, that I could never change the fact that I was attracted to other guys. What a lot of people need, is self acceptance therapy, and to know that other people can love them.

Many people can probably relate to that. For me it lasted for over twenty years, from Jr. high, until I was well past thirty. It took me that long to accept myself, because of my upbringing and how society treated me. Believe me I know how devastating it can be. That is why it is important to speak or write about it. Letting people know that the past was painful, but we get over it, may help others with their internal struggles.

shots autism: So you think gay people should castrate themselves? That is just about as sick as anything I have ever heard. Self mutilation could not possibly solve any emotional problems a person has. The fact is I don't want to change who I am. I like that the possibility exists that I might fall in love with another man, and he may love back. I do not want to reduce my attractions to other guys. I have learned that what I was taught as a child, and the way society treated me was wrong. I never did anything that hurt anyone because I was gay. I only hurt myself, and perhaps another boy that loved me when we were teenagers, because I could not accept myself. Because I could not accept myself, I was also unable to accept his love. Even though I really think I loved him, I rejected him. That was wrong, and hurt both of us. I lived in isolation, except for when I was at work for over thirty years, because of depression, internalized homophobia, and fear of rejection. I now fully accept who I am. I hope that it is still possible to find love. I believe it is, even though I am older, and have medical issues. I live in constant physical pain, but I no longer live in constant emotional pain. I am actually happier than I have ever been in my life. Self acceptance, and the acceptance of others, for me was the change that made life worth living. I now have better relations with family members, and those I work with, because I am no longer living a lie about who I am. They all accept me as I am. They also all know that I am gay.

Randy D. sometimes i wish i was fully straight again but i can relate to your story about when u were a teen. i just quit trucking last week after only about 3 weeks because the hours r like 15-20 a day & it's tough working around 21 days in a row. In Riverside, Ca there's this young man with curly hair who works at the Walmart distribution center where i dropped off a load. He looked so cute but since i quit trucking due to the lack of sleep & lack of days off it looks like i'll never get to see him or talk to him again. (I gave my BOL to him & he did my paperwork & i talked to him other times that night.) It's hard knowing this & i think its another reason why i miss trucking because although i drove 48 there would've always been that possibility of seeing him again as my company does a lot of food loads. It was easier being straight, especially since mom is Christian & those attractions are not good? I'm a eunuch now & i'm not sure if that's why my brain changed but now my concern is i have to eat VERY healthy to keep my bones strong. Sometimes I think it's better being attracted to no one & when i'm really tired this is how it almost is being a eunuch so i basically know what its like being asexual (also i have no libido). Other times i miss having full attraction to women, but thats partly because i associate that with when i was younger (im 30 now). I haven't watched porn since 2015 & never have visual stimulation because most of the attraction faded out with T, so there's never anything (visual stimulation) to look forward to. Testosterone is so powerful i used to have this crush on a girl at work & it faded out so much she's not attractive anymore. I just started a list of eunuch effects on my phone & so far i'm up to 107! Half are awesome, half are bad. If someone could eat healthy being a eunuch isn't so bad after menopause. I prefer it but i also miss my old self so i don't know. Not going bald is really nice but being hot is not. I found quite the cure! So far I haven't been able to convince any men to join me lol! its quite remarkable i may be one of the few ppl who figured out how to expand my sexual orientation (if other eunuchs go through that?) but i feel bad right now about the feelings of missing someone. i had a crush on a guy at Amazon & im starting back there next week & i wonder if the attraction will still be there. it seems like if i stop using my grounding line to sleep at 0 volts i seem to lose some attraction to women? i wish i could try 100% asexual instead of mostly asexual but i dont want to stop grounding & the voltage difference isn't that big of an influence

I'm sorry that that was the version of God that was presented to you. That sounds horrible. I don't want to impose, but if it was the Christian God being talked about, you didn't have to give up belief in him because of your sexuality. I found www.gaychurch.org recently and it was pretty helpful, some of the articles seemed a little fanciful but others had genuinely good arguments.

As a straight person I find the whole idea of "conversion therapy" offensive. ffs it is not a choice it's who they are; getting a dog or cat is a choice; sexual orientation is not a choice. When my niece came out to me when she was 30 years old, she was worried that it would change the way I felt about her. I was initially shocked and a little bit angry that she would even think such a thing, I told her that nothing that she could do would change they way I felt about her; you are my niece and nothing was going to change that as long as she remained the good and caring person that she is and that I love her. She is engaged to equally loving and caring person. They have a cat and I tease them about being a lesbian couple with a cat. I told them getting a cat is a choice! Their response what since they live in a small condo in Toronto they don't have room for a dog as soon as they are able to afford a house with a yard they will be getting a dog.

It's irrelevant if it's a choice or not, it's like fighting on the religious fundamentalists terms. It's like arguing about the effectiveness of conversion therapy instead of the real issue of CT being morally wrong and psychologically damaging. It's like trying to argue for pot legalization by saying it has medical uses instead of the more important issue of individual autonomy. Imo

At no point does the Bible Condemn non-paedophile non-incestuous same-sex romantic, loving monogamous committed relationships between peers. In fact John's Gospel clearly proves that Christ himself was gay. The disciple John was known as the beloved disciple the one that Jesus loved. If Jesus loved all of his disciples equally the only logical conclusion for Christ's singling out John as his beloved is that Christ and John were in a romantic relationship.

budd2nd Not the same for everyone at all and a harmful generalisation. Growing up, most of my LGBT friends and I had very limited interactions with religious communities yet that did not stop a good number of them self harming and going through depression. Currently, I am most happy with my sexuality now in a positive community and having converted to Catholicism. Is this the same for everyone? No, of course not. Sadly, there are many harmful religious communities out there and it disgusts me to think of what they do to one another. However, to generalise that all religious communities are more negative and less accepting than non religious communities is false. For example, recently in China, mass amounts of LGBT media has been completely banned but this is not the case in the USA, which is a strong Christian country. There’s good and bad of everything, including Christians, atheists, Muslims, agnostics and every other religion under the Sun.

Paige Evans I agree. When it comes to the homophobes I personally know, only about half of them are homophobic due to religion. Many are Atheist. The most homophobic political party in my country has a huge number of Atheist followers. A good friend of mine is the (gay) daughter of a reverend and he has declared his church a "rainbow zone" and he has spoken out numerous times in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. One thing I have noticed though is that extremists are overwhelmingly more homophobic. But your average person who happens to follow a religion is not more likely to be homophobic than your average Atheist.

I didn't have conversion therapy thrown at me. I knew when I was 4, that I should have been a girl. I went to my mom with the Sears and Roebuck catalog open to the little girls dresses and I asked her why I couldn't wear them. She told me that I was a boy and boys didn't wear dresses. It took me another 40 years before I became my true self. When I started living as Karen, I experience discrimination from my employer and the customers that we delivered for. I endured a 19 1/2 month unemployed period before I was hired by a mortgage bank. I was hired because of my expertise and my honesty because I laid everything about me on the table. I am now retired at 66 years of age; but, every now and then, discrimination jumps up and bites me in the butt. I stand tall and hold my head up high because I KNOW who I am. truth If you are gay or know someone who is, this is important information! Sexual orientation is determined in the womb during fetus development. Various hormones are introduced at specific times to accomplish this .The fetus plays no part in this process. A person is, therefore, born with a predetermined attraction. It is, therefore, not a choice & consequently not a sin & not immoral. It is a natural expression of mammals & found commonplace in nature. Intelligent research in this area clearly explains this process. If you are truly interested in truth, based on knowledge, the book Gay, Straight & the Reason Why by Dr. Simon Levay shows this with numerous research articles. If you want to understand the truth & have respect for yourself & others this book will help. It also has, unlike the bible written over 2000 years by men that had no understanding of science, an extensive bibliography. I strongly recommend the book. Don’t let the religious pull you down to their level of ignorance. Peace

I'm assuming you are under 18, so I want you to know that by striking out on your own and sleeping in your car or other questionable places you are vulnerable to adults who prey on young people such as yourself who will either force you into sex working under a pimp or sex trafficking, and even if this doesn't happen immediately, you are also vulnerable to people who will target you for physical abuse, murder, theft of property, etc., and police are also very likely to harass you, impound your car, or jail you. There are just too many things that could happen depending on where you live and social attitudes around LGBTQ+ issues and homelessness. There are many places that are out there who will help you find a safe place to be, if only you look around. Also, be sure to save up enough money for you to at least get to that place, which may be outside of your city, county, or state. Just be safe! With All My Love to you as you journey through your life and find your place.

I came out in 1982 and immediately went into therapy. The first thing the therapist said to me was that gay is NOT an affliction and there was nothing to cure. She offered her services to help me accept who and what I was. Note that this was 42 YEARS AGO, and yet there are still cranks out there offering conversion therapy. Disgusting! Thank you, John Becker, for your immense courage.

I remember that I was coming home from OzCon in 2011 when the presidential race was warming up. I was travelling by Greyhound and had accidentally missed a reboard call and spent several hours at the station with CNN on. They were talking about Bachmann's conversion therapy. At OzCon, I'd met many openly gay people, and had even felt some attraction to a longtime friend I'd finally met in person. It was this that made me think that being gay wasn't a choice and shouldn't be anything to be ashamed of, revising my position on homosexuality. By the next year's OzCon, I'd finally come out myself. So thanks, John, for being part of that conversation that ultimately made me a better person.

If you are gay or know someone who is, this is important information! I used to live in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin for 41 years. I am a gay may. I knew about Michelle Bachman and her coterie of religious fantasies. As a Senator she pushed hard for funding for a new bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota - and it just happened to replace an old bridge in Stillwater, MN, where she lives and works. Her husband is NOT a physician nor does he have a PhD. Quack would be the best word to describe the horrors and injustices of what he and his wife have done to society. These kinds of people are evil personified. It is they who need psychiatric help - better yet, prison terms.

I recently have come to terms with my sexuality (I'm bi), when I found out I had a break down (and still do) in fear. I haven't told my parents yet because I'm so scared. My parents are nice and loving, they can be tough at times but they really care; but I'm scared at how they will react if I come out. I know my mom is all for conversion therapy, she is very religious and believes the being gay is wrong. I'm scared of telling them because I don't want to go to a conversion therapist, but I also don't want my parents to force me to only be attracted to males. What doesn't help is that my mom especially isn't a big fan of bi people, she believes that they are more likely to cheat. When my brother came out as trans, I will never forget what my dad asked "but you still like boys, right". Whenever I'm attracted to a girl, that's all I can think of. I know that I'm lucky, because at least I still like boys, but I don't know what to do, I want to stop hating this part of me and accept it, but I can't. If you read all this, thanks for listening to my rant, I have no one to talk to about this, so thanks! I hope you have a good day!

@@juanvelez8564 the truth If you are gay or know someone who is, this is important information! Since I was born in the late 50s,if I had been able to tell my parents about the feelings I was having towards other boys, I would have been locked up as a deviant. I didn't come out until I was 24. But I also realized that I was a gay asexual male.

And she would call me every single day and try to convince me to go thru it. My abuser was already charged for what he did to me and I never saw my parents in the same light I used to. They didn't support me at all when I wanted to pursue legal actions about my abuser, they didn't support me emotionally, so why would I want to keep them in my life. Hell, no.

I am a 62 year old straight man. I will never forget going to Six Flags when I was 9 years old and seeing the first brown girl with black hair. I had an instant crush on her that almost hurt. As the other kids were excited as I was before I saw the girl all I could think about was the girl I so much wanted to talk to. I had no control of my desire for this little girl as I am sure boys also feel the same about boys. We can't control what gender or race we are attracted. anyone who ever had a crush when they were young should understand. My only problem is I am only attracted to gorgeous women. I am widowed and my wife was absolutely the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen. My mother was always gorgeous so I always assumed that was why I can only be attracted to gorgeous women, inside and out.

Fell in love twice an the second time, i had self esteem issues with my size an staying hard an this grew worse. Its gotten worse and worse over the 8 months. Ive tried looking an imagining what itd be like w a guy but i cant imagine it. I guess why im asking this is i wanted to know, how you knew you were gay. I cant get off to gay porn. But for some reason i can get off to imagining myself doing wierd stuff. Idk anything anymore. I have a gf at the moment, that i feel guilty for dating , i think what if im leading her on, or what if i really want to be with a guy , an end up hurting her, an its really embaressing for me, cause i dont look like someone whos gay.. When we first started dating 6 months ago, the sex was pretty consistent i think. Now i have like no sex drive.
