I volunteer at an organization in my hometown in Puerto Rico who is managing a community art gallery, a cabaret style theater where we also do forums, a second hand store, a community garden, a risk reduction program for addicts and street workers, and a community kitchen. Our volunteers don't get paid. We have no employees because we can't afford them. We are living in Puerto Rico post Maria. Our contribution value in a yearly basis is almost a million dollars, calculating the hours worked for free by our volunteers and the goods donations we receive for the community. The municipal government does not recognize that contribution. The state government is looking to sell off what we have, our assets, risking our future and our environment thinking this is the best way to develop the community. Yes, we need to start thinking different on the concept of real value, and elect people to represent us that understand this.

I spaced out in the shower today and brushed my teeth for like 5 minutes. Is this improving the economy? Work you do on yourself (exercise, reading, meditating) are not a part of the economy though they may directly lead to economic benefits. Likewise, work done for and within the family unit does not count. Families are and ought to be interdependent enough that the work is akin to work on the self. This should not be problematic. I spend hours each week learning music and whenever I accomplish something I'm proud of people ask the save question. "what did you get paid for that?" Things like reading to your children, diy and art projects, and even maintaining a good lawn are things better valued outside of an economic frame. Bringing them in to econ actually devalues them and puts them alongside the drug dealers and smugglers she addresses at the top.

Government should pay every family allowance to raise theirs kid who are the futures of the country. 1 boy 1 thousand pound per month.
GDP is a post-WW2 metric that represents maintaining American hegemony during the transition from wartime industrial production to the growth-model capital finance emphasis of the Marshall Plan. It is also an incremental step away from the FDR New Deal social contract, towards the market fundamentalism of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism of course, infamously determines the price of everything, while understanding the value of nothing.

@@joeldwest that's one of the many reasons I like Andrew Yang. His freedom dividend will give that to stay at home parents and people who care for their family members. Alot of his policies are geared towards shifting away from GDP as the only measurement of economic success. By informing its measurements with what he calls the American score card which would measure things like family health and wellbeing, financial liquidity and mental health. Aswell as the health and wellbeing of our planet. Which is also vastly important, but not something most US citizens can't even think of because of lack of financial stability. i know this first hand, while I cared about the environment and understood how important making it better was, but not knowing if I could pay for my own life and bills, the planet's wellbeing is a distant idea that I didnt have time or mental capacity for. I was able to get out of this, but there are still so many who can't or are unable to. So, I appreciate that he understands that to really tackle the bigger picture problems, solutions that tackle the problems that individuals and families face must be tackled first. Sorry for the length, I'm really passionate about what Yang will bring to the table.

You're looking at it backwards. We should not be looking to ensure people work long hours and are productive. A good sign of economic growth would be working shorter hours, both unpaid and paid. Therefore skilled people would reflect better on the model than unskilled, and should be what we strive towards. I do still think that time consumption should not be the only metric however, as it doesn't consolidate all of our economic goals into one model, only a few.

Austrian school is pseudoscience.
@neilpatton71745 жыл бұрын
@@Leinja I get where you are coming from and there are valid criticisms of the method (especially from the logical positivist camp), but a short one sentence strafe does not an argument make. If you are prepared to dive into the nuance, we can proceed, but science does not reveal truth, only what it is not (a la Popper) and is ultimately a self-referencing system of assumptions and category (a la Kuhn). So given what most people believe is "science", and the nature of knowledge/epistemology, even science is “pseudoscientific”. Empirical science utterly fails to incorporate the phenomena of consciousness, how do you expect a branch of it (historical/empirical economics) to do what science fails to do in describing economics empirically? Are you familiar enough with Mises to have the conversation?
@batrachian1495 жыл бұрын
@@neilpatton7174 You're trying to scare criticism off by namedropping a buncha of philosophers and philosophical concepts that the average person would not be aware of. Austrian economics is a heterodox school, which means it is at the very least not well-regarded by actual ecanomists. It's bunk.
@neilpatton71745 жыл бұрын
@@batrachian149 Sorry, no. You are assuming motive and doing so in the least charitable way possible. I am pointing out that claims like those are not very well thought out. Probably a conditioned ideological reflex and not a conclusion based on rigorous consideration. That the person making them is doing so out of ignorance is no failing of mine, but belies the dismal state of education, which often lacks any treatment of philosophy, logic, or economics. I was trying to begin a critical dialogue, even beginning my reply by edifying the commenter before criticizing the assertion, not the person making it. Someone who is going to make the claim as such should be able to defend the position or perhaps they should realize they have no business making the claim. Yes, the Austrian school is a heterodox school; however, plenty of "actual" economists assert it as the proper method to address the subject (or are people like Sowell, Hoppe, Klein, Murphy, Hulsmann, et. al., not “real economists”?). Can you argue the merits of the historical approach and the Austrian method, or is that where you are going to leave it, with a halfhearted appeal to the authority of “actual ecanomists”?
@danielpaslay75745 жыл бұрын
You’re assuming she hasn’t read Mises’ work. I find it interesting you say it’s myopic when she’s considering much more than the standard inputs for calculating GDP. How could she possibly broaden her view for calculating GDP? You wouldn’t just be trying to sell memberships to Mises Institute would you?
all the "production" that women do is already accounted for in the gdp by the man's production. all of it is just support for the actual production the men do and is built into the gdp already.
