I was skeptical about this machine until I watched several videos including this one. We purchased one through Lowe’s at their Black Friday special and saved a lot of money. We hired a pluming contractor to install the water lines and attach the drain to the bathroom system. Patched up the wall and set it up. It is a game changer. The technology is mind boggling. Your video was very helpful in the decision making process. Excellent review.

2 valuable tips: don't fill more than 70% of the drum, even to only wash. More than that will not keep enough space to have the clothes properly rolling and this will affect washing and even more drying. Second tip: wash/dry the same kind of clothes. By example: wash/dry light clothes, underwear + t-shirts + socks, then in another round only the towels. Because the drying is made using a moisture sensor, which will measure the average moisture. If you mix, you'll have your underwear dried, but wet towels.

Thank you for doing this video. I have done over 50 loads with this machine, and there are things that I like about it and many things I do not. The likes are obvious. Convenience of one and done. The no vent requirement. The drawer compartments for the liquid detergent and fabric softener are great. However, the dislikes are mounting quickly. First, and most importantly, the clothes are not wrinkle free, like when using a regular dryer. The dewrinkle mode does little to nothing to remove wrinkles from items. Even the towels are rough and wrinkled. 2. The dampness is creepy, and I wonder if, in the future, the clothes will become musty smelling. 3. The maintenance on this machine isn't just cleaning the lint filter as on a regular dryer. It is much more. (See next comment.) 4. The lint issue will most definitely be a fatal flaw of this machine if GE does not address the cheap filter drawer and the fact that ANY lint that escapes to the other side of the machine and collects in the delicate coils will cause damage to the machine. Using a bottle brush can damage the delicate fins on the unit. A more delicate bristle is needed to avoid this type of, what I would imagine would be, warranty-canceling damage. The swiffer is a good idea but doesn't address fuzz in the fins. GE needs an immediate redesign on this drawer to avoid heat pump damage. Lint built up on these coils can and will increase drying time and cause permanent damage. Then the lint build up on thr gasket around the door and on the door is ridiculous. There is also a fine layer of dust on the top of the dryer as it operates. I dust it off between each load. So to believe there isn't dust residue in the air is not accurate. 5. When removing clothes at the end of the cycle, invariably every time, water drips from the top of the gasket down onto the clothes. It is infuriating that this happens. I have a rag to try and catch the dripping, which is ridiculous on an expensive machine like this. 6. So, unlike all the other users, I have experienced the above frustrating things using this machine. GE has a long way to go to get my praises on this machine and its design. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them. Thank you.

I have one suggestion for the water dripping, which I also hate. I've noticed that the bleach and manual fabric softener wells on the top dispenser drawer always seem to have water in them after a load. I've been removing this drawer during the dry cycle to empty the water out of the wells. It's a pain, and not an ideal "fix" but it does cut down on the water dripping. When I had a traditional dryer, I bought a long, thin vacuum attachment to help clean out the vent. Now I use this attachment to vacuum the clumps of lint from the lint compartment after removing the filter. I'm afraid to touch the fins, so I will look into the soft brush you suggested.

We just bought one since our washer and dryer were almost 12 years old and with hard well water I was just waiting for a flood or the drum to fall off. I typically get new appliances and water heaters for that reason at 10 years. My neighbor bought one a month ago and loved it. I am so glad they told me about it because I would have just got another regular stackable. We live in a converted camp at a lake and have very limited space so this is a game changer. And I love that it only needs 110 for power and no vent. I now don’t have to fear a house fire, we could never just run the dryer and go to a neighbors house or go out on the boat for fear of having our dogs left in the house. And the auto dispense is fantastic. And of course never forgetting to swap the laundry to the dryer and no more multiple washes. Great review

We bought a HE Energy Star-rated LG WashTower 20 months ago to replace our 15-year-old Maytags. Wifey loves the extra space it freed up in the utility room as a nice bonus. We have no complaints, it sips electrons as compared to the OLD Maytag. We did look at this model but figured the tech needs a few more years to work out all the bugs and get real-world user data, especially performance and reliability. We are 72 and a unit like this would be perfect if it was perfect, given we have solar with Tesla Powerwall batteries we normally curtail doing laundry during grid outages but the efficiency of this model could allow us to live our lives uninterrupted. We were also looking to replace our 5-year-old electric water heater with a new HP model, but the reviews are all over the board hence my reluctance to buy into TODAY. We'll revisit this new tech next year. We are not early adopters. Funny, living in Europe while serving in the USAF the Europeans have had ALL-IN-ONE units for DECADES. So I guess the US is behind the power curve.

I have 2 units side-by-side we're running, I'll pitch in with my opinions. 1 unit arrived with panel issue, loose cable, 5 minute fix but took a few days to get someone in to check it. Request GE rep, not contractor rep for any service you might have if they're available in your area. You'll want to clean the lint filter after every load or two at max, it can be a bit dusty and leave some lint behind in the slot. Some lint seems to bypass the filter into the condenser fins. Some moisture can be left in the duct prior to the condenser/filter so I'd recommend keeping the door open to allow things to dry. Clean the filter pump at least every week, you'd be shocked what ends up in there. Keep short flat head screwdriver handy as the panel doesn't pop off easily (it doesn't seem to scratch easily too which is nice so far). If you do not have the pedestal you'll want a flat tray to drain into which can be tricky if you have a drainpan. Consider the riser if you have a drainpan but understand the potential issues of mounting it (KEEP THE SHIPPING BOLTS IN WHEN MOUNTING (Lay on back)!) and getting a 302 lb washer in place without damaging said riser... Overall I'm happy to not have to change wash to dryer, and the notifications are handy. I too had a sock get trapped in the front lip as she did, also had a towel that got so smashed against the drum that it didn't release from the spin cycle. I gave it 30 min to come loose before I paused and released it manually. Spin cycle can seem to go on for an eternity, not sure if this is just an efficiency requirement or something they're doing to get as much water out as possible but I didn't recall our last front loader spinning as long as this one does (Not really an issue, just an observation/curiosity). I do have concerns about the condenser fins getting dirty to the point of losing efficiency and increasing dry times so am trying to clean them as carefully as possible and may look into adding some 1mm foam to try to stop some of the bypass I'm seeing at the front-top of the filter. I'd give it a cautious recommendation.

Hello great video, I worked at GE way back in time, when they made the machines in Louisville, Ky. I was in the Automation Group so i saw all the processes from coils of metal and pellets of plastic to completed Machines. This review was outstanding in that you actually dug into it with tools and exposed major assembles, Great video. I appreciated everything you covered as well. I was nervous about combo units where in our current Sears model water will sit in the bottom of the washer and smell awful. and the door seal will show black mold in the creases. I have had both units rebuilt once, and the drier had a power cable break a solder joint, which i found the repair on You Tube and fixed myself with heavier gauge wire. I would not want to into a heat pump. But as you point out to swap the unit is a much easier repair although the heat pump unit cost, could be nearly half the price of a new unit. You know how spare parts cost. Thank You so much for really giving us the full picture. We are older 75 and do 4 to 6 loads a weeks, I think the we can handle the dry time and would love the lower energy use. What does the LG use for heat. I thought it was a heat pump also?? We are a GE House out of habit. Just like we buy Volvos. The car is safe and we know it. GE was always well designed but made in China is so poor. LG made in South Korea??? Or China as well.Thank You again, Also the old saying at GE we could always get 10 - 20% more for price because of the Meatball AKA GE Logo. Brand Name carried us up the price scale. But times have changed. Later, Dennis

So update: we bought the machine and have been using it for just about a month now. There are things that are great about it, like not having to switch clothes over, and I now have so much extra useful space in the laundry room, and no more dryer vent cleaning ever, and it freed up an entire circuit so I can now use that 240v outlet to boost my water heater, but there are things that are absolutely awful about this machine. I gave it a fair chance and was fully willing to find a new process and routine for doing laundry and rethink my old ways, and I fully understand that there are some households where this thing is a lifesaver, but I'm pretty sure it's only households where it's mostly kids' cottons going through this and where it's mostly a busy mom doing the laundry of 4-6 ppl. Most of my clothes are a mix between knits which can't be dried and office blouses that need the full heat of a regular dryer in order to dewrinkle. I never ironed clothes with a regular dryer and this machine simply cannot get wrinkles out. The heat pump does not produce enough heat, but that's not the primary issue: the tumble feature actually stops mid-tumble and let's the clothes simply sit there wet every few seconds. That's what sets all the wrinkles in. I think it does that stop when it's sucking the water out. Other issue - i used to gradually take my blouses out one by one - like I'd go in, grab one or two, and while I'm putting them straight onto hangers, I'd hit the start button to continue heating and tumbling the rest. This machine makes that process impossible: 1, there's the interface which forces you to have to press 3 different buttons to get a cycle started so it takes too long, 2, there's the fact that when you start the dry cycle, it doesn't just start tumbling and heating, instead it does like a sucking-emptying the water thing for about 30 seconds, so the clothes are just sitting there being wrinkled and by the time I'm ready to grab another 2 blouses, the machine hasn't started tumbling yet, and then 3- the door locks when you press start and it takes like 2 or 3 seconds to unlock it, which delays everything further. I've used the wrinkle care feature- useless because it also does this tumble-then-stop letting the wrinkles set in, and the software is really unfortunate in that you can't restart wrinkle care once you've opened the door so no way to take a blouse out then continue tumbling the rest. I've also used the dewrinkle feature- it's the worst. First of all, the machine WETS the clothes at the start of the dewrinkle cycle. At first I thought oh that's smart because the steam will get the wrinkles out even better, but it actually doesn't effectively dewrinkle my clothes and that wetting feature also means it's not possible to use that cycle to help you get clothes out gradually. Your clothes just end up fully wet again, and at the end of the dewrinkle cycle which takes at least 30 minutes, stuff is still wrinkled (because as above, there's not enough heat and not constant tumbling going on) and you end up ironing. I'm sure that this door-lock-delay and not-tumbling-constantly might be an issue with other newer separate dryers though since I do understand most new dryers have that door lock and some pretty fancy features, but I've used the LG ThinQ which has the door lock and I had no issues with wrinkles.. And I don't remember the door lock on that dryer being a problem. Another thing that I really really hate about this is that at the end of every single cycle, whether you've washed or dried or washed and dried, as soon as I open the door, a stream of water flows from the top of the circular drum down into the drain and that stream ALWAYS soaks whatever clothing is right there at the front. I have no real issues with the machine taking too long because you can configure every cycle to your preference and I just set all the settings to the shortest time. I don't have kids or soccer dirty clothes so I have nothing going in here that needs heavy washing. A huge time waste with this machine is that you can't do simultaneous loads, and about half the loads I've done are soaking wet at the end of the dry cycle- like bunched up together and literally soaking wet, so I've stopped using the dry sensor altogether and only ever use the timed dry- always set to a full hour just to be sure- which probably counters some of the supposed cost-savings of this machine. Another thing- they boast that it's smart and has an app, but currently, the app is pretty useless. The only thing it does is notify you when the cycle is complete. You can't actually control any feature of the machine with the app- it's an info-only app. The machine also has this button that says downloaded cycle, and apparently there are a number of useful cycles you can download, but you can only download ONE at a time and if you want to use a different downloaded cycle, you must download that new one and you lose the old one. This machine is for some.. not for all. Know what kind of laundry you do and don't make the mistake I did. We bought it from home Depot when it went on sale for 2400 but because of the sale price, it was NO RETURN. Now I'm stuck with it. I'm pretty sure though that I'll cut my losses and buy regular side by side separate washer dryer soon. Or maybe I'll have to buy one of those fancy hanging steam chambers to dewrinkle my clothes.. I now have the space for it so maybe that's the way to go.. Because I am NOT ironing.

I appreciate you sharing your experience! I will say, I do my husbands dress shirts for work, as well as various dresses and dress clothes for myself. For my husbands dressy work clothes, I set them to the regular wash with the wrinkle care option, and wash them alone. I don’t toss them in with other clothes. When they are done, I allow the wrinkle care to go a bit longer before opening the door. This seems to prevent the water soaking whatever is close when the door opens. Also, the app features are definitely limited, but you can make a few changes, like changing your wrinkle care selection, adding more water, or changing to the more dry setting. I do wish you could turn the wrinkle care back on, but to get around this, I would suggest starting a new dry cycle, or just pausing it during the time when it’s sensing the load. When you pause, and play again, you don’t have the time attributed to starting a new load cycle. All of that said, no product is right for 100% of us! I’m sure you would be able to sell it easily if you decide to go that route. Our other option was the Speed Queen set, as it is commercial grade, and shown to last 25 years or more. Good luck with your search, and thank you again for adding your experience to this thread. I often find that the comments are invaluable to others.

I've also played with various settings-- example setting the spin to low medium and high-- none seem to make any difference. I've stopped putting in anything other than half a load at a time, and half the loads finish their cycles completely soaking wet. Yesterday I threw in 2 full size towels+ 2 hand towels and used the preset towel function (3 hours 10 minutes). All the towels did what clothes normally do in this machine: they stick to the drum like the centrifugal force sticks them as they're spinning, so all 4 towels were completely soaking wet at the end of the dry cycle. Had to hang them to dry and of course the towels are stiff and hard to touch now. No fluffy softness like with a regular dryer. I've informed my husband that as soon as we can, this machine is going and we are replacing it with a traditional separate washer and dryer

I have this too, and I feel like it has changed my life. I am not joking. No more laundry sitting in the washer. I get that some families have a person who's home all the time to do laundry all the time. Thats not how our family works and this is so much easier...throw it and come back when you're done with work. Throw it in before bed, on a delay, and it's all done in the morning. Game Changer!

I need to reach out to another fellow profile user. We recently purchased this unit and loved it! Well... yesterday I washed some sour towels that were in the original washer that stopped working and now the new washer smells that same way, like big foots you know what... I've washed them on sanitize with bleach same thing. When the washer/ dry phase ends, I open the door and get a blast of hot sour smell. I've washed the black filter and re washed the towels again, same thing. Once the machine cold down the smell goes away but dang I'm at a loss here.

Bought this for my dog blankets (3-5 very hairy loads a day) Love not having to change it over, and the app for notifications or advanced settings. I chose this machine mainly for the easy access lint and drain filters which are a must with dog bedding. Only dislike is my fluffy dog blankets and towels are more damp than I want to stuff in a basket until use even when set on extra dry. I usually end up running a extra dry cycle obce the wash/dry cycle is complete. For last load of the day I turn on wrinkle guard, which basically does tumble dry off and on thru the night, so that gives the extra dryness needed. FYI, this machine is VERY HEAVY to manuver you will need two strong people to get it in position. The lanky guys that delivered couldn't even pick it up.
@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead 9 ай бұрын
It’s VERY heavy! 🥴 My husband and I installed it, and it was quite a feat! For blankets I have great luck with them as long as they are the same fabric. If they’re mixed, I usually have to hang them for just a bit after, or run the 2nd dry.
@alayne74ify
@alayne74ify 8 ай бұрын
For bulky bedding I've used the timed dry (I set it for the maximum time and use the wrinkles care) and they come out completely dry. I'll even start the load before bed without a delay and it's still tumbling for the wrinkle care in the morning, so I don't care that it adds an extra hour.

Based on additional videos that I have seen on this product you may be in danger of moisture and gunk getting trapped in heat pump and drain area within time by other accounts by owners. My Maytag front load washer had countless in warranty electrical repairs to the motherboard. I finally got it under control by eliminating all liquid detergent just using pods and mainly cold water washes which may be something you may want experiment with should the performance start to degrade as other owners have gave testimony to on this product. Just something to consider. Thanks again on your great report.

One thing to note - the cycles aren't a little longer, they're double. A gas dryer and normal impeller washer can do a full load in < an hour. This can be 2-4 hours 4 being if you want very dry full load of wash. That being said, this system is far superior to most dual electric systems It's a great product and I bet this will be the way in the US in future

I'm 70 yo and it's getting hard carrying laundry up and down stairs to the basement. We're looking at this because it doesn't need venting or 220 electrical. Does it shrink as much as a regular dryer. Seems like it's way better for the environment as well. So worth the up front cost for me.

@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead 10 ай бұрын
Use the Wrinkle Control option to help take out the last of the humidity, and also use the more dry feature if you don’t feel like stuff is dry enough. Lastly, make sure your setting it up for a cycle that dries completely. Some of the cycles don’t seem to dry as well, like the athletic wear. I assume that’s to protect certain types of clothing, No smell issues here, but perhaps run the self clean cycle and see if you can get it taken care of. Thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any additional questions!

Interested to see long term performance and reliability. Typically, all in one washer/dryer combos are notoriously unreliable and break down fast. Will be nice to see if it lasts a long time. Ohhh...you may rightly assume that *this machine will be going to the local dump within (maximum) eight or so years.* And this is no particular slam against G.E. or this specific model. It is simply a virtual guarantee from modern appliance companies based on the demonstrated lack of longevity of almost every washer, fridge, etcetera of the last ten years or so (in particular). You'll notice the reviewer said there is only a one year warantee on 'everything'. That includes the incredibly shoddily designed electronic components. These are typically the first to break, and they break irrevocably with the manufacturers stocking no spare parts past ~five years (ask me how I know). And, for the few years they do stock the parts, the prices of new electronic circuit boards are astronomical---think half the cost of a new machine (or higher $). I'll add that apparently this *_"We Build 'em to Break!"_* policy of manufacturers building appliances for North America doesn't _seem_ to apply to European appliances. You mentioned these washer/dryer combos breaking down sooner than separate types. I think this may also apply to lucky us here in N.America.

The true test for these machines is longvity and teenagers. I work at an appliance parts store and we get to talk with all the service techs. Just like any product, nothing is perfect for every family. If you like to do regular maintenance on your washer, then this combo might be worth considering. This combo unit will require meticulous care and upkeep. The drain pump needs to be cleaned just like any other frontload washer and the detergent dispenser will need to be cleaned regularly. I don't trust loading the dispenser tray full as there will eventually be some clogging in there especially scince many laundry areas are not in the best climate controlled areas. Basements can be brutal on the cheap metal and other components. I have been rebuilding washers and dryers for over 12 years including service on coin operated washers and dryers. The problem with any washer and dryer is overloading. I try to give as many tips as possible to people when I am installing their units. If anyone out here could at least follow simple rules of no shoes, rugs or comforters in their washer or dryer, they would last alot longer. Take those items to the laundromat where the machines were built to handle those loads. People need to stop washing 15 pairs of jeans in one load as well. Also, you dont need to wash every towel you own in one load. I am pretty sure there are not too many service techs that are looking forward to working on these units. I hope many updates are posted on this, because most of the comments are from people who just got them. There are plenty of people that thought their shiny Samsungs and LG machines were the best thing they've ever had. Then after a few months, or a few service calls, they realized they were duped. GE sold out to Haier because of years of bad designs using cheap parts. I fear this could continue with this unit, but I hope to be proved wrong. Nothing will ever beat a classic direct drive Whirlpool washer and a basic dryer. Except Speed Queen. She's my girl. Wash on 🤘

I love your feedback! I actually will buy Speed Queens if this beauty ever lefts me down, without a second thought! That said, with 5 kids at home, if I can’t wash shoes, comforters and such, then I’m out! 😬 I’d rather replace my unit that hit the laundry mat that often. Family use isn’t light use, but so far so good. We have had ours for 4 months, and still loving it. I’m planning a 6 month update with some tricks that we’ve learned along the way. Thank you for watching, and adding such valuable feedback! Merry Christmas!

I quit Smart Dispense for my Puracy. It takes one small pump, not much over a tablespoon for one load. I’d rather just pump it than change to something that I don’t like. If I were to change, I’d use the list of detergents that you can pick from on the app. Those have preset amounts in the system.

@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead 11 ай бұрын
What’s special about the delay is that it allows you to avoid wrinkles. Setting the delay on the washer/dryer allows clothes to be COMPLETE versus wet when you wake from a delayed washer. This is not just delaying the wash, but advancing the entire process to finish when you wake. Thanks for watching!

@miryum_
@miryum_ 9 ай бұрын

I was interested in one of these but reading this review, I think I'll stick to tried and true machines. I don't need the lastest and not trying to impress anyone (not that anyone here is), so I will just buy a replacement of what I currently have and have loved for years. It is a beautiful machine though, maybe once its been out for a while amd they get the bugs out. Seems like all new appliances, are so tech smart but they don't last or work nearly as well. Thank you for this review as well.

We are also a family of 7, and we are military. We read that the load capacity is not as big as a standard washer and dryer set. Is that true? Do y’all still like the machine? Would you ever go back to standard stand alone?
@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead 10 ай бұрын
We would never go back, still like it for sure. The load capacity is much larger than the Speed Queens that we were looking at, which was the final push to send us this way. It handles a large load with no issues. This week we washed full bedding (including comforters and extra blankets) for 5 beds. The only issue is that it has a hard time drying the fleece style blankets. I put it back in alone, and it was probably 75% dry when I just hung it for the rest of the night. That said, no issues at all with our family using it. I DO stick with 1 load a day minimum though. We don’t get behind. If you needed to run 6 loads in a day, you might not enjoy it as much as we do. That said, staying on top of it makes this a non issue, and is my goal.

WOW! Excellent, excellent review! Love how detailed you were, and getting into the process of what you have to do if you want to use the delay start feature. With that said, and I know you mentioned "User Interface", it makes me wonder if when you get future downloads from GE, if it will be possible for them to make the programming process for delay start.. to be much quicker and user friendly. Maybe if enough people contact GE, and suggest to them to make the delay setup easier and faster way, possibly they will make that happen.... because I can see myself using that "delay feature" alot. The fact you are using this unit for 7 people... WOW... that's amazing too. So, there are only two total in my household, so .... and to be honest, the most loads I ever do in one week, is only 2.
