The price has clearly crashed on those things. The Leica Distomatic units had a cripplingly high price tag. When the Stanley ones became affordable I bought one from the USA and between it and the DeWalt laser plumb it saved me a LOT of work in hanging track and bars in theatres and studios.

Great review. Thank you for testing the accuracy of the device. I'm always skeptical of datasheets.

Crazy things. I own one but a much older model which was extremely handy when doing construction work in the house. I wonder how they actually work, any chance of opening it up?
@macro8209 жыл бұрын
+Luc Peeters They usually detect the phase shift of the laser beam sent vs returned
@JuliansShorts9 жыл бұрын
+Luc Peeters Yeah, I'm quite keen to open this thing up, although whether it'll be obvious from the inside how it works remains to be seen. There's a Sparkfun blog entry (www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/323) all about trying to hack one of these things which is worth a read.

+Preproto The accuracy should ideally be limited with the wavelength of laser light - like an interferometer.

I tried to use one of these for archery. In broad daylight, these cheapies are only reliable up to abt 30m no matter what the box says. Coz after 30m, the laser dot just disappears despite you paying extra for the 80m or 100m model. If you cannot see the dot, then you don't know where you're aiming & it won't give you a proper reading. Also, don't expect high precision measurement at their price. If you must have it, save money & buy the cheaper 40m ones. For anything >30m in daylight, buy a cheap Chinese golf/hunting laser rangefinder instead.

Thanks for the video. The more important thing no one says is. When you select the english system scale (feet and inches) does it show the in between inches divided x 10 ( that is not really useful) or one 32 and one 16 and so? like on a real tape

It's fun but with an error rate of potentially 4mm it is just a toy unless you just don't care about getting things right.
@GRBtutorials5 жыл бұрын
Well, 4 mm is still impressive for the range of this thing, and in most cases when you're dealing with that kind of distances, you don't care much about that. For example, if I'm measuring a room or building, I don't care if it's 8.976 m^2, 9 m^2 or 9.024 m^2 (yes, I calculated the error).

Strange how these laser measures never seem to have any good and straight edges. Always rounded/curved edges and corners or something else weird. They also seem to lack any good live measurment function.

Much appreciated for posting this video especially that the manufacturer never bother to post a tutorial. What I can't figure out even after reading the mini catalogue is how to calibrate it. Instructions are not clear. My device is off by about 14 centimeters per meter, which is annoying. I thought calibrating it may be a fixer, but would really appreciate your feedback if you have figured out how to do this. Cheers

Yep, one of the most useful things when doing the "bigger" things around the house. But Murphy is strong in this one! ;) Have you tried what the minimum distance it can measure is? Because for me that is the most annoying thing. You run around and measure whole rooms and gardens, but then you come to something that's less than 35cm (for the one I have) and you will get an error. And of course at that time you've completely forgotten where you last left the real tape measure. It also won't work on reflective surfaces, like aluminium or other polished metals or glass. Sometimes it will measure a single blade of grass that you can't even see three times in a row. You will also inadvertently make measurements with the wrong "end" setting and only become aware of it when you trying to sketch a model. ;) About the brain fry: I find that funny. Just to test the device I measured a few points on a large crane, which was on a plot a few neighbours over (measurements up to 65m; works better in the evening/dark of course so you can tell you hit the crane and don't blind the driver up there because he's finished work already ;) ). A little bit of trigonometry (by pen and paper, no automatic rubbish ;) ) and you know how far away, how high and how long the boom of the crane is without leaving your own terrace.

garbage if you can't calibrate it .... 4mm on 100cm is "incredibly accurate" NOT ... for rough measuring it might be sufficient .. but for PROs and people who like and need precision , on short distances , this is not the right tool ... the price is right I guess :)

on 100cm distance few mm is unacceptable error.

Very sad you tested up to 30 meters only. The device schould be able to measure up to 80 meters and you didnt even get close to that distance. Since it is no problem measuring short distances with ordinary equipment this device will be bought by people who need to measure longer distances. Would be nice if you could test also longer distances. It's like having a ferrari test and all you test is the speed you're allowed in town. That would make no sense because a ferrari is all about high speed. Same with this device...
@JuliansShorts9 жыл бұрын
+Mirko Mueller Unless you have a handy aircraft hanger available, it's difficult to measure very long distances. Indoors I don't have the space, and outside it's quite hard to see the laser dot. Outdoors at night is a possibility, but you have to make sure not to shine the laser into people's eyes.
@lordkered8 жыл бұрын
Someone needs to tell him the laser is only a visual guide. Its the ultrasonic that gives the distance.
