While I do agree Vox Machina did rush into this a bit (they just beat four dragons, so I imagine they were feeling pretty invincible), people are overlooking a key fact about this fight; This was their first big fight without Scanlan. He was their de facto healer. They are now made almost entirely out of offensive characters. Cutting Words on those bite attacks, Dimension Door to get out of a grapple, Healing Word would literally have saved Vax and Inspiration on three Investigation checks could have let them bypass this entirely. Taryon is a fine character, but Vox Machina will need to rethink how they fight without Scanlan and they only realised this in a fight with a kraken. This would have been a different fight if they fought someone else first.
@kcgotfre7 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I was thinking this the entire time, surprised more people hadn't mentioned it in the comments. Healing from a distance would have been a HUGE advantage in this fight. They've been going 2 years with that advantage and are used to playing with that level of risk. Scanlan kept them together in a lot of ways - I'm really loving Tary so far, but it makes me sad to see how much they struggle without Scanlan :(

I'd be curious to see how much time they spend devising actual plans and using strategy when they aren't crunched on time because they're live streaming and want to keep it entertaining to the audience, while also having a team around them who apparently can't go home until their session ends. Sometimes, even after midnight. Plus, they kind of have to contend with a player like Travis, who rushes them along because he's impatient and gets bored quickly. He's the biggest "murder hobo" at the table and doesn't want to use tactics. This fight is probably boring mostly to him because he has to play passively. I think the rest of the group was more interested in a stealth mission for once. It's just hard for them to do that with Grog's penchant for action and suspense mirroring the man who is playing him. To that point, I just don't think this was a great idea for a challenge. You could see Travis wanting to go home. The narrative almost has to be tailored to him and his playstyle because you can also witness Laura expressing concern for him in whispered voices and asking him if he's OK as she has had to do numerous times in their previous sessions.
@gabrielcruz40715 ай бұрын
@@WigglyBro SOMEONE needs to rush them along. If left to their own devices they'd quibble and piss and moan until the crew were unconscious. Couple that with Keyleth/Marisha constantly bellowing "WE DON'T HAVE A PLAN!!!" while they're literally in the process of making one. There's just no order to the group, and it makes a lot of the big fights such slogs.
@masonlake6353 ай бұрын
Travis has ADHD. His brain literally won't allow him to sit there doing nothing for an hour plus sometimes while the rest of the party plans, argues about the plan, goes back to the first plan, and then maybe has 12.5 percent of a plan. Especially as he roleplays a character with 6 intelligence who rarely has a meaningful contribution to anything tactical. Listening to Travis OOC, or when he allows Grog to have an uncharacteristically intelligent stroke of genius, the man is actually tactically brilliant. Laura checks in with him at times because it's really easy for someone like Travis to become disregulated when they aren't actively engaged with something.

VM were screwed more by the environmental circumistances than the Kraken itself to be honest. That, and fighting it in its lair. Had they not been at disadvantage all the time and Percy essentially useless, they would have obliterated it. As for comparing it to the dragons, Matt modified the Chroma Conclave pretty extensively: Raishan would be at least CR27 if we're going strictly by the Monster Manual, due to being able to cast Meteor Swarm (lvl 9 spell, and it says the spell levels of dragon spellcasters can be no higher than 1/3 of its challenge rating), Horrid Wilting, Prismatic Spray etc. The standard Ancient Green Dragon statblock also only puts it at 385 hp, whereas Raishan had 520.

I was reading some spell descriptions today and realized something. Freedom of movement would have been absolutely amazing in this situation. It counters the attack disadvantage, the movement penalty, and makes escaping the Kraken's grapple effortless. It also isn't concentration, so they could all have it on them the whole fight. @@guilhudo Remembering this clip back I remember that all the cast members were drunk and behaving like idiots. This was an awesome fight that ground to a halt because they were too drunk to make choices. The M-FING DRUID forgot she could wildshape into something super useful, they kept changing their mind as to what they wanted to be and wanted to summon. Yes the DM can look up monsters on the fly, but the players could also give a headsup to the DM too. Did you watch this episode? Did you see how it ground to a screeching halt while the players diddled around. And that is with a master DM like Mercer running the show. Imagine a less experienced DM trying to deal with this madness. Honestly, I don't even know why you responded to a 10 month old YT comment or why I am replying to you, but your answer lacks empathy for both the DMs workload and the audience who this content was meant for. They are all good friends and this was AGES ago so who really cares, but my opinion is that a druid needs to understand what creatures they are probably going to turn into and use, and considering they all knew what they were fighting and the terrain this was just another example of the druid not being prepared with their complicated kit. Still the best D&D campaign I've ever watched, super fun actors and great people. But this fight was hard to watch.

I know I'm way to late, but if you want a low level group face a kraken, then don't send them after it as a group but have the kraken attack when they are travelling on a bigger ship that has a crew and cannons/ballista, so they don't have to take it down all by themselves, but just have to help defend the ship against it. During the battle, you can scare the shit out of them by doing "random" roles to determine where the kraken places his attacks and have him swallow some NPCs and do damage to the ship. With a level 5 group, you'd probably want to fudge those roles though to avoid hitting a PC who doesn't have an easy way to escape from a grapple.

Freedom of Movement.The kraken ignores difficult terrain, and magical effects can't reduce its speed or cause it to be restrained. If the target is a Large or smaller creature grappled by the kraken, that creature is swallowed, and the grapple ends. While swallowed, the creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the kraken, and it takes 42 (12d6) acid damage at the start of each of the kraken's turns. If the kraken takes 50 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the kraken must succeed on a DC 25 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the kraken. One Large or smaller object held or creature grappled by the kraken is thrown up to 60 feet in a random direction and knocked prone. If a thrown target strikes a solid surface, the target takes 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it was thrown. If the target is thrown at another creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take the same damage and be knocked prone. Lightning Storm. The kraken magically creates three bolts of lightning, each of which can strike a target the kraken can see within 120 feet of it. A target must make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Legendary Actions The kraken can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The kraken regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn. Tentacle Attack or Fling.The kraken makes one tentacle attack or uses its Fling. Lightning Storm .The kraken uses Lightning Storm. Ink Cloud .While underwater, the kraken expels an ink cloud in a 60-foot radius. The cloud spreads around corners, and that area is heavily obscured to creatures other than the kraken. Each creature other than the kraken that ends its turn there must succeed on a DC 23 Constitution saving throw, taking 16 (3d10) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A strong current disperses the cloud, which otherwise disappears at the end of the kraken's next turn.
