I hated my replay of it last year. The story is the only thing it has going for it. The level design is the worst in the whole series and the gameplay is uninspired and boring. It's not as bad as Sticker Star but close in my opinion.

Bricks My Mario RPG tierlist is probably 11. Paper Mario: Sticker Star (singlehandedly murdered a series that immediately before was giving me my favorite games of all time) 10. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (most insulting crossover ever, and it had to be between my two favorite subseries of all time) 9. Paper Mario: Color Splash (Fixes some things from Sticker Star but makes some worse) (i also didn't finish this one but i played and watched enough to have a good idea of where I'd place it) 8. Paper Mario: The Origami King (best modern PM by far, sadly restrictions are still very felt and everything it does well is despite them. Restrictions need to die if they ever hope to beat any of the first 3 again) 7. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (some fun characters, including a pinch of FAWFUL) 6. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (satisfyingly long, many beloved returning characters, Antasma is cool) 5. Paper Mario (Set a solid foundation for the PM series, lots of wonderful characters) 3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story (tie) (FAWFUL) (also Cackletta, Prince Peasley, Popple, Midbus, Dark Bowser, i can't put one of these above the other because I consider them two parts to one story, with Fawful being the primary link) 2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (best battle system, worldbuilding and audiovisual style, fantastic chapter stories and partners, basically set the standard for what future games should have built on) 1. Super Paper Mario (best story and villains, delightfully dire stakes as well as keeping 99% of TTYD's sound direction & visual appeal imo. Truly an epic of a Mario game. Also zany and bizarre and self aware in all the right ways, aka not constantly screaming the word PAPER in your face and expecting laughter. Did not mind the gameplay shift in this one at all. Sad that it was the last hurrah for the Paper Mario series I fell in love with) I haven't played the Mario + Rabbids games yet, and I have only played the beginning of Super Mario RPG (the upcoming remake is likely where I'll play the full game for the first time)

It was a fine game, and I did have fun playing it, but when it's a crossover of such epic proportions, being (just fine) isn't enough. Where were the unique characters and designs from both games? Why did you shelve Paper Luigi? Where are the badges? Why didn't you involve any of the unique villains? You could have brought Dimentio and Fawful back for a team up, just do something like make it Paper Fawful and 3d Dimentio or something.

I’ve only played a few of them (I fell off after Super Paper Mario). I’d rank them like so: 1) Paper Mario TTYD 2) Mario RPG (#1 in my heart, though) 3) Paper Mario 64 4) Superstar Saga 5) Super Paper Mario (underrated af) 6) Partners in Time All of these games are at least good, if not great. I do want to try out Bowser’s Inside Story eventually, but it seems I haven’t missed out on much otherwise. Sad to see the state of things for so long, but Mario RPG remake has me more hyped than I’ve been in years.

I mean, in Super Paper Mario, they *actually* go in depth to Count Bleck's character. Tell me; just how often did the Mario RPGs *ever* make their villains interesting? Like, almost all of them never really had an interesting to explain their motivations and are just evil for the sake of being evil. Of course, I can agree that getting rid of turn-based combat was a very risky move on Nintendo's part. Super Paper Mario was still both my first Paper Mario game AND first action-based RPG.

We are meant to take him seriously and he just decides to erase everything over a girl. To be perfectly honest, Smithy had like 10 minutes of screentime in SMRPG yet he left much bigger impact because how menacing he is and how hard his fight was.

Sure, the game's got some humorous moments at times but that's about all Origami King has going for it. The combat also likes to drag itself on for no good reason and starts feeling stale eventually. Super Paper Mario's theme is more than just about love - it's about caring for one another as well, and the Pure Hearts display that form of care when shown in that scene of Tippi being glad to be saved by Mario and his friends, Squirp remembering his mother, the Floro Sapiens and King Croacans in their desire for clean water to keep species alive, or Luvbi revealing that she still felt that her fake parents felt like real family to her before saying goodbye to them and transforming into the final Pure Heart. All of that is connected by the Pure Hearts themselves.

@@batty_tsukimiya I mean, TTYD had some pretty annoying backtracking and side quests in its own right. And the same could be said for Origami King. While collections could be fun, there are lots of things in the game that the game just outright doesn't tell the player which make the rest of the experience of the game feel like an unfun chore. As for Olly, ironically enough, his hatred against toads pretty much accurately represents the fanbase right now. In Japapnese culture, it's considered offensive to even draw a dot on origami, and the game just outright refuses to tell the player. The ending just feels rushed and it kind of seems like the developers wrote themselves into a corner as far as Olly's motivations went, so it just falls flat. There's lots of things that just don't make sense in Origami King and even Olivia's sacrifice felt forced in a way. On the topic of Smithy from SMRPG again, he does mention "revenge" before the second phase of the fight with him, but the game doesn't bother to explain said revenge. What's the point of him saying that in the first place? Just like Origami King, it feels forced and afterthought for the entire story in the first place.

On a first time playthrough it’s pretty great but man does the pacing take a massive hit when playing it multiple times.

I have lots of nostalgia for dream team, but man I have to agree. Tried replaying it a few months ago, but quit after about 8 hours in because of how bad the pacing is. Characters never shut up, endless unskippable tutorials, long loading times between battle transitions, and bros attacks are way too long with shoe-horned in motion controls for how often you need to use them. Not to mention, the real world / dream world mechanic gets way too visually repetitive for my liking. I hate this game now but the music is still nice. Thankyou for listening to my TED talk.

Something obscure I loved about Super Paper Mario is at the very beginning you get to choose if you want to go on the adventure. If you say no, you get two other chances to say yes. If you keep saying no, the game ends. You haven’t reached a save point so you have to watch the opening cutscene again.

I understand Super Paper Mario pretty much ditched the RPG's style and a lot of people were mad about it... but i still absolutely loved it. The story is by far the most complex and wild in the entire Mario franchise, has the most unique villains, even for the Wii the graphics were nice to look at, and the main cast had a lot of personality (Peach especially) i really wish they would make a sequel and i dont see why not; its STILL the number 1 best selling Paper Mario game

A few more things in Super Mario RPG their are hidden bosses as well as a hidden Final Fantasy boss in the game which is a bit surprising when you think on it. Also you know you can also do interesting things that isn't puzzle base and such like put mario into dept in it and force him to work as a bellhop and on occasion you can get tips from the guests. Their is a surprising amount of hidden things in that game when you start looking you eventually have to scour everything to find the unique stuff and hidden stuff some of the hidden stuff have a surprising amount of context like the gambling hall.

You need to fix your title, you have 14 different games in your video and you mention 13 in your title. Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King should actually fall below Mario and Luigi. Since you're rating them as RPG games. That actually would be 50% of their grade and shouldn't fall above Mario and Luigi games. Personally the top 4 Mario RPGs will always be 1. Super Mario RPG (There is no Mario RPG that is better than this, it's 100% the best) 2. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door (The best Paper Mario game in the series) 3. Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga (I can't find anything beating this in the Mario and Luigi series) and 4. Paper Mario (Being the first Paper Mario game in the series, it should have been the staple in the series.) If I had to place a 5, it would have to be Mario and Luigi: Partner's in Time. It used more of the DS's ability and one of the best Mario and Luigi game on the DS. These are my thoughts, but the first 4 you can find a lot of people that can agree with these top 4 games. Super Mario RPG is literally the RPG game that helped the RPG Genre, without Super Mario RPG, RPGs as a video game would have died. To rate any other Mario RPG over Super Mario RPG would be very wrong. Also the SNES port is not on the Switch Online, and has never been on the Switch online

I know it’s not a good game, but I can’t bring myself to even dislike Sticker Star. It was one of the games that introduced me to the 3DS. Before I had a 3DS, my friend would bring his to school and the two games he played the most were Ocarina of Time 3D and Sticker Star. I remember being amazed by the graphics of OoT3D and the aesthetic of Sticker Star, especially since I hadn’t heard of the other Paper Mario games yet. Sticker Star was one of the first 3DS games I bought after getting the system and I really enjoyed completing the sticker collection at the time. It’s probably still at the bottom of the list for me-maybe just above Color Splash-but I still appreciate it as a charming 3DS game.

I somewhat agree. I may dispise that game, but I will cut it some slack. Nintendo wanted to try something new, and last time they did that, we got Super Paper Mario, my favorite of the PM series. That's actually why I hate Color Splash even more. They saw how they screwed up Sticker Star and, rather than just go back to the traditional formula, or even another style entirely like what we see in Oragami King, they pulled the SAME CRAP, with even more limited ammo and boring stakes. Sticker Star may have been the first PM game I played (unless you count Paper Jam), but as they say, first is the worst.

I still wish Wart was in Dream Team. I know his first appearance wasn’t really a Mario game but he did show up in the dream of a magic fish once so he is canon to Nintendo proper.
