Hi All!...Our new project will be using a Dollar Store Book and altering it using Gelli Printing and Collage to create a beautiful and unique "Book As Art" piece! We'll do this project over the next several months, I'll share many of my techniques from more than 30 years of bookbinding both professionally, teaching at the Corcoran School of Art and the Smithsonian as well as exhibiting my works in many collections and exhibitions.
The Altered book has been there from the beginning of the Book Arts movement and remains an impressive structure to use for painting, printmaking an collage. Will you join me, in lots of Creative Fun?

And believe me you don't want to know the things that have been said to me that are utterly horrible and I've over looked and deleted the comment never uttering a word....lol. What really gets me is when you get the occasional person that leaves these insults under other peoples comments, to try to spur them into agreement that's when it goes too far...lol Thanks so much for hanging out with me a being apart of this amazing community! xoxo

Good tips. I like to tear out 3 pages then skip 2. I also use YES! Paste to glue pages for super sturdy pages. Also, there is less wrinkling of paper. I learned about YES! Paste from a wedding scrapbooker. I like to use math text books for the text, numbers, and graphics.

This is excellent, Robyn. So clear. I've never seen any instructions on this before. I am already working through a book my hubby bought for me, which has palm leaves, corn husks and bark on the cover (I call it my Organic Journal) and hand-made paper pages. I've been removing one page and glueing the previous and subsequent page over the torn out part, and doing it from the front as I go. I've only done a few spreads so far and already the thing is distorting... I'm going to stop what I'm doing and follow your insructions from now on in, lol! (I wish I'd seen this video before I started...) Also, I've glued the page across its entirety rather than just at the edges. They don't seem to be buckling. I did them with PVA. The hand-made paper is fairly thin and very absorbent, so I've painted the pages with either clear gesso or acrylic polymer and have had no bleed-through. I started watching this playlist with the video on matt acrylic and spray inks and just loved that one - also the glimpses of the other pages you'd already done, so I knew I had to watch the whole thing from the start! I am so looking forward to following through with this. So much to learn and enjoy. I am relatively new to gel printing and am addicted already!

Not sure how I landed here (since I was looking for soldering videos) but I’m glad I did! Love the concept of the altered book as art, not a journal. Hi Susan, I enjoyed our time! I have a little white Bichon is that your dogs breed? I was noticing your pic, such a cutie! Yes, I need to know where I'm going so I try to teach that same way! xoxo

Robyn McClendon my Bichon boy is going on 14 and still plays like a puppy. I named him Marcello (pronounced Marchello with a distinct Italian accent but my husband just started calling him Fluffy and it stuck. Fluffy?! Can you believe it?) I did hear you refer to Aston, I think. I meant to mention it but forgot.

@@susanmyrick2913 Oh Wow, my Bichon is boy also and is going on 13 himself, still jumping around on his hind legs and sprinting, though he does stop and rest longer than he used to...lol but they are the best aren't they? So loyal and loving! Yes his name is Aston with a distinct British accent for Aston Martin, I figured if I repeated the cars name for as much as I call him I should have manifested that Auto by now...hahahahaha xoxo

Oh man. I can't wait to get started. Thank you so much for showing how to alter the book. I started a thesaurus and didn't have a clue. Lol. It's got a hundred bpages so far. I think I better start ripping out some pages. Lol thanks again. Love the info as always. 🤗

Well, your art book project sounds fantastic! And your sound was great all the way thru. I've deconstructed books this way recently and I'm giving your method a try. I have issues with contrary pages in the past so maybe less glue (just the edges) will be the answer. I'm so glad I clicked on your gelli plate video last night so I can join in the fun collage, etc. from the first. Your printables look amazing, too. Thanks, Robyn, for the lovely gift.

I like this. I'm going to try this and see if I can turn it into a class for our home school group. I'd probably need to prep the books myself or use books with fewer pages.

I must be one of the only people in the world who can’t get to the Dollar Store 🙀 I can drive but can’t afford car insurance and I have medical mobility issues right now so I cannot walk to the bus stop. The friend who used to drive me here & there is now homeless (although she prefers “houseless”) & carless. My sister moved out of state not long ago. And so on 🤯 Nevertheless, life is wonderful, thanks in no small part to generous artists like you who share your gifts and inspiration. A million 🙏 Just saying tho: We *are* out here ;o)

Oh My Lynn...I can feel the absolute beauty of your spirit through the words you share, for all that you a dealing with there is an incredible optimism! Let me ask you a few things do you have any books in your home that you don't mind using? If so make sure that they have a glued spine, you can determine that by opening approximately 20 pages if you don't see any sewn threads in the page creases then it is glued! You don't have to use a dollar store, also this Saturday I'll be releasing some free printables to everyone, but I fear you won't be able to print them out......hhmmmmmm I tell you what, If you'd like to do this project with us. please send me your mailing address to info@robynmcclendon.com and I'll send you some happy mail so you'll have some things to create with. Also first let me know if you been able to find a book that you already own that will work. Blessings xoxo

Robyn McClendon I do have at least one book I can use but it’s called The Pain Chronicles. Not sure I want that to be the title of My book. ;o) (although it might be appropriate.)I’ll keep looking. I’ve always had plenty of books and my apt bldg has a free library if I can’t bear to tear pages from one of mine. And when my check comes Tuesday I’m hoping to buy printer cartridges. So all is well. Thanks for asking. My comment was mostly a response to the “Everybody can get to the Dollar Tree, right?” assumption, which is natural if you don’t know otherwise. ❤️🎈🎈🎈❤️

Thanks so much for starting out on this exciting new series. It’s a lovely was to store some of the prints from the gelli. Next time someone tells you you should have certain equipment perhaps you could respond “Thanks so much for your generous offer. I’m not sure whether you want to send me the xxx or assist with the purchase price.? Let me know and I’ll send you my paypal or P.O. Box info. I don’t do product sponsored reviews but I’m happy to mention a product I enjoy using” or something on those lines. Xx
