Every danger he puts himself in, it is shown that it can be his last. What makes people believe he is invincible is his professionalism and choreography, and using gun fu based off actual military techniques. All without ever breaking the feeling that John Wick is in actual danger, and reminding us that any misstep could cripple or kill him, hence why he is practical and professional in all his fights. Henry became an assassin because that is what he was good (the best even) at and it made him forget his problems. But now he is older, and his conscience is beginning to weigh on him. The "almost could have missed, and hit the girl" wasnt a "im getting old" but more a "i cant bear the risk of hurting innocent people". And the young Henry vs the old Henry felt more like young cockiness and will to show off (and impress) versus the realization that doing so did not help, it only made things worse by adding more weight to his conscience.

I've come to the conclusion recently that Will Smith isn't necessarily a great actor, and never really has been, but he was an *entertainer* first, who just happened to land a lot of acting roles. Hollywood mistook this for "just toss Will Smith in it, it'll make money!" to varying results, and now it seems that his star power and ability to charm merely by showing up, has taken a few huge hits recently (á la After Earth, SuiSquad, YT Rewind '18, this). Now he's in an odd double bind where he's simultaneously typecasted and miscasted, in between the world where he's Will Smith™, and the one where he's Will Smith, a guy that does anything.

Honestly, I think the best way to make Old Will Smith identifiable by his decay is by opening him up to the most identifiable thing we can relate to: pain. If I had an opportunity to overhaul the film, I would rewrite the opening by having him operate as a sniper from a building where he is supposed to assassinate a kingpin from a small distance. But not only does he fail, not only does he get in a scuffle with a couple of tipped off goons, he actually falls two stories down and breaks his back. Because of this, Old Smith is no longer useful for the government, which they collectively agree to create New Smith and assassinate Old Smith, Old Yeller style. Also, this back pain will play a significant role for Old Smith beyond the opening as an challenge to him in battle and normal life. Old Smith could be on medicated for his pain and struggle to find a job due to his age; meanwhile in battle, Old Smith could still perform those actions with a key difference: that he is doing these things WHILE under pain dependent on the activities (the more extreme, the more painful, the more he loses focus). Pain is human.
@oinkleberry5 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad idea but then the film wouldn't be about old vs. young, it would be about the nature of pain and disability. So your idea, while good, narrows the premise into a somewhat different tangent. But then again that would be better than what we actually got.

@Nyb 127 Hmmm... What if the government wanted to cut off any loose ends? Let's say that after the government offed him for being injured, Will harboured a a grudge against them because he did so much for them but they just let him go so easily. (On top of that, the government left him for dead instead of nursing him back to health because he is a failure in their eyes) Later, they find out that he was brought to the hospital by someone and is still alive, and wants him dead because they turned their back on him and he is pissed. [Make him do something to gain their attention in the sense where he is taking revenger. Perhaps he hijacks assassination attempts or threaten to let the assassinations go public] That seems like a pretty solid motive no? If not, it could be simply one of their policies. Where assassins who have been let go have to die because of how dangerous they are. (in terms of lethality and the info they have on the government) [A weaker motivation but if done well, can be quite good.]

@@oinkleberry Call obsessive but what you said really bugged me. So I came up with this (not sure if you'll like it) What if we pushed this idea further and give the new Will Smith cybernetic enhancements that allows him to run faster and be stronger? With this, the old Will Smith being handicapped can be taken as "Old things are broken and outdated" while the new Will Smith can be the new advancements that are meant to replace the old broken things. So at the end we can either make them work together (cheesy though) against the government. Or Make either one of them win. (Depending on what message you want to bring) This still adheres to the idea while also humanising him and answering the question of Old vs New.

What the hell happened to the CGI? Did they blow all the budget on the de-aging stuff? The animation is awful, nothing has any weight! 6:28 - Look at that movement. I really feel like this is definitely a real person and not a video-game NPC. 7:10 - What the fuck man... I don't even know what to say about that. 7:28 - Oh good, some more of that sequence. Fake Smith uses fake bike to climb car, car doesn't seem to notice and forgets to move at all. Bike proceeds to do impossible maneuver on top of clueless car. 8:57 - Bike crashes into car's door engine first. Next shot: Broken window, door unscratched. I guess it was a rental and they didn't want to damage it? 9:38 - Seaplane glides like a ghost towards the beach. Again, no movement at all like on real water. Even the still images look fake, though I can't say why exactly. 11:07 - A 200-pound bike crashes at high speed into an artillery gun's barrel and it doesn't budge at all? Even young Smith's face doesn't look that good in my opinion... when he speaks it looks like he's liquid.

I feel like what they wanted to do was having an old man who regrets the things he has done in the past (as he said he can't watch himself in the mirror anymore because he's ashamed of what he's become) and then forcing this old man to confront his sins by having to fight the literal physical manifestation of those sins. Only this time he tries to do it better by wanting to help this kid so he doesn't end up like him. Don't get me wrong I still think it didn't work because of things like junior already showing remorse even tho the Film clearly stated that that only happens when the soldiers get older or the lack of consistency when it comes to the themes. But I think thats the idea they were going for, not so much the new vs old. I could imagine they wanted to Go with that at the begining of the Script but then decided to go with the old man regrets and has to fight his sins idea.

They needed to go the Logan route. You never doubt Wolverine's savagery in fights, but it is clear that he gets tired faster, and it's much easier to take him down than ever before. Jackman added the detail of a pebble in his shoe, so that he never forgot to limp and look weaker. As the movie progressed, even walking would get him out of breath. He's still very dangerous in fights, but nowhere near where he used to be, he does feel vulnerable if enough force was applied against him. The movie also has a peak version of the main character fighting him, and he gets trashed every single time. You really do fear when he shows up, whereas you know that Smith's younger self is about as good as he is, maybe slightly better. I feel like Smith had some pull in the movie, to look awesome all the way through, which was a detriment to the story. He barely struggles to take down entire squads of trained killers, even when he's at the defensive, and when he fights his younger self, it never feels like he's one wrong move away from dying when he's facing him.

I feel like that was what Clay was striving for and Junior was the first incantation of that. So Junior, although being a clone, IS still a human and feels emotions etc. Clay's first experiment, Junior, failed so he continued experimenting and messing with child clones DNA that were created via Henry's DNA. When the super soldier's mask at the end came off and the characters had that brief interaction with him before he died I was like "holy hell this guy is so much more badass than Henry and Junior" and when he didn't feel anything, proposed by Danny, I was like "oh damn" Clay did it. The movie is about Henry and Junior and the struggle there but the true threat is the super soldier at the end, not Junior. Junior was just the first attempt at the super soldier at the end. It would also actually fit with the intended theme if maybe the original hesitated at the start because of the risk to the girl. That way he loses his edge in the eye of the villain. Other ways they could contrast young and old Smith: Old Smith is confident in his methods and abilities, so he follows through on opportunities and doesn't hesitate (unless innocent train girls are involved); however, this carries the disadvantage of inflexibility, so he struggles to adapt when things don't go to plan. Young Smith is much more flexible (physically and figuratively), so when something isn't working, he's ready to try something new; this carries the disadvantage of him dropping strategies and plans that may have eventually worked too soon, and hesitation since he isn't yet confident in his abilities. This could play out in their meeting with old Smith opting for a classic bike, while young Smith uses a newer bike: young Smith easily tracks old Smith's noisier and slower bike, maneuvering through tight alleys and steets to catch up. When he tries to ram old Smith, he goes flying because the classic bike is much heavier. Old Smith could then lose his bike because it breaks down or can't take a tight turn. When they get to hand-to-hand combat, young Smith goes in very acrobatic, and gets bodied by the heavier and stronger (but slower and less flexible) old Smith, who went in boxing. Young Smith then changes up his style, and uses old Smith's weight against (his centre of mass being at the shoulders) by sweeping out his legs. If old Smith still has to win this encounter, he could do so by remembering to adapt: he remembers his own weaknesses as a young assassin, figuring they might also apply to this young assassin (*cough cough* foreshadowing) and exploits them.
