There is nothing wrong with the Robin Hood story, if done well, it is compelling and interesting. Though it ironically lost my interest, King Arthur just had a British tv series that went on for 4 years focusing on Merlin largely. This is where I think you're right that if you change things slightly or take a different approach it can be interesting. Look at the series Sherlock that was very successful.

One last note, if you have the two friends walking away scene at the end of the film then you failed because you inadvertently gave it a buddy comedy feel, because in comedies the characters who feel so accomplished with themselves do that. It's practically a strut and therefore it loses any sense of depth the movie could have had. I mean your having your main characters commit murder and strut away like kids who just beat the bully what is that.

As he sees that Robin is hitting on her as well and the feelings are mutual, he decides to draft Robin for the war to get rid of him. Bam. Conflict. Or make Robin's best friend fall for Marianne at first and get him drafted while Robin vows to her to protect her lover. And then he gets killed in the war, giving Robin a grudge against the Sheriff. Seriously. How hard is it for professional screenwriters to write some compelling conflict? edit: seems like we got the same idea...

I recently rewatched the classic Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, and while some aspects of the movie are a bit dated (no-one in the Middle Ages ever gets muddy, and Sherwood Forest look a hell of a lot like southern California) it's still a rip roaring, tongue-in-cheek action movie. The script is really sharp ("You speak treason!" --- "Fluently."), the cinematography and direction are wonderful, and the climactic duel between Flynn and Basil Rathbone (hands down, two of the finest swordsmen ever to be on film) is still one of The best fight scenes ever choreographed and shot on screen. (Not to mention that many of the stunt men were being shot with *real* arrows.) But at its core, it's an exciting, well made action adventure movie, with colourful, larger than life characters, that makes you feel like a kid again and go off and climb a tree, or pick up a stick and play like it's a sword. Robin Hood is a classic action hero. There's enough in his centuries old story to tell, and *still* be relevant. You need to "Tell the untold story" or throw on some rediculously anachronistic costumes, snort a line of charley, and try and be all trendy, deep and edgy. Just make a movie that people would say "They don't make them like that anymore" to their kids.

The directors wanted to modernize Robin Hood. Obviously audiences didn't take well to the modernization of the classic and i think that's also why along with the horrible motivations the movie became a failure. @@RealCoolGuy, how long have you lived in America? Red and blue have been used to designate Republican vs Democrat for quite some time. It's been consistently red for Republican and blue for Democrat since about 2000. Before that the colors flipped, or other colors were used. It began as a visual aid in news reporting, to show viewers which party won in what state, and as an indicator on ballots for non English speaking voters. Before that red and blue was used on maps to designate Union vs Confederate territories/troop movements. States are often referred to as red States and blue States, this referred to which political party is predominate in that state. Now, people are constantly saying things like, "remember to vote blue at election time". So, I'll ask again, how long have you lived in America?

It might've done better, especially with the Iggy actor. Like Kingsman it could've been remembered as a new IP (or a Thief adaptation, whatever works) with some badass bow-fu action and shiny costumes, but being Robin Hood it'll be remembered as a confused adaptation of that.

This is another weird instance of highjacking the story for a political reason. Robin Hood begins with Europeans armed with bows only and wearing armored vests, complete with anachronistic combat knives. They fight street to street with turban wearing Muslims. GET IT??? THE IRAQ WAR!!!! This same issue made Prince of Persia stupid too, having a lie about 'weapons of mass destruction' (swords for some reason) leading to the invasion of an Arabic country by an evil empire. It's not only nonsensical in a historical sense, it's so on the nose people who politically agree don't care and people who don't are annoyed. It's sound and fury signifying nothing.

I've seen PoP twice (I like it, so what?), and I don't recall anything about "weapons of mass destruction". If I remember correctly, Ben Kingsley simply lied that the city had been selling weapons to some other enemy after declaring itself neutral. Besides, the plot of the film wasn't (as) incompetent as this one's seems to be.

This movie was one of the most badlarious things I’ve seen in years. It starts with Robin getting an old timey parchment with the words “Draft Notice” on it. Amazing! From the war scenes where they’re running around with longbows checking corners and taking out rapid fire ballista nests to the sherif’s guards with riot shields and rapid fire crossbows with ammo clips, this movie was AMAZING(ly bad)!

If the entirety of Act I is the Prologue, then from that perspective, the entirety of Act III is the Epilogue. This cannot be the case because the Epilogue cannot contain the climax of the film, or story for that matter. The Epilogue in storytelling comes after the climax, at the end of Act III. These scenes are referred to in filmmaking as the Resolution, which can be made up of one or more scenes, all depending on the execution of the story. The Prologue section is part of Act I, but not the entirety of Act I. It takes place before the Inciting Incident, which is either an event or a number of events that throw the Protagonist's world out of order or equilibrium.

Looks to modern also, some of the scenes looked like a 21 century night club. Just didn't have a med-evil feel to it, he looked more like a Nazi than a sheriff in England. Totally no atmosphere because of this.

Y'all are hating on the costumes but imo this is one of the most charming and interesting aspects of the film. The whole design aesthetic is this weird future/ medieval/ fantasy that reminds me of King Arthur LotS. The movie isn't very good but at least it has a clear style. The crew weren't trying to be true to history at all. Russell Crowe already tried that.

In my opinion they should have scrapped the whole “robin hood” part of it entirely and focused on the war movie part of it, which was by far the best part of the film and something we hadn’t really seen before, a historical war movie with a distinctly modern feel.

I have to thank the first prologue in the middle east for immediately setting the tone. At first I thought this would be another gritty reimagining of an old story, but I was suddenly watching American Sniper for a few minutes--complete with a danger-close artillery barrage. Let me throw my expectations out the window (until Ben Mendelsohn brought some of them back with that neat moment of characterization).

@Steven Makell I was laughing during the clips OP showed because their camera framing, prop destruction and actor body language was ripped 1:1 from the Matrix's Lobby scene. It's hilarious. It's like they're trying to make a political film, but they're exaggerating it so much it feels like satire. How did they pitch this to the producers? It's such a difficult concept to get right, and it's just so, so bad.

The problem is that the costumes (and sets for that matter) are completely anachronistic to the setting the movie is supposed to take place in. It looks like it takes place in a science fantasy setting like Star Wars rather than Medieval Europe.
