I just lost my best friend to cancer on my 30th birthday. He was 30 as well. He was a liar, a heroin addict, a thief, and a son of a bitch. He also knew more pain than anyone else I knew, and I loved him since when we were just kids. He was always in and out of jail. My dad took him under his wing secretly for years trying to help him get sober, he would steal from my parents and run back to the junk. I always knew his life would end early. I know it couldn't last. But at the same time, it ain't right, all that he saw in this poor life. And I used to be able to count my dead friend just on my hands, in the last ten years I've run out of fingers and toes. I'm 30.

This is one of those songs. I sat here and listened, mostly with my eyes closed, and thought back over the last 40 years. Of everything I've seen, of all those I've lost in a myriad of ways, of the pain (that I've endured and caused), of all the times I've tempted fate and thought of times I wanted to end it all. And damn did my eyes start leaking. But its songs like these that remind me that I'm not alone in the pain I carry. We're not alone. There are folks out there that know and understand. And it gives me hope
