As for why Jordan swaps during battle: When they're a guy, they're defensively oriented. It's why Brink shot them at which point they swapped to their guy alter and stopped the bullet When they're a girl, they're aggressively oriented. They get some sort of energy blasts

I’m very impressed by how they included self harm/eating disorder into the idea of using powers. Marie has to cut herself just to have access to her arsenal, and Emma has to purge in order to access her power, and it’s also related to how her mother caused her to have an eating disorder by shaming her about how she can go the other way. Add to that the transitioning power of Jordan, Andre’s relationship with his dad, there’s so much really really good meat to the characters of this show and it’s handled really well.

The show shows you why Jordan Li changes gender while fighting. When they are a guy he has invulnerability, not amount of physical damage seems to hurt him, and when they are a girl she has faster reflexes and energy blast.

Jordan is one of my favorite characters. Their male form gives him super-strength, enhanced speed, extreme durability. In female form she has energy blasts. And notice how They wear a necklace made of half chain half pearl to represent those dual forms.
