The problem is that there are quite a number of women with XY chromosome and with fully functional female organs and the ability to give birth. Recent research suggests it affects about 1- 1.5% of global female population. So even in biology there is not a simple criteria for defining female.

Okay. I'll play. Explain which specific gene differentiates men from the female default. Where is this gene located, normally? What happens if it is not present in that location? Or missing altogether? What is the difference between chromosomal, genetic and hormonal sex? Yes, those are different things. Ask a biologist.

Exactly. Someone who can breakdown the conditions of different DSDs and how some may afford an individual the advantages of a male puberty and put women in danger in a contact sport should have been the one to speak. Not all conditions where a person has a Y chromosome means they can process testosterone the same way a man could. But looking at this individual, I don’t believe they have Complete androgen insensitivity disorder. Maybe swyer’s syndrome, PAIS or 5-ARD (the latter being what Carter semenya had and is essentially a DSD that means a boy is born with underdeveloped testes and penis and may look female but will go through a typical male puberty).

@@jeremytinexxy is klinefelter’s syndrome and a male specific DSD. They may be “feminized” in some aspects of their bodies like wider hips, but they are not lesser men or a third sex. To imply otherwise is offensive. There are a couple of DSDs where the individual may have a Y chromosome and elevated levels of testosterone but an inability to process it during puberty, meaning they won’t have the physical advantages of a man. But there are others where the individual is simply missexed at birth because they had an underdeveloped penis and testes. They will still go through a typical male puberty and develop a male physique. These individuals, as unfair as it may seem, should not be allowed to punch women when they can land a blow like a man. Safety should come first for female competitors. Scientists who understand which DSD bestow the advantages of male puberty and put women at a heightened risk should be the ones consulted, not gender studies majors. The decision should be based on material conditions, not ideology.

Imane Khelif naturally produces more testosterone than the average woman. She has (perhaps, because it's controversial) an advantage, like other great champions. For example, Michael Phelps' body produced less lactic acid than that of his rivals, which shortened his recovery time. But what makes a great champion isn't having an advantage, it's the ability to do something with that advantage. I knew another hyperandrogenic young woman whose femininity nobody would have denied - but it's true that she didn't play sports. I knew a high-potential child who didn't want to pursue his studies - he's now a 40-year-old bricklayer who thinks he's always right, and who has never understood that neglected potential withers away until it's too late. If Imane Khelif is today in the semi-finals at the Olympics, she owes it above all to training, perseverance and mental strength. It's a pity that she has to bear the brunt, on the one hand, of the quarrel between the International Olympic Committee and the International Boxing Federation and, on the other, of the moral harassment born of a controversy that is more political than sporting. What her harassers forget is that she is a person and has a right to respect, including respect for her privacy. All this talk in social media about her anatomy and biology, which are no more than suppositions, are a crude and violen affront to her human dignity.

Thank you for your reply. This report was focused on the Olympic competition currently underway in Paris and in particular, on the sport of boxing. I have been a fan of boxing, (& the Olympics) for over 30 years and watched many amateur and professional (world tittle) fights live in person. Boxing, unlike the majority of most other Olympic and professional sports can be dangerous for its competitors. There are rules in boxing competition for a reason, and this is to preserve the the health and safety of the competitors as best as possible, and to ensure there is no advantage or disadvantage to either competitor. Hence, the major rules are weight limits and of course gender. I have never met any boxing fan interested to see a mixed gender boxing competition. Boxing is a sport, and the Olympics should be fair and rules need to be followed. I hope basic common sense will prevail. If you are talking about political or social ideology, equality or policy, that is an entirely different topic of conversation. Very Best Regards

Seems to me that the real issue is how to ensure that sporting competition is, well, sporting (that is, fair and interesting). Look at the specialised body types that world-class athletes have: if you don't have the genetic advantage of long limbs in volleyball or fast-twitch muscle in sprinting, how can you hope to be competitive? There's plenty of overlap in the bell curves, and we already have weight classes in boxing, so why not expand that idea? I worry that this is just going to get caught up in endless arguments about whether gender and sex are distinct concepts, whether sex is binary, and what exactly defines one's sex or gender. "Biological sex" is a much murkier concept than people commonly think.

He was banned too, from other competitions because he not only failed the testosterone test but the gender examination revealed too that he has xy chromosomes so he can't compete with women. I do not understand why there has been a failure to end this controversy. Regardless of appearances, and it has to be admitted that they are not typically female, they may not be male either. They are some variant of intersex, such as XXY, raised as female because their gentalia are sufficiently female. Surely, it would be easier for the boxers in question to give permission for their chromosomal make up to be published, or, better still, for all competitors to have this on record. However, this would then raise the issue of whether XX and XXY, or XY and XXY, should be allowed to compete against each other. My personal opinion is that XXY have advantages over XY, so should not, but do XXY have disadvantages compared to XY? This is more complex than "it looks like a man, so it is a man", I've known several very masculine looking woman, and a few feminine looking men. Science must decide what a person is.

I don’t think this is completely true. You can be born xxy and have female genitalia and reproductive organs. Some people can be born with both male and female organs. Parents in these cases are encouraged to declare a sex under which the child should be raised (although new norms might be altering that).

But someone born as a man who chooses to be a woman isn't a woman, s/he is a man who chooses to be a woman. All things balanced around biological women should only include biological women, period. Things like this just screw over biological women for not being men, which was the whole point behind separating men's and women's sports in the first place.

So Imame got female genitalia since birth and was identified as female by the doctors when she was born. She was raised as a girl, lived as a woman. There is nothing trans about her. I remember a lot of people saying "you are a woman if you've been born with female genitalia and if you've been born with male genitalia you are a man!". According to those people as well Imame is a woman. Might she have different sex chromosomes? I don't know. Could be possible. If so, then yes, for some sports she'd have a genetic advantage. Same as people who've been born with the athletes gene mutation have a genetic advantage in sports. Or how people with above average height have a genetic advantage regarding to some sports like basketball. The question is why you'd ban if she might have higher testosterone levels but not somebody with the athletes gene or increased height or any other genetic advantage.

"Khelif, from Algeria, has been allowed to compete in the women's boxing in Paris despite failing gender eligibility tests last year. DNA tests showed she has XY chromosomes, identifying her as biologically male." He destroyed the dreams of Angela Carini, a dedicated athlete who worked hard to reach that position. By taking advantage of the physical advantages associated with being male, this constitutes bullying and even physical abuse towards women. Khelif should be officially sued for assault on a female. Where is the feminist movement defending this woman who was abused by a bully?
