The reason Worf had so many problems with other Klingons, especially politicians, is that he embodies their values better than most of them do. He is more honorable than many, and a true warrior. He's like the Captain America of Klingon culture. He's not what Klingons are, but what they should be.
@LCBanga2 жыл бұрын
I never the thought about that way. The most Klingon Klingon in ST history. wasn’t even raised on K’ronos. He was raised on earth. He is the “Captain Klingon”
@Wolfeson282 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting recurring theme throughout Star Trek, where a seeming outsider to a group actually embodies their values better than anyone from inside the group. We most often see this with characters who seem inherently non-human developing and displaying qualities that we consider "human" - Spock and Data are probably the best two examples of this.

He grew up idealizing Klingon culture from a distance rather than just growing up being a part of it. That's what makes him both a great Klingon at times and a terrible one at others. It's like getting all of your knowledge about American democracy from a book, then moving there and going.. "wait.. it's not supposed to be like this, is it?"

Well said - look at his actions even in the aftermath of killing Gowron. He kneels by his defeated foe, opens his eyes to Sto-vo-kor, and roars to annouce that Gowron is soon to arrive there. Another warrior may have left him where he lay and asked that his soul be damned to Grethor - but in those acts Worf still recognises that Gowron, while dishonourable in deed, still answered his challenge and faced him like a warrior should, and Worf respected that enough to follow the death rites for him.

From Memory Alpha: "For his last day of shooting, actor Robert O'Reilly spent most of it on the ground playing the dead body of Gowron. At the end of the day, when filming wrapped, O'Reilly called out to Michael Dorn to help him up (as actors cannot get themselves up off the ground in full Klingon wardrobe). However, Dorn had already left the set, prompting O'Reilly to complain, "Boy, once they kill you off, they forget all about you.""

Also unlike GoT, death in Star Trek actually feels like it means something and isn't just done for shock value. Every major character death carries weight to it, and they don't kill off half the main cast in one episode just because they want to shock the audience.

@@JimmyStellertrue but his personal vendetta against Martok clouded his judgment meaning he had to go for the Empire to survive. One should never mistake unquestionably loyalty for underhanded decite. Gowron would have been better situated to keep Martok close and continuingly praise him and hold him as a example for all other Klingons. Then once the war had been won he could have made him Supreme General then slowly transition him to a less combat oriented role. That way Martok's victories would lessen though remain the measuring stick for others to aspire to. Ultimately he could then name him Ambassador to the Federation and request Worf to be the Ambassador to Qonos thus keeping them both close by. That way Gowron could have continued to lead while not raising an suspicion from either Worf or the Federation in general. Plus with him and Martok being of a similar age. By the time it came for him to step down, Martok would either has died or be too old to lead meaning be could then name a younger successor without any interference.

As I think about this scene, I'm reminded of how each of the two chancellors (Duras and Gawron) were killed and the aftermath with Starfleet. With Duras, Worf was basically chewed out by Picard for killing him and a reprimand was put in his service record. With Gawron, Sisko was more nonchalant about it, as Gowron's termination meant Martok's installation as chancellor. Apparently, Starfleet didn't have a problem with Gowron's death, so I think Picard was too much "by the book" kind of guy and wasn't looking at the bigger picture. Perhaps I'm wrong on this, and it's not a fault on Picard (integrity does matter), but it's just something that has bothered me over the years.

There was great respect between them, and though there was disagreement which lead to Gowron’s demise, he was a Warrior with a heart of a Klingon. @@brianbeach3024 The thing is, though, Gowron died because he basically pulled a Richard Nixon, and resorted to dishonorable acts in order to preserve his power in the Klingon Empire. He was so paranoid about Martok ascending to the Chancellorship (even though Martok, being a soldier first and a true warrior, had no political ambitions whatsoever), that he put Martok in battles that would have either led to Martok's death or dishonor. That in itself was a dishonorable act, an act which Worf rightly knew would lead to the Klingon Empire's defeat at the hands of the Dominion. So Worf was left with no choice but to kill Gowron in order to preserve the Empire. Based on the dishonorable actions that Gowron took in his pursuit of clinging to power, I think it is more likely that he would end up in Gre'thor, not Sto'Vo'Kor.

I've always liked how Worf gave Gowron an honorable sendoff (i.e. opening his eyes and giving a warrior's howl). The cowardly Duras did not get that gesture after Worf slew him. Whatever else Gowron was, he was no coward, and Worf afforded him the dignity of a warrior's sendoff.

Martok has a perfect story in a way, from a man born in the lowlands of Qo'nos, to being rejected to become an officer by a legendary warrior like Kor because of his low birth, to getting a field commission to that officership, working his way through the ranks to become a general, having two years of his career as well an eye taken from him by the Dominion, to becoming the leader of the entire Klingon Empire. Worf naming Martok leader of the empire, was actually the BEST THING he could have done for his people! Like how commander Shepard chose Admiral Anderson to be councilor to represent the alliance. Why? Two reasons. One, they’re both soliders and don’ let their people suffer or tolerate corruption or injustice. And two, the most important reason: ...both men DID NOT want those positions in the first place! Why is THAT important? Because they had NO AMBITION getting in the way, and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to gain politically, from being a leader/representative of their peoples.

Martok's life story and rise to this position really is interesting. Most klingon Chancellors we've seen come from great houses with long, noble lineages that stretch back generations. But Martok? His family were commoners from an impoverished corner backcountry. He comes from no great lineage, his family likely had not great legends to their name before he entered service. Everything he's done, he's achieved with his own two hands. He started from nothing and rose to be the most respected general in the entire Klingon Empire. And that is why he will probably be the best Chancellor the empire has had in a long time.

Martok was basically the Lowborn Klingon equivalent of William IV. The British Navy was the one Military Service where Nobody could Buy their commission, it had to be earned. Anyone, be they a Nobel Lord or a lowborn orphan who enlisted (or was pressed into service) had to earn their own way through the Ranks. Some of the most revered Men in British History were Low born and commoners, who rose through the ranks to achieve their ranks as Captains, Commodores and Admirals of the Fleet. The Royal Navy was one of the most highly regarded Orders in British High Society for just that reason. Willian IV served in the British Fleet since boyhood, starting at the lowest rank and earning his way through the ranks over decades of service. By age 64 he was Lord High Admiral, by which point he inherited the Throne when his two eldest brothers died. He had spent his life as a Sailor, and was known for the crass manner in which he spoke, like a Sailor. For that he was known as The Sailor King. He was also known for his many reforms, and the abolition of Slavery. Martok was much the same. A lowborn commoner, who fought against countless enemies, earning his promotions, and eventually his commission as an officer in the Klingon Defence Force, to one of its Generals, and finally to its Chancellor,and made many reforms for the Good of the Empire.

Since Duras died, Gowron just left things where they were, merely _implying_ that Duras killed K'mpec to those in the know. Some things to keep in mind: -Duras never directly confessed. He accepted the challenge of the Right of Vengeance because denying it would have made him look like a coward and a fool in front of a traitor. -No one ever investigated who had been in K'Ehleyr's quarters, or who actually killed her. The only evidence is a deathbed nonverbal statement. The writers never even added a throwaway line stating that some sensor somewhere confirmed Duras was there. Yet, everyone accepts that she was killed by Duras over her finding out about the conspiracy. -K'Mpec's murder was likewise never investigated properly (as stated).

I understand the desire to do that because Mogh was falsely condemned, but the house of the father becomes the house of the son when he is proven worthy. Worf cannot be a member of the House of Martok because he is rightfully the head of the House of Worf! He has proved his honor again and again, suffered great insult and disrespect for the honor of the Empire even when the Empire acted without honor. Let none ever question again that Worf is indeed a proud Klingon warrior, and deserving of the highest honors the Empire could possibly recognize. Anything less-anything at all less-would be to show the Empire to be as cowardly and dishonorable as the House of Duras the Betrayer.

Would love to see a series chronicling Mogh up until his demise in 2346. See his exploits and gives us a chance to see a young Worf with his Klingon family.

I read somewhere that JG Hertzler auditioned for his role by depicting a Klingon that is calm and level-headed rather than full of bluster, and that depiction really made Martok into the amazing character he was, this in a show with a LOT of great characters. And so much credit also goes to Robert O'Reilly too, for making Gowron so over the top and powermad. And those googly eyes that he gave to Gowron were priceless! Martok, Gowron, Worf... Lursa and B'etor, and Kor, all so well played by such talented people. They brought the Klingons to life!

Worf did this because of Ezra Dax. She told Worf the Empire was corrupt and deserves to die. After Martok sat back down after saying "For the Empire" this resonated with Worf after his discussion with Dax and he had to stand up and challenge the Chancellor.

I remember watching this when it first aired i had goose bumps lol, I loved the story arc that started way back in the next generation in that two part when the house of durous wanted to frame the house of mog to protect the secret from the battle of Kittermer , DS9 did a cool job of continuing that arc and closing it perfectly in this episode, it might have took 10 years or so but hey lol better than nothing

Who knew when Worf killed Duras he'd eventually also kill Gowron?

If you can take down a Klingon almost instantly with a single shallow stab in the side, if that's a super vital area for them, you'd think that the armor makers would take that into account. Maybe have armor that features a plate there?

I know, it's an amazing aspect of Worf's Character arc, which, being ten seasons long, was kinda a unique opportunity for the writers. Love that they did this. it's so great.

Say what you will about Gowron, he may have not been the best Chancellor but he lived and died like a Klingon. It was a good death, and Worf respected him enough to cry out to the dead that an honorable warrior was coming to join them.

Gowron was awesome when it came to how he treated Quark. But he pissed off and screwed with Worf just one too many times. And even then, credit to Worf and his honor that he only killed Gowron to protect the Empire and its honor, he didn't kill him to revenge all the times Gowron assaulted/insulted his personal honor.
