When Barry and Robin sing separate verses and then together, the contrast makes the lyrics all the more stunning. This song also shows Robin's power. Usually he sings more softly, almost like a cry. Although not as pronounced in this song, NOBODY had Robin's vibrato. He was variously called the "Songbird" or "The Pavarotti of Pop". Vibrato is something you either have or do not. Some claim it can be learned with much effort but not from what I have read or heard. His was untrained, effortless and totally natural. It is an absolutely accurate variation in pitch a dozen times in a millisecond. I've heard it described like AC (alternating current) and it involves the central nervous system's effect on the vocal chords. Right, don't forget Mo's voice is in there too! Notice the twin towers?

Barry starts this off in an extraordinary r&b falsetto. Then he and Robin sing in unison before Robin unleashes the magic. The power in his voice soars to the heavens. To me, this is an anthem. One of things I like best (and there are many) about these brothers is the way they play to each others gifts. The contrast between Robin and Barry is stunning, but listen to their unison, their voices are in perfect pitch. Can you tell which is which? Oh, and Mo is the Webster's definition of cool. Their is a line in his 1970 song, "Railroad" that goes "I ain't juiced none of that glory." Every time I hear him sing it, I think only he is so totally cool enough to pull that off. I love seeing Alan right there playing guitar with them. This song is sad, I understand it was written about Andy's break up with his "TV star" girlfriend. This is only 5 years after his passing, so you can tell grieving is still going on. Lastly, I love this song so much, but this video gives me goosebumps. The twin towers are in the background. There truly is a "hole in my soul."

I believe the Bee Gees recorded this version of For Whom The Bell Tolls for several reasons, but in particular as a dedication to their younger brother Andy, who died in 1988 at the tender age of 30 years.
@beeharbour Жыл бұрын
I never heard any of the three brothers say they wrote any song for Andy but "Wish You Were Here" but this one and 3 or 4 others are frequently said to be "for Andy" in KZbin comments. I could be wrong, of course, but this seems particularly unlike a song about a lost brother. I don't think Barry, Robin or Maurice were as obsessed with Victoria Principal's break up with Andy (which this is claimed to reference) as perhaps some fans were. Everyone hates to see a sibling or a friend get their heart broken but generally none of us are still brokenhearted about it ourselves 15 or 16 years later.

The song was written about their younger brother Andy who died following drug and alcohol addiction struggles after a traumatic break up. He died in the 1970s and it wasn’t until the 1990s that they felt able to write and perform this. He was also a singer in the Uk but I’m not sure whether or not he was known/successful in the USA or just in the UK.

Even more perfect when you consider that, as songwriters, they are able to translate their personal tragedy into such a beautiful tribute knowing that so so many listeners can relate... making it somehow comforting to know we are not alone in our grief. After Andy died, their first song was WISH YOU WERE HERE, and also TEARS. Their father died almost 3 years to the day after Andy, they said of a broken heart. They wrote this song that same year. Some of the words sound like it’s written from the point of view of their father, but some certainly their own feelings. It was typical to give the song more commercial appeal by implying a love interest. I’m hesitant to request a reaction to TEARS, but..

Beautiful song! But I LOVE the Bee Gees so much! If you loved this you will certainly love another post disco song of theirs from the 90's called "Wedding Day" This song also features a lot of Robin solo. Its a loving song about a couple's wedding day, obviously, but I find it so precious. Even though all the brothers were on their 2nd marriages, those marriages lasted a lot of yrs for each of them. Maurice's second marriage 28 yrs until he passed away. Robin 27 yrs until he passed. And Barry's 2nd marriage 52 years. So I really commend them for that because that is very unusual in the music business! Another song from the 90's you might like is "One". And I don't think you have reacted to "How Deep is Your Love" which is from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. I think that one is my ultimate fave of the Bee Gees...and "Fanny..." haha

If you want to react to pure Robin lead songs there would be "Country Lanes" from 1975, "IStarted A Joke" from 1968 or maybe "Lamplight" and "Black Diamond" from 1969. Then there is "My Life Has Been A Song" from 1972/73, a very repetitive song but Robins vocals are insane. And there is "The Singer Sang His Song" and "In The Summer Of His Years" and "And The Sun Will Shine" all from 1968. Or maybe "Wedding Day" from 2001. There is also his solo works like "Juliet", "Like A Fool", "Boys Do Fall In Love", "Toys", "Please" and more. Another shared lead would be "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" fra 1968 There is to my knowledge only one song where the 3 brothers has a verse each and that would be "Elisa" from 1973. Also if you listen to the their "Ellan Vaninn" song, the unofficial anthem for Isle Of Man you will hear Robins distinct voice. That also goes for their rendition of the Carol King song "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", here Robin's part always hits you when he comes in. But there is so many more that it is hard to choose.

Bang right on, beegeesbuster1 for 'Country Lanes' being THE song to showcase Robin's remarkable voice. As well as the other ones you mentioned, there is a very early one that also fits as a song to display Robin's voice. 'I Am the World' is another example of Robin at his finest.

Powerfully emotional song with heart-wrenching lyrics! The title is the same as Ernest Hemingway's classic novel published in 1940. Hemingway himself derived the title from a line of an essay by 17th century writer John Donne. It says, "...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; therefore, never send to know FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS; it tolls for thee!" So, the title of this song has a fairly illustrious history behind it .
@mariekeung71872 жыл бұрын
Robin said it was the book that gave him the inspiration for the title to the song. He happened to be looking through a bookshelf full of different books and there was the book with that title. And the rest is history!

This song shouts out to me......... " You never know what you have until it's gone ". I saw so many male friends in my time that took their partner for granted. If they had only nurtured their relationship it could have grown and stayed strong over time. I made it a point to always be there for whoever I was in a relationship with. Most of the time I got taken for granted which was heartbreaking to say the least. This song brings back a lot of memories from the past. It's melancholy but still beautiful......

To me, it's a song like a cathedral. You only can look up open mouthed, wondering what's goin' on. The whole songconstruction is just wonderful and brilliant. And then the singing! Sharing leads between Barry and Robin, both of them superb and phantastic, nothing lesser than genius. And Mr. three-part-harmony, Maurice, bringing the whole thing to perfection at all. Now listen to a song, called 'Give A Hand, Take A Hand', out of the album 'Mr. Natural', their anthemsong. You'll hear stunning chorusses. But check out the original, not the earlier demoversion.
@janicetrimmell68972 жыл бұрын
Yes, the cathedral is the New York skyline with such unexpected contrasts between the sweet soft r&b and then the power. I just listened to the Mr. Natural album yesterday. I understand completely! Robin's fabulous singing is superb. Ofcourse Barry too, I adore Maurice also! When I was a teenager in the 70's I always was playing The Bee Gees. Believe it or not, I did see this from another reactor, but just wanted to know what you thought. It's only about a year ago I actually did see this particular song, it is SUPERB & ofcourse sad, so well written too. The lyrics, wow!! xx 💝💝💝
