I guess this is the perfect example of the ‘Circle of Life’. This band has been part of my life for the past 46 years. I’m crying watching this, they’ll still be playing it in a hundred years if we’re still around 🥰🥰

It's very sad to see Phil in this way. It is much harder to sing whilst sitting down unless you can sit on a stool and hold yourself upright. He's doing a good job though and, whether you like Genesis or not, "Afterglow" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Nic was improvising the 'fill' (haha. I know) at 1:44 and you can see Phil smile in recognition of him comfortable enough to take the chance. the transition to 'Afterglow' was much tighter than opening night. Just little things I noticed. I'm also finding it most moving Phil air-drumming along with his son - knowing that's as close as he'll get to be to playing drums with him.
@rb14143 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine how that must feel to Phil. At once glowing with pride and at the same time totally, utterly frustrated and helpless. Nick was utterly brilliant throughout.

The man is to be commended for giving it his all. I bet he misses getting up & drumming alongside the session drummer in the old days before returning to the centre vocal spot. Lighting is incredible as usual for Genesis. Pink Floyd, U2 & these guys were always at the cutting edge for lighting displays to enhance the music bc they understood the link between audio & visual, as does their current lighting programmer & designer. If that’s the one person, how incredibly talented he/she is! If that’s the operator as well? Oh migosh!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😃

Gabriel can still sing strongly, as far as I know. Banks, Rutherford and young Collins can still sound the same as it was. And Hackett? Brilliant. Why not try a run with that group? People have begged for decades for a Gabriel, Hackett reunion with Genesis. Why not? Absolutely love Phil, but this will be it for him. His son can bring it back to how it was with Phil behind the kit in the early days. Phil certainly could make spot appearances for certain songs, but he speaks of this being it and he simply needs to care for himself, obviously.

Tengo momentos de alegria y otros de tristeza mientras escucho este concierto. Me impresiona mucho ver a Phil hacer ese gran esfuerzo. Preferiria recordarlo en sus mejores momentos pero tambien celebro su fuerza de voluntad.

Even though Phil's voice sounds strained due to his physical condition, he still does a good job here. The music still sounds awesome even though I found some of the transitions slightly disjointed. However, it just seems so strange not seeing Chester on the drums, and what made Afterglow live so special was the pure power of the crescendo, and power chord change at the end, with the duel drummers bringing the song to a close. Still great to hear it live once again. BTW Steve Hackett's live version touring now on The Seconds Out Tour is equally awesome.

@@fletchsteve I think the difference is Steve really is so still into the Genesis music up to 77 he is is still so proud of it. Even though he has played Afterglow probably 1000 times you can see him close his eyes at end of it still feeling the melody and every note. I feel the other three just don't seem as interested in the really old stuff to perform live just seem to chop it into mixed medleys etc. But again Phils condition makes it impossible for him to now play that stuff. Still wish them all well.

Singing sitting is that good for your voice?

Highlighted...this has nothing to do with what goes on behind the scenes. My point is that this is supposed to be a "performance.." Who believes that a crippled man sitting in a chair struggling to sing is a positive thing in any sense. If those of us who truly love Genesis don't think what we are seeing is sad in any sense of the word...then you are doing it for purely selfish reasons. If you had compassion for Phil and cared about the legacy of the band...do you like seeing this. No different than a boxer past his prime getting pummeled because he thinks he still has it when others around him can't say ...enough Yes you applaud the effort...but do you want to see that? No one feels worse for what has happened to Phil Collins than me.. But.. Not unlike any other profession...when it comes a time when you can no longer do your job...it's time to call it a career and move on. There is nothing about these performances that doesn't speak to greed in various forms...money for the band and selfishness of people (fans) always wanting more when there's no more to give. I have compassion for Phil and don't put my selfishness of wanting more from him at his expense of being embarrassed on a world stage.

I'm not going to be as kind as other people. I loved Genesis and Phil Collins and they WERE great. Time has passed and they haven't been able to sustain like some other bands. People want to keep the memories, I get that...then play their records. This is a travesty...to literally see a group that charges top dollar like their heyday... AND...literally put a crippled man in a chair who can no longer sing and call it a show!!! It's a show...a freakshow...the sad remains of a great band ravaged by time. What have we come to where we find this acceptable? If they were healthy and physically able to "perform"...age wouldn't matter. But if we're now letting bands throw out something like this and we let it happen...there is something seriously wrong. Yes we cherish the memories...that's why we have albums DVD'S and you tube. All things must end...and Genesis and Phil Collins are a perfect example.

With all due respect, none of us have a clue what is going on behind the scenes. Who knows, this may be Mr. Collins final wish, to go on stage with his band and his son. Sometimes, it’s NOT about the audience…it’s about the human beings that make up the band…and they invite us along for the ride. If you are disturbed by the images, then don’t accept the invitation.

I think many people are of the mind that we should give Phil Collins credit for toughing it out and performing despite his ailments but I think it's just another indication of his ego once again getting in the way of quality. If an NFL quarterback or any professional for that matter is no longer able to reach the level needed to complete the task at hand with competence, they are sidelined or remove themselves. Collins needs to gracefully step away from the stage.
@normturner48493 жыл бұрын
Dude, that’s cold. You’d be in the absolute minority. There’s a world of difference between sport and the arts. Fans that actually pay to see a long time band and have bought the records/cassettes & CDs don’t mind bc this is the last tour they will do. Why would you sideline a key player when the fans want to see him? We love him to be there & it’s through that live that allows us to overlook the vocal failings. Genesis has also been about the cutting edge production since the 80s when they first brought Vari*Lites to various countries & left key amounts of the units to start many lighting companies to reduce equipment touring costs for smaller bands. You obviously have no clue about what it means to understand a musical group. Would many ppl see Rolling Stones without Mick? That’s not even a good comparison but it illustrates my point. Moronic...🙄
@AzimuthTao3 жыл бұрын
@@normturner4849 You obviously missed the point, which is...if you can't perform up to or even close to the standards of "play" then you shouldn't be doing it.

@@normturner4849 Actually Rafael has a point. It is not a moronic point. And judging by the comments on these videos, he may not be in a minority at all. I really do understand your own point also which is valid too. I get it totally that longterm fans want to see their beloved singer again and will fully accept his failings as an older unfortunately unwell man. I actually sympathise with that. You're correct regarding the Stones, but Jagger still can perform to a reasonable level (amazing for his age of course). But I do think Collins performance is unacceptable on a purely musical level if we then disregard being a fan. It was the same with the once wonderful opera star Jose Carreras or Sinatra who still had audiences when their voices declined. But fact is it did not sound good. I can see both arguments, but I agree more with Rafael.
