Such a shame the last iteration of Genesis didn't work out. Ray Wilson was perfect on vocals and captured the vibe of Gabriel and Collins really well, while maintaining his own soulful and cultured nuance. Not sure why it only lasted for only 1 album as Ray Wilson has gone on to prove that he's a great songwriter, musician and vocalist who surely could have collaborated with Tony and Mike on a high creative level.

If I were Tony Banks and Michael Rudeforth decides to go away (as he did) I would have gone to ask Steve Hackett to come back. I would have made an agree and with Ray Wilson that would have been probably the best Genesis of the 21 century.

I wish someday Tony or Mike would open up about this period of the band more. There were so many bizarre decisions made seemingly out of nowhere; the indecisiveness with drummers, Tony's resignation to uninteresting and bland keyboard patches, the weird fadeouts that robs particularly the title track to CAS and kills any sense of suspense, the sudden backtracking with touring plans after the album sold worse than they expected, and the fact that they expected their comeback would be this massive, popular event to begin with. It's all just so strange to me. They had he makings of a great reincarnation of Genesis but ran it into the ground through poor decision making.
@DeepakKumar-lv4te Жыл бұрын
There was so much going on in the background particularly with Gabriel. They have talked about it on tv shows about the band. Fascinating how the music and the lyrics were written separately, Peter working very much on his own. Unbelievable how great bands put the stuff together with it often not being all composed together. One example is how the Bee Gees wrote the Saturday Night Fever songs before the film was put together even though you'd swear the songs were written for the film!
@harlowethrombey7665 Жыл бұрын
They should have let Chester Thompson take over as the drummer. Never understood that decision. Also think doing so many Collins songs so soon after he left was a HUGE mistake. It just highlights that he’s gone, and the new singer is a poor fit for them. Also not sure Ray even wanted the job. But how do you say no?

I've seen a lot of classic bands whose music I've loved, knowing that maybe only 1 or 2 of the original members would be there, but I'd go even if it were a tribute act --- I just want to hear a good job done of music I love that's faithful to the original recordings, and if you can't the original folks all together, some are better than none. There's an act that comes around my area quite a bit that does nothing but pick a classic Rock/Pop artist & do their music all night, note for note, and it even sounds like them vocally. My wife & I go see them about half a dozen times a year at $30 a ticket & they rarely disappoint us. I'm glad Mike & Tony were trying to keep the Genesis magic going as somebody needed to, and having only them two is better than zero, but then again, I'd go see a good Genesis tribute band as I said. HOWEVER ---- having said all that, SURELY they could have gotten a better singer, I'm sorry. Good job on the music though from Mike & Tony & the fill-in players as well.

I think Collins has been there right from the start. Took over the vocals as Peter Gabriel left the group. Since then it got a bit downhill. Then Steve Hackett left... Sturmer and Thompson kept it going for Live concerts. Hackett had more succes than Banks and Rutherford, going solo. All in all a group of such extreme talented musicians. Much movement, going alone, coming back for projects and live gigs. Really one of my all time favorites.

Nah. First of all they have transposed this song one whole step down: from E major to D major, because Ray Wilson's vocal range is very narrow. Peter and Phil are incredible and a hard act to follow. Both!!! Even if some people aren't aware of it: the heart and soul of this song is Tony's brilliant keyboard work. I have it written out on my channel. This sounds too dark. I repeat it over and over: Ray is a fine rock/pop singer, but not a great one as required for a band such as Genesis. BTW: Nir Z was a fantastic choice as the drummer. I love his approach to Genesis material. I have such fun watching and listening to his playing.
@roughtakes72712 жыл бұрын
One tone is NOT a fifth, sixth or an octave. People cannot change the structure of their vocal chords. It is far better and safer to sing in a key you are comfortable with rather than force it and lose your voice later in life......they also changed key for Collins in later years so there ya go.....

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is my favorite Genesis album of all time. I think this version of Genesis does a very refreshing take on it. For once you could actually hear the bassline in the mix. For me the bass is 90% of the song. Personally I feel that they should have soldiered on with Ray and given his chemistry a chance to develop with the band. The problem with the poor sales of their one and only album with him wasn't his singing, it was the lame songwriting. What did these guys need more millions of dollars for with those awful pop songs? They should go back to what they did best: writing great experimental progressive rock.

It was still Genesis because the core songwriters are still on stage. To some the front man makes the band. To some the songs make the band. Peter did both. Phil did some. Ray did a little I think. It does not matter. What matters is that this was just a small chapter that ended at the right time. Though I think Calling all Stations was fair at best (Because of 2 good songs Congo and Self Titled). Let's face it. This is no Peter and no Phil. Hey, it was worth a try. This version is not bad!!!
