This has got to be my favorite GC interview. It's plain, simple, and shows that beyond the shock value of his jokes at times, behind them is an educated individual who looked at the big picture and armed himself with knowledge to push people to realize how up their asses they are. Particularly the people who deserve them, which isn't anyone single group. Is his humor crass sometimes? Yes. But does it cancel out the truth in his criticisms of American culture? No. Heck, you don't even have to agree with everything he says. THAT'S HOW RESPECTING PEOPLE'S OPINIONS WORK. Really, Americans need to learn more from people like this man. Currently, social media is flooded by SJW BS that even I from Asia get roped into it while only wanting to enjoy some good ol' content.

George can practically read my mind on the topic of the term “Native American,” I much prefer American Indian as a general term. But I’m more impressed when someone asks me if I’m Ojibwa. Then I know that person actually studies the culture of the tribes instead of just feeling guilt about being white.

I'm going to get flack for this but here we go: Carlin was not really as hardline as he presented himself in his comedy. Like most comedians he was playing a character. Did he believe those things? Probably. But he clearly leaned into the angry blue collar (later old man) routine for his bit. He did NOT want people to regurgitate what he said as if it was gospel. Here i dont see him being that funny and he was actually conveying, to me at least, a great deal of sincerity.
@notatypobrutha
@notatypobrutha 3 ай бұрын
Agree with the assessment of Carlin and his comedy, completely disagree with your standing on this bit. Carlin is factually, scientifically and historically wrong about a lot of things here. African Americans unlike Mexican-American or Asian-American does not designate any country of origin, nationality or race. African American is a specific term used historically and scientifically to describe descendants of slaves. Those who cannot say, my great grandfather is from Bolivia, because that history has been stolen and lost. It’s used to describe an anomaly, same with Native American. It’s only used to describe descendants of aboriginals who had their land stolen. Anti intellectualism is dangerous. The uneducated idolizes wealth and celebrities, they believe their word to be the closest to truth, while believing in people who tell you that academics and reading is the wrong answer.

@@notatypobruthaSo if my grand father was African and my father was born in America, I also was born in America making me an American citizen, again my skin color isn’t black cause I am from Tunisia. What term would be used to describe me?

@@crazyclipshorts American recognizes nationality while African descendant recognizes your family’s country of origin. African American is only used to recognize black Americans who do not have a country of origin as a result of the African/British slave trade
@notatypobrutha
@notatypobrutha 2 ай бұрын
@@crazyclipshorts Almost but no. That would be for every person in the world other than descendants of African Slaves. In your example, American would indicate your nationality while African would indicate your family’s country of origin. You can belong to multiple nationalities sometimes and you can for sure change your citizenship effectively changing your nationality. People who are born in Africa outside of the slave trade and migrated their family to America are not African Americans. They would be considered Nigerian American, Liberian American etc. it’s not the same as how Pakistanis and Chinese are considered Asian American or how Brazilians are considered southern American. The term African American was created for language and academia purposes. For a large population of people to only have 400 years of history is a big blunder in the worlds historical timeline and causes issues whenever we look to academia to answer a question regarding these people and their timeline starts 6 million years ago, but then when you get to modern times they’re the largest group of people with thousands of years missing from modern day history considering it at the macro level. Also remember that calling someone African is akin to calling a Pakistani or Chinese person Asian as to calling a Brazilian an American. Africa is a continent and if your father was born there you’d be able to say that you’re a Nigerian American or Liberian American same how whites can say I’m Italian American and Irish American not European American. African Americans generally cannot trace back their heritage outside of America. The general consensus is that the first slaves to arrive white were POWs therefore there’s some history but far too vague for any AF-AM to pinpoint their African heritage. The term African American has nothing to do with race but rather history, geography and origin
@triples3768

@@notatypobruthahow can African American be used scientifically? lol is this a joke? African American is silly, they’re born in America, they’re Americans. George carlin got a lot wrong. Poc refers specifically to those whose skin color (and ethnic background) has been, and continues to be, discriminated against & oppressed by systems of power. Theres a reason "people of color" is used. My black and indigenous friends both call themselves "poc". Important side note my indigenous friend does NOT call themself an "indian". Bc thats incorrect. They call themself as i called them "indigenous", or by their Nation's name [Wampanoag]. Calling them POC is a respectful way to acknowledge the pain and suffering their ancestors endured at the hands of our ancestors' hands. It acknowledges the systems of oppression that our country was built on, that were put into the 13th amendment, that still endure today. It recognizes their struggle as people in a world where we [white people] have privilege and they dont. I have always felt like George Carlin was a racist, and his deep discussions of words and making fun of PC culture show that IMO. But I will always remember one guy I dated a long time ago had a shirt with George Carlin on it and a ton of "filthy" and offensive words. I had to will myself into ignorance to keep dating that guy. He was a really toxic person and I'm so glad I am not anymore!

Wow. You really did miss the point. If you don’t understand how, you are lacking any critical thinking skills at all, and therefore, it’s worthless to try to explain it to you here. Furthermore, you are using your limited personal anecdotes to define for everyone what PoC means. If you listen to George Carlin more closely you’ll find he was not at all racist or homophobic. His critique and disdain is targeted AT fat, lazy, conservative white Americans, not minorities. Also, that ex-bf might have been toxic in other ways, but not because he liked George Carlin. He probably had a great sense of humor, but you are a bit too sensitive to appreciate it. Just some thoughts on which you may ruminate.
