This is my favorite Carlin bit of all time -- words to live your life by. Always brings me close to tears at the end. "It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge at all. It just is. And so are we,....for a little while."
@teknoarcanist10 жыл бұрын
The genius of this bit is the way it SEEMS to be a critique of environmentalism, as if Carlin is arguing in favor of doing whatever we please with the world. But, in reality, it's slyly satirical, and he's just saying, "Humanity can't save OR destroy the planet, because humanity is utterly arbitrary and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. All man can do is either save or destroy man itself. The planet will go right on spinning either way."
@Kehvan9 жыл бұрын
Um, it IS a critique of environmentalism, but nice try splitting hair.
@brandoncarbaugh79949 жыл бұрын
kehvan It's not, though. He sets himself up like he's taking a pot-shot at people who think we should overhaul civilization / the economy in the interest of saving the world, and mocks them for (it seems) being pretentious worriers -- but then he turns it around, and reveals it's not because they're wrong, but because they're right: we ARE causing catastrophic change. Except, the joke is, it's not going to hurt the planet: just us.
@Kehvan9 жыл бұрын
No... he's ridiculing them for meddling, even when they think they're doing good, because in the end, nature doesn't share our same biases and the worst we can do, while it might destroy us, the Earth will simply incorporate that into a new paradigm. I get how you might be confused, but after all, you're a left wing environmental nut job who must believe we're destroying the Earth in order to give your philosophy legitimacy.
@brandoncarbaugh79949 жыл бұрын
kehvan Okay.
@xnoreq9 жыл бұрын
kehvan What has conserving current conditions of life for coming human generations (your children, their children ...) got to do with being a "left wing environmental nut job"? And don't you get that "destroying the Earth" does not literally mean that the Earth will explode, but that conditions of life will change? For some species significantly more so than for others. Of course the Earth doesn't care, it's just a pile of crap floating in space. The Earth also doesn't care if a big meteor hits it and eradicates all life on it. That doesn't mean we shouldn't care, so let's at least try as best as we can to prevent something like that.
@sidearmsalpha4 жыл бұрын
"We don't even know how to take care of ourselves." That's the one line that always gets to me watching this amazing bit. Humanity's biggest issue is not being able to get along as a species and set aside its differences to solve its problems.

That was his way of breaking a social conditioning/brainwashing which ignores our real problems as a species. We're more of a threat to each other, of wiping ourselves off the planet, than we are to the environment. Maybe we should be prioritizing what the bigger threat is.

Zeph Orac Dude, you missed the entire point of the routine, and you'd probably miss the point of most of Mr. Carlin's comedy over his 40 year career. It's all about social satire and sarcasm and irony and tongue in cheek. He's not saying that we should keep destroying the planet and that pollution doesn't matter. He's actually saying the exact opposite. His point is that we're so arrogant as a species that we say we're destroying the planet when we're only destroying ourselves. The earth will always be here unless it's destroyed by something so cataclysmic that it literally destroys the planet in a physical sense. Earth will continue and go on and we'll die and disappear before it does. That's the point. The earth will kill us before it allows us to kill earth. We will be cleansed from its face like a dog shaking water off its back before we kill the earth. Even nuclear war wouldn't kill the earth. Earth would be rid of us - finally - and start anew.

Exactly. Notice the Marxist language "bourgeois liberals"? George is not denying climate change or humanity's role in it. He is critiquing selfish, elitist liberals like Al Gore, their rhetoric, and their inability to actually solve the issue. Carlin is critiquing from the Left, not the Right. He was well-read. As a Conservation Biologist, who has worked with declining species, this is my take on it. He’s basically explaining it’s futile to save the planet, it’s species, etc. because humans are not as important as they think they are. Trust me, many people I went to school with always claimed they were “saving the planet.” We’re not. We’re heading into our sixth mass extinction (human caused) and life has continued to flourish after every extinction. And working with declining species in the past, it’s always depressing because no matter how hard I work it doesn’t feel like I make a difference. As a conservationist, I never say I’m saving the planet or present my self as some savior but I always say my work is trying to benefit people. We depend on the planet’s services for our very survival (many many examples of this). So when George says “the planet is fine. The people are fucked.” He’s not wrong. That’s why environmentalists or people who believe in it should reframe it as “We’re actually saving ourselves.” But we probably deserve to get wiped out anyway. It’s also important to laugh at yourself and your ideals because self scrutiny is always good.

I agree with Carlin in as far as there is virtually nothing we can do to either help _or_ hurt nature, and I love him for calling out these arrogant liberal do-gooders on their childish mentality. Where I disagree is that I'd like to see humans try to control our own environment at least and continue to evolve and progress. No real reason, I don't have any delusions about it being objectively 'right' for us to do so - I just think it's more interesting than giving up, lying down and dying. I'd at least like to know as much about the universe as we can before we croak. But your attitude is cool. Although I must admit I'm confused as to why you're still alive. I think certain people have the assumption that Carlin is saying we can just keep on consuming and polluting like we've been doing and not caring about trees and owls and shit. It's really about the arrogance and limited-thinking of smug environmentalists who think "saving the planet" is something we are capable of doing by driving hybrids and eating kale rather than a massive overhaul of how we think and do things. I think our purpose is both as an extinction agent and a learning tool for the next intelligent species (I'm betting on the squirrels). We'll clean the planetary plate of some species maybe a phylum or two to make room for future lifeforms to flourish then we'll remove ourselves through our innate stupidity and greed. Several million years later (a mere blink in geological time) the next intelligent species (if we even qualify as a first) will glean from what little remains of our "civilization" and go "Holy shit these guys were fucked up! Let's not do this, shall we?" And the squirrel people still retaining their bushy tails will come to expand across the universe with a cautionary tale of humanity's rise and demise

nothing conceited about it if you realize that you're really doing it to protect yourself. that's what hes saying, stop pretending its about the planet, its about us and he's not saying that's wrong, just that we should stop bullshitting ourselves.

George Carling vídeo on environment should be played to the global alarmists and their messiah Greta.

He was well-read and not a simpleton. His conclusion is we're all going to die because of our inability to change how we live.

Did you miss the part where he says "The Earth will be fine, the people are fucked"? Because that's the truth that Greta flings in your face that makes you feel so uncomfortable. She's not playing on the abstract, speaking of the fate of the planet. She's speaking uncomfortable truths that humans are making the planet uninhabitable - for both wild species and humans themselves.

Meet Harvey: He wants to save the planet. Meet Jess: She's REALLY into Justin Bieber. And Sal? She lives for shoes. Ali, who lives for Jihad. Then there's Tony the car fanatic, Bruce the triathlete, Ronda who's working 3 jobs to feed her 4 kids since her "Hi I'm Rob, I'm an alcoholic" ran out on her & don't forget Rupert & his billion-dollar postmodern art collection. Now meet Peter the Pacifist, who just wants everyone to be tolerant of each other ... & voila! George Carlin's got himself a job.

eh, how so? Our pollution is going to end in our demise, like he said the planet, and nature, are indifferent. New species will evolve. Its us whose fucked.

This is one of Carlin's most insightful pieces, sums society fairly well. I'm sorry you feel that way, but you are truly blind if you can't find a shred of truth in those words.

Carlins bit is 100% accurate. You have people like Al Gore and Obama who live lavish lifestyles but they tell everyone else they need to sacrifice their lifestyle for the environment. Obama was putting down Africans for wanting AC and big homes while he got to Africa in a giant airplane with AC.

@Sp33dstix The man was first a thinker and a moder philosopher and then a comedian. George studied people and our behaviour and went from there. We as a kind are pretty dumb, and he was trying to say that all these years.
