Not permission, he just needed to pay royalties to the rights holders. You don’t need permission to sing a song in public, even in a paid venue. To put it on an album would require permission though.

To me, George was always so much 'deeper' in his understanding of things & that aspect was revealed in the lyrics of the tunes he wrote, which 'others' seemed to think to be 'out of step' with Beatles tunes. To me, they shone a light of their own. He certainly did a beautiful rendition of this tune, while was primarily John's work.

I saw this tour at The Forum in Los Angeles. Still have my ticket stub and program. I think Robben Ford was 17 years old or something. I’d never heard of him before but I’ve followed his career since and was fortunate to see him play live and meet him. Met George too by accident in an elevator of a hotel. Super nice guy - he kept the door open for me as I was struggling with my suitcase, travel bag and briefcase. LOL. We talked briefly - i mentioned a way to add iron to Roses and he thanked me with a personalized autograph. I think Olivia and Dhani were with him but to be honest, I was so nervous all I remember looks at was George.

After almost 50 years what I remember most vividly was Ravi Shankar and the great Raga sounds echoing inside the old Spectrum in Philly. Ravi Shankar opened the show with 45 minutes of Sitar music. There were dozens of musicians playing all sorts of instruments. The audience tired of it all after a half hour and started to grumble. George finally came on stage but his voice was shot from the previous shows. I remember him singing In My Life and thought it was the highlight of his night.

I saw him at the Boston Garden during that same tour. Ravi Shankar was sick and was unable to play, but still came out to say hello to the audience. George's voice was pretty rough by that point and thinking back I think he was pretty well coked up. Billy Preston was actually the best part of the show.

I saw him in Memphis, and I remember well the Billy Preston set, where Billy took control of the stage for a couple tracks. He did not do In My Life in Memphis; I'd remember that. I was disappointed by the quantity of the show that was allocated to Ravi as I was not at all into that music. But it was a good show and I'm glad I was there.

George played the assertive, bluesy lead guitar solos on this track, as well as, of course, taking lead vocals, which seem to be in finer form here at Madison Square then when we saw him at the Oakland Coliseum in 1974 (among the first concerts my brother and I watched upon returning from Britain to the States). Robben Ford played rhythm and second lead guitar, the Evergreen Billy Preston on keys, and funkmeister Willy Weeks on killah base, and Tom Scott's fusion band, LA Express on the horns and drums (I think Andy Newmark was on drums, but don't hold me to it).

Thanks for you insight Interesting about Robben Ford although George new talent and 'real' souls. Robben is a true player - arguably a unique jazz / blues / rock approach he supported Mike MacDonald when he left the Doobie Brothers, The Yellowjackets and many others. The musicians all know him as a great talent. This doesn't surprise me really that he would get on with George and glad they connected. Incidentally - Willy Weeks also played with Mike (and the Doobie Brothers) and of course Billy toured with Mike before his death RIP - they loved to sing Whats Goin' On together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2WbfqOXjtiSd7c I was lucky enough to see Mike in Liverpool when in between songs he and the band broke into a Beatle tribute, Mike then announcing to the audience "Apologies everyone, please indulge us, we had to do that being here in Liverpool - we have hero's as well" It took several minutes for the standing ovation to settle down. George encouraged Gary Moore to leave his Marshall stack at home when they recorded at George's house. The overdriven bluesman was awesome as we know as a rock / blues / metal guitar player with a Les Paul but George understood he had a sweet soul side that was being drowned in the volume and power of his Thin Lizzy and solo blues. Gary thanked him for this later. George was a brave genius, always willing to try and explore something knew and support others, even if it might not be popular or globally well received - he didn't care. He always had a sore throat on stage. He struggled to do a whole concert in the 70s. Nerves didn't help, in the Beatles he didn't sing a lot live but solo he struggled. Concert for Bangladesh his voice was very thin. That's why he couldn't do what McCartney & Wings did. Paul has been non stop concert-ing since 1963 & it's only these past few years it's telling. On the high notes. Keep rockin' Paul!

We had floor seats to see him at the just opened Richfield Coliseum outside of Cleveland on Dec. 3rd, but was canceled due to a major blizzard that hit the Midwest. The band was snowed in in Chicago. I went into the Army the next day.

I've never heard this version of this song, by John Lennon, I don't think it is as good as John's original take! However, George would have been there at the original 'Beatles session, when this song was written. George would have played on it at the time, and may have put backing harmony vocals on the recording. This concert may have arisen out of his other musician mate's, whom he met through the industry, to come out and be part of an all star celebrity concert, do he would have been talked into the idea, and decided to do it. George wasn't all that interested in doing live concerts any more, he'd gotten over it by the time 1965 came along, when all George wanted to do is live the quiet peaceful life of a recluse, in his multi hectare property, and mansion, that required a lot of renovations, rebuilding, and plant and restore the grounds back to some resemblance of It's former glory. George had well and truly gotton over his time's as a famous 'Beatle'. He accually didn't miss it, he hated the idea of it. So he did it as respect to those who wanted him to come out. Doing this song, was possibly put to him, as a suggestion, of what songs might you want to do? Together, they came up with 'Beatle' songs, because that is what the audience might enjoy listening to. George may not had any say in it, he may have liked the song, as he and John got on great with each other. Billy Preston had become good friends with George and the other 'Beatles', as he was there at the end, and he appears on the 'Let It Be' album, and plays on the live, roof top concert. Doing this Lennon song, had to be put together in such a way, so they all could easily play it, plus they wouldn't have spent a lot of time putting the show together, with no rehersal !?! George knew the song well enough to (wing it) and the others would have had some sketchy chord charts written out to guide them. George's time was valuable, so he did it. George did not want to be remembering his days as a 'Beatle', those days were gone for him, and he never liked the suggestion of rekindling the 'Beatles ever again. When ever George was interviewed, and asked questions about the Beatles, he always referred to them and those times, as if they were those other people, not with himself, he'd refer to them as (the Fab) but himself as an outsider looking in, not as a member of. Us as Fans, see him as part of, Ringo and Paul still refer to them selves as being part of 'The Beatles. John saw them as over, never to be again, as so did George, always in the 3rd sense. Read George's book ( I Me Mine ) there, Georgebtells the reader how he really felt, he said he was scared for his life, and since John was killed, brings it all home for him. George was afraid of the extremist's and nutter's. He was a great musician and song writer. He never seeked fame or fortune.

McCartney attended this show wearing a disguise. Lennon was going to join him, until George waved some legal papers in his face whereupon Lennon stormed out. Bummer. I saw him at the Montreal Forum, I think it was December 8, 1974. I was 14, and my first big concert was a Beatle. I saw Paul at the Forum in 1989.

Thats quite an interesting story!! Wonder what those papers were about. Something to do with the dissolution of apple and the beatles partnership (given the year this happened)? Or maybe something to do with john alowing george to play the song live and/or profit from the sales of it, given it was johns song (although I believe northern songs was already sold to someone else by That point and john probably didn't even own the rights himself). It pissed John off, but I suspect George or one of the others had been trying to pin John down to sign the things, and he avoided it. That's speculation, but the story is true. I heard an interview with John where he described what happened. Shame, really. Sorry, no sources. I have my facts correct, but, having been a fan since I was not yet 4 when they were on the Ed Sullivan show, so there's so much I've digested on the band...interview here, there, and everywhere, and every era. Happy trails if you're truly interested. :-)

This was a real highlight of the show. He split the show so that in the middle, we had to endure 90 minutes of sitars, bongos, and Krishna followed by kick-ass rock by Harrison. As bad as my headache was, I guess it was worth it. Brian probably rolled over in his grave.

@@johngore1924 I actually like Indian music but that's not what I paid to see. I'm not alone in this; the critics tore him limb from limb on this issue. We all love Indian music but its the context that made it dreadful. As a 16 year old, I wanted to hear my hero belt out a few Beatles songs. He did and I'm grateful for that. But at that age, I couldn't possibly give 2 shits about Krishna. It took me 5 hours toiling away at my minimum wage job to buy the ticket. Was it worth it? Hell yeah.

Hey I was at the afternoon show at the Capitol Centre. This was one of my favorite songs from that show.I knew he was sounding a rough...but I didn't really pay it no mind...I was there to support him...not criticize or tear him down. I feel blessed that I was able to see George on one of his few tours Rest in Peace George 🕊 Thank you for being a positive part of my yesterdays 🕊🕉🍏 I taped the show on a cassette recorder...listened to it for years after. Don't know what happened to it...would love to hear it again 🕉

@@jamesbeshears6717 I was at the same show, and it was worth the wait in line to buy the tickets weeks in advance (my friends and I took shifts over the course of a long day). Thankfully our Dylan/Band tickets that same year were sold by lottery. 1974 was quite a year for Cap Centre concerts; we also saw David Bowie and CSNY.
