Wow!!! I totally forgot that James Karen did this episode! I met him at a convention about ten years ago when he appeared with his cast from the cult movie Return of the Living Dead. @kdizzle79
@kdizzle79 2 жыл бұрын
1:01-1:05 The look on Franklin Cover's (Tom Willis) face says it all. He realizes that not only was he suckered into coming to a KKK meeting, but he just brought his best friend/brother-in-law George, who is black, to this meeting. Compounded also by the fact that Tom is married to Helen, a black woman. This was a triple whammy for Tom. Also, let's note the fact that after seven years (at that point how long "The Jeffersons" was on), he knew George pretty well and knew that this would not end well for the bigot. 1:11 Bentley, like Tom, is also one of George's dear friends and knew how south that situation was about to go. He knew George was gonna take that bigot apart. So when George moved as fast as he did, Bentley moved faster and was on his ass, not wanting to see his friend catch a case. And George's reaction is the best. Looking at it as a man who's dealt with racism his whole life and who's lost family members to bigotrym this was too much for a man to have to deal with that in his own apartment building. He was NOT having it. I think this was around the time of the show when George stopped using racial slurs towards white people as well.

I presume George administers CPR?
@sfliberal
@sfliberal 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, he does. I remember watching this episode as a kid when it was first broadcast (my Dad was with me also watching). And yes, George did note the irony. In an earlier scene, the bigot and his son are at a CPR class with George. George goes before them and does the procedure on the CPR doll. The bigot and his son leave the class. The instructor asks why, and the son acidly responds, "we're not putting our mouths on anything that's been kissed by a nigger!" That's what the kid meant by, "we left early!" Fast forward to this scene. Yes, George saved the bigot's life. Bigot wakes up and asks what happened. Son, now recognizing George as an actual human being after this, answers his father. The father then growls the immortal line..."he should have let me die!" It took my Dad explaining such evil to me, because I didn't understand it at first. Kids don't. What that bigot father meant was that now he would have to live the rest of his life knowing that a "Negro" had saved his sorry life, and he hated that even more than living. It took me some years and life experience to comprehend that death, to some people, was preferable to being saved by someone of a different color skin than your own. I've never forgotten this episode.
@sfliberal
@sfliberal 2 жыл бұрын
Here's a more complete clip showing the context. I was wrong about the son saying that; it was actually the father. Well, it has been 40 years.... :-)

George Jefferson performed CPR and saved the anti-black racist, which was a mistake if you were to ask me. The anti-black racist that George saved asked his son who saved him and the son said George did and the anti-black racist said to his son: “You should’ve let me die.” SMH After those words, George said to Tom and Mr. Bentley: “No matter what you do you can’t change them.”
