There's a lot going on with Valyria. As you say, the description is an obvious shout-out to Melnibone; it fills the role of the Roman Empire in the history of his world, the fallen hegemon leaving behind a lot of quarreling successor states; and its downfall with a handful of survivors coming out of the sea to become kings echoes Tolkien's Numenor -- which was itself based on Atlantis. GRRM's skill at weaving together history and legend and fantasy is what makes his world so deep and rich.

H.P. Lovecraft also wrote a short story about a great civilization that suddenly fell because they pissed off some eldritch being, called "the Doom that Came to Sarnath". Not only it is called "the Doom", people of Sarnath were also originally shepherds, just like Valyrians. Reading Barth's record of Aerea Targaryen in Fire and Blood convinced me that something Lovecraftian was going on with Valyria. So anyways I think it's safe to say something similar happened with Valyria. The Valyrians, consumed by their arrogance and greed, used too much magic and dug too deep in the Fourteen Flames (like the Dwarves of Moria from LOTR). After all the mages controlling Fourteen Flames got killed due to Dragonlords backstabbing each other, they woke up some unspeakable eldritch horror and brought doom upon them.

Stone men and dragons, dragonstone is needed to properly hatch a dragon otherwise the egg turns to stone, stone men also turn to stone slowly, it’s a cursed magic, but consider also that what started the doom may have been as George says in the video blood magic, the real cause of the doom may have been the greedy dragon lords mixing their own selfs with dragons blood, hence why men turned to stone as did the dragon eggs

My guess is that he was hesitant to impose American-influenced pronunciations on British actors, which was probably a smart idea to preserve authenticity. Also in the old days of the show they allowed dialects to shine through a bit more, so that the same word had different pronunciations by different characters, but unfortunately they done away with that quite quickly, which is a shame because it's a breath of life that few shows ever include.

@@nathanielbugg7355 not sure about the stolen part but it's pretty clear that Valyrians were created, just like the Others, during Long Night. It's not a coincidence that the Valyrian Freehold popped into existence only right after the Long Night. Last Hero requested help from the children but mysteriously the way they helped has been left out. Pretty sus if you asked me. Let's just be honest and say they helped the Last Hero with some kind of magic as it seems to be their thing. From the TV series we know the Children created the white walkers, the others. It's likely they created the Valyrians as well. GRRM gave the children cataclysmic magic, they've summoned magic that broke the land bridge that used to connect Westeros with Essos. Now we know it's just the Stepstones. You don't need to be a Sherlock Holmes to piece together the puzzle here. What's the biggest cataclysmic event in the world of ASOIAF & GOT? Ding _fucking_ ding. The children of the forest summoned the Doom and there's your motivation: they wanted to fix their mistake. The others were a mistake that span out of control. The children see the Valyrians as the same. The Doom of Valyria was an attempt to save the realm from another dominant supernaturally engineered race. But they didn't account for a time traveling cripple boy to tell the Daenys the Dreamer to get the fuck out. And seeing how three Valyrians conquered the entire Westeros, the children were probably right. There's no place in the realm for either Ice or Fire when we reach the end of the books.

To me it seems like a mixture of various parallels and influences, I must admit I never got the influences of the Roman Republic, but I figured Atlantis, Troy and even the Aryans/Vedic peoples and their vast culture, language and religion that spread out from the Eurasian steppes were possible influences too. The sense of ancient nobility and links to (perceived) divinity and mysticism remind me very much of the Aryans and the legacy they left behind in India and further afield, traces and hints of their original culture, and "empire" if you can call it that (it's debatable perhaps)

The only thing that annoys me with the Doom is how localized it was. That much destruction would affect the whole world. In high magic fantasy it is easy to explain, i.e. magic solves everything. But in low magic it is hard. We dont't see a mention of "ten years of darkness" after the doom or something similar anywhere in his books.
@HowlingSaguaro972 жыл бұрын
I think this is good though, it makes it feel like a real world. A single society collapsing has political effects, and power dynamic effects, yes, but it wouldn’t necessarily cause 10 years of darkness. It may just be… the people of that society are dead and gone and their knowledge lost, kinda like what tends to happen in the real world sometimes
@JohnsDough19182 жыл бұрын
I like to think the Century of Blood was partly environmental in nature, like Chernobyl brought down cancer across northern Europe (iirc) even if it was mainly a localized event.

a bit late on this one, but Daenerys gets her dragons from Illyrio Mopatis, who we can assume bought them or stole them (with a young Varys help perhaps), from a descendant of the Sealord of Braavos, who bought them from Elissa Farman, a lover of a Targaryen Queen who stole 3 dragon eggs and fled to essos like 200 years before the series begins
@Caramelo23606 Жыл бұрын
I have not problem with wild Westeros being stuck for 8000 years in feudalism but somehow the Valyrian Freehold not really doing anything besides mining gold and fcking relatives for 5000 years despite having aerial travel, possibly telecommunications and stone shaping abilities doesn't sit right with me.
@BriarMaeriSibyle Жыл бұрын
they weren't just mining gold and fucking their relatives, they were literally conquering most of essos and practically wiped out the ghiscari and forced the rhoynar to flee.

not sure if you've already figured out what the doom was since this comment is from nearly a year ago, but the doom was the cataclysmic simultaneous eruption of the fourteen flames, or the volcanoes that surround valyria. it shattered the peninsula and killed all the people and dragons within.
