“What I Spend in a Week” videos are as popular now as skinny ties were in 2008. I’ve seen these videos all over social media, and what people are spending is quite frankly shocking. So today, we’re gonna take a look at a couple of these videos, I’ll throw in my 2 cents, and then at the end I’ll give you a breakdown of what I spend in a week.

To my understanding this just proves how much we need an edge as investors because playing the market like everyone else just isn’t good enough. Since the crash, I've been in the red. I’m playing the long term game, so I'm not too worried but Jim Cramer mentioned there are still a lot of great opportunities, though stocks has been down a lot. I also heard news of a guy that made $250k from about $110k since the crash and I would really look to know how to go about this.

I agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day investment decisions being guided by an advisor seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using my advisor for over 2years+ and I've netted over 2.8million.

5:42 a few comments this is in Canada, our dollar store is now on average $5 per item. Some items are cheaper, but every time I go they seem to be more expensive. And don't forget the tax, so she could have probably bought 16 items. Farm Boy is a grocery store. I totally understand the Canadian Tire one! I go in to get my car serviced, I wonder the store and find stuff on sale, they have kitchen stuff, cleaning stuff, yard and garden stuff, sports equipment, diy stuff, and I leave with a $150 car service bill and $100 in gardening or cleaning products. Finally $1600 CAD = $1200 USD approximately.

I’m very frugal to a fault and sometimes feel bad when I spend on myself. I save ferociously and want to now focus on paying off my home. It will be a long, but exciting journey. These videos get me pumped to do better!

My week started off with $57 for doggy daycare and $74 for an eye exam for me, $29 for lunch at BJ’s restaurant and $40 at the grocery store on incidentals. Little Shih Tzu was sick when we picked her up from daycare and the following day we spent $450 at the vet., only to find out she probably pulled a muscle. We were too concerned about her to eat out, so we ate at home the rest of the week. I had time to look at the Chico ad and bought pants and a top for $96. I splurged on a song through Apple, and paid $1.40. on Saturday, I completed my tax return, and to reward myself we went out for a Mexican dinner and I had a margarita, hubby ordered iced tea, $58. Oh, and then my subscription to bark box was $22 for toys and treats for my little Shih Tzu.

This is a great example of the importance of context. In the second video you watch, Spencer spends ~$100 for the week at the dollar store. The dollar store sells lots of great home items which are so useful to someone who’s just starting out on their own (she comments that “moving out is costing her an arm and a leg”). Although it’s called a dollar store, the cost regularly ranges from $1.00 -$5.00 per item in Canada, where this individual is from. While $100 at the dollar store may seem excessive at first blush, she likely did not purchase 100 items that were a dollar each, and she may have been buying starter items for her home that she could have bought at a much higher price at other stores.

My Doggie Daycare at Dogtopia is only $99 per week for unlimited visits...The off-the-rack price was $135 per week, but I asked for a deal, and they gave it to me. Maybe because they throw my Golden Retriever in with the rowdy dogs to try to calm them down.

I don't like the idea that a bad day is spending money and a good day is spending nothing. Especially when you are debt free, and have sufficient income. You budget for it, made the money, managed other financial goals, checked all the boxes, spent what you wanted on what you wanted and had the ability to do so....why do you need to do better? Why is spending in that scenario bad? There's a mixed message here.

I spend more at the grocery - like 200 a week that includes non food items i am buying whole foods and cooking at home. No pets, no coffee out, no eating out, no streaming, no movies out - i guess the grocery store is my splurge 😊

Mine would be 3 weeks of $0 spent and then the 4th week is 1000 for rent 1000 debt repayment and 700 for all my autopaid bills and 500 for groceries ,been doing it for 7 months now

The 2nd girl is Canadian I follow her. As a Canadian myself... keep in mind the prices are going to seem inflated on hers to you because of the like 40% difference between the USD and CAD. Our food costs all 4 limbs up here lol. And restaurants, don't even get me started. I literally treated my brother for breakfast for his birthday last week at Stacked and spent $65 just on breakfast lol. Trust me George, $95 is EASY to spend on a patio hang in Canada. Our food prices are no joke.

George, permanent jewellery are typically bracelets, anklets, or necklaces that have no clasps. The store 'installs' them on the buyer and the wearer can't remove them without cutting or breaking them. Somehow they are popular.

We are about to drop $3800 this week to pay off 2 more debts. We are down to the last few debts and then on to baby step 3. The amount of stress that had been lifted since we stated budgeting in May is incredible. I can't wait to feel the relief of no debt.

Like, I've had people look at me with surprise when they find out I cook regularly. I said, "yeah, every day." They're shocked. Especially single people like me.

For years my husband drove my crappy needs a paint job 5 speed Toyota. All the guys at work drive giant dually trucks. He heard from one of the guys who was friends with the owner of the company that the owner said "that guy is SMART." My husband is a mechanical engineer with a masters degree. When he told me that I said "it's not your work smarts. It's because you drive a crappy car and your wife homeschools your kids."

I recognised the second girl named Spencer Barbosa and she is a very successful influencer who has bought her own house etc, so I would imagine she can probably afford to spend that money and get the check for her family etc. But I understand the concept, that the average person her age certainly couldn’t afford to spend like that! And if she spent differently she would be able to save a lot 😅

I'm convinced if you just plan an "errand day" per week you will spend less. Less gas, less temptation, less purchases....like no stopping for lunch, etc. I just leave the house less and bring lunch to work. It's not so complicated if you think about it

@@The_1995_there’s nothing hypocritical about this. You have to cut back on costs until you get out of debt and increase your income. Once you’re debt free, have a fully funded emergency fund and make decent money, then you can eat out and spend more. While you’re drowning in debt and you’re still paying rent, you shouldn’t be splurging. It’s not that complicated. You know what they keep saying: live like no one else so later you can live like no one else.

I would love to see Dave's response to someone calling in and telling him that they spend as much on pets as George does. $50 in one day on a regular basis for dog care and walking? I guess maybe I'm just too poor to understand....

George is debt free and his NW is over a mil. The percentage of his worth far exceeds pampered pets. Big difference than if one owed 200K in loans and CC and was blowing 50 bucks a week on dogs. Its kind of the burn pile theory. If you can go buy a classic car/boat/rv/ect , you can get it if you could pile that in cash in your driveway and burn it and your life wouldnt be affected.

I would say the dumbest thing I was spending my money on was an oil change for my truck. Folks charge $90+ for it but I started doing it myself and only spend approximately $30 on materials.

And you will do a better job. I worked at Jiffy Lube in college... not great. They will not let the oil drain all the way prior to reinstalling the drain plug (about a 1/2 quart left).

I change everything but the wifes Rav4. Her dealership isnt out of line and it is a PITA. It takes time, but I like to roll under and have a look around anyway. That I I know what gets greased and it gets grease.

I have synthetic oil so it only needs to be changed every 5 months or every 5,000 mi. I only spend about $70 to get it done at my car dealership. I'd rather sit in their waiting room sipping on coffee then be on the ground dirty. Saving an extra $30 every 5 months just doesn't seem worth it to me.

I used to do all my oil changes at home for like 25 years. But then we decided to buy a new house, and HOAs have a strangle hold on home builders, so we are stuck in an HOA which means I can't work on my cars anymore. It is frustrating how the lube places over charge, charge you extra because your car took more than the 4 quarts they provide, then overfill your engine by a quart. Jiffy lube lost two oil caps in like 11 oil changes. So I switch to Midas, and after four oil changes, they lost a cap.

Seriously, guys, Mint Mobile is the way to go. I have a plan for $240 a year, so I just put 20 bucks into my sinking fund every month and then pay it all off in one go when that bill comes around. Huge peace of mind!

I loved Mint! Switching from Verizon saved me a TON. Also the app is super clean and user friendly. My only issue was that the towers Mint uses leave me with spotty service in my area of Nebraska so I’m actually planning on switching to Visible which uses the same towers as Verizon. (And it’s only $25/month👀)

Guess that would depend on which week of the month! First week I spend on utilities & most groceries - house is paid off (I noticed no one added their rent/mortgage pmt in their payments - except you George cuz I know your home is paid for) so it would be very high; then, because I'm old and 'have just about everything I need' - just fresh veggies and fuel .... and hay - yeah I have tiny dogs - but I have a horse too - usually in the 3rd week .... coffee? I have espresso machine; eat out? no thank you - don't know if they are clean - and I'm a good cook now (hey, took 30 years but here I am) ... I even detail my own car and do general maintenance myself. If you plan it right, you don't have to spend much...

Fantastic! Question -- don't you have gas, utilities, car insurance, groceries health insurance costs? That is what is kicking us ... our health insurance premium has been almost $1800 a month after taxes for a year!! Fortunately, this is changing on Monday. We never eat out or do anything frivolous. I am so looking forward to making headway soon.

I spend $93/week on utilities alone, no food included. You must live in a tent, trap for food, don't drive at all, and bathe in streams. My target is $200/week and I'm frugal but don't make my target some weeks.

My wife and I are on baby steps 4, 5 & 6, and spend just under $750 per week, total household budget (includes mortgage, electricity, phone, internet, etc) and all other expenses for a family of 3. Smartest thing spent on this week... Pizza, pack of chicken wings from Aldi, cooked at home for Pizza/ movie night with wife & daughter... with fixings, $23. Dumbest thing I spent on this week... late night dinner at Wendy's, $9.50 when I could have just gone without food during game night with friends.

This would have impressed me more if the totals for a MONTH were shown rather than for a week. Some weeks, you may not get gasoline, or pay rent/mortgage, or out to eat, for example. Utility bills and phone bills and many others are for the month. How about charitable contributions or savings, investing through paycheck, etc.?? Accuracy climbs with a monthly budget.

Have to include as an AVERAGE week, with Rent/Mortgage, Insurance monthly cost broken down to weekly totals. Or the 4th week of the month would be huge! Let's see THAT week! Trend that!!!😂😂😂

Wow. The fast and prepared food is silly. Cut it in half. But don’t stop there. Capture that money by raising your 401K contributions. That mechanism will stop stupid spending and buttress your long term savings. C’mon. Bring your lunch and morning breakfast, include fruit and vegetables with protein for snacks, then convert to average spending cut into a regular (if modest) 401k increase. Too easy!

And what they forget to also include: Electricity and water and heating… But also spending that much money in A WEEK?! That’s so disturbing to me! I grew up poor, that’s so irresponsible… those people probably didn’t learn to decipher wants and needs… I needed to just pay for my needs and even those weren’t always met because of well… we were poor. And what’s more disturbing: They are SINGLE and spending that much?? Cause… we are a family of three and spend that much on groceries for a whole family IN A MONTH! Not a week!

I'm in my late 30s in the USA and I spend an average of $2400 a week if I divide my monthly budget into 4 weeks. That includes my mortgage, utilities, stupid amount of groceries because that is my splurge, school tuition for my daughter, household stuff, etc. Also that includes savings 40% of our income. If you take savings out of the equation it's roughly $1440 a week. Zero issues paying my bills, networth around 320k, and I'm good with it. Honestly I could cut it down even more if I wanted to but I spend $1000 a month on food for my family of three. My 30 year mortgage will be paid off in only 6 years (already paid off 34% since Sept 2020). Life is good.

The second girl even said in the beginning "Moving out is costing me an arm and a leg..." so OBVIOUSLY this isn't a typical week for her. I would have done that on a week were I don't have any crazy expenses.
