I use to work with a guy at a bookstore who hated this book with a passion. He said "Stephen King should have retired after this piece of shit". This being said, this was a guy who had little to no respect for powerful female characters at the center of a story. For me, this is Stpehen King's best book I've read by him so far. This book captures this woman in this horrific situation so perfectly, that there were many moments I forgot it was a Stephen King book. This woman felt REAL. I sobbed when I came to the ending. While for some it might seem a little out of left field, it symbolized so much more than what it might seem on the surface. I got it. And it broke me in the best kind of way. I'm looking forward to watching the film.

Flanagan just hit the right cord - providing perfect emphasis on the main character & her inner struggle like the way other great filmmakers (i.e. Darabont, Romero) with successful King adaptation did in their movies. And Carla Gugino on the lead remarkably turned it into her own show where she showcased quite a powerful performance with lasting impression. The way Flanagan captured the heart of King's story with a small but stellar cast, I'd love to see him doing more Stephen King adaptation in the future...though I enjoyed IT (2017) and as we know the director Andy Muschietti already expressed his interest for PET SEMATARY but I think Flanagan can do a better job for a new PS adaptation. Btw, for your Halloween special, I'd love to see Stuckmann's review on THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE. I'm sure you'll love it too :)

I've been avoiding this movie because I had a feeling that it would be a highly "uncomfortable horror"... and it sure was. But it's so excellent. I really feel like it reached straight into my chest and scrambled all my insides and filled me with dread. I don't know if it's a woman thing... her specific struggles... she goes through every single emotional horror/betrayal that a woman could go through in the span of that single movie. I was also really shocked at the very beginning, before the horror really kicks off - every description of the story just says "they try to rekindle the flame and he dies"... I did not see coming that the conversation they had before he dies is an essential part of the movie as a whole... it is so much more than that summary!

When it comes to Adapting the source material i think it's important to understand what made the original so good, many bad adaptations do an adaptations because the source is popular and do not dive in to fully analyze why so many people like it or even if the source is even good at all but because its popular that translates to = $$$ and it also translates into a very bad souless film. it's also important to not being afraid of the change, its not necessary for an adaptation to be 100% faithful to the book (especially if its a really, really shitty book) because i believe the movie has to have its own identity and not be a copy of its source, its the screenwriters job to figure out what would they change for a better story or to fit in the movie plot since sometimes less can be more. Thats what i think anyway

Love the new intro! Looking forward to all the Halloween reviews. I can't wait to watch Gerald's Game. Not my favourite Stephen King's book, but really good nonetheless.

This film was amazing to me. I wasn’t expecting the events that unfolded. My friend put it on without showing me the trailer so I didn’t know what to expect especially the hand scene😖 but it’s now one of my favourite films👍🏼

The woman from the dream Jessie describes as standing over a well during an eclipse is Dolores Claiborne, the main character from Stephen King's 1992 novel of the same name. The book ("Midnight Mass") that Jessie throws at the dog in this movie was written by Kate Siegel's character from Hush (2016) which was also directed by Mike Flanagan. Gerald refers to the dog as Cujo, which is a reference to the Stephen King book by the same name. When Gerald says, "All things serve the beam," this is a reference to author Stephen King's "Dark Tower" novel series. The headboard of the bed is the lower half of the Lasser Glass from Oculus (2013). Features virtually no soundtrack during the course of the film. n Jessie talks about the Moonlight Man's Bag of Bones, this is a likely reference to Stephen King's novel of the same name. In the novel, the solar eclipse in question is the one of July 20, 1963, whose path of totality crossed Maine. In the movie, it is presumably the one of May 30, 1984, whose path of totality crossed New Orleans. Based on Stephen King's 1992 novel. Carla Gugino (Jessie), Henry Thomas (Tom) and Kate Siegel (Sally) also worked together on The Haunting of Hill House (2018) as Olivia, Young Hugh Crain, and Theodora Crain, respectively. Gerald saying "we should take our medicine" is a reference to the novel "The Shining" by Stephen King, where Jack tells Danny to "take his medicine". This is the fourth collaboration between Kate Siegel and Mike Flanagan, after Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). In Brazil, Stephen King's "Dolores Claiborne" novel/movie were named "Eclipse" and "Total Eclipse". The book above the bed at the beginning is titled Midnight Mass, the title of the eventual show Flanagan would go on to create for Netflix, Midnight Mass (2021). Additionally. The author is Kate Siegels character from Hush. Bruce Greenwood is fifteen years and seventeen days older than his on-screen wife Carla Gugino. At the start of the movie, when the couple are driving in the car a radio news report can be heard discussing the grave robber ('The Moonlight Man')'s latest crimes. Jessie states that Moonlight Man suffers from a disorder called acromegaly which causes enlargement of the hands and feet, as well as his forehead and chin. That is also why he is so tall. Carel Struycken, who portrays the Moonlight Man, does actually have this disorder. The events of Dolores Claiborne (1995) take place during the same eclipse featured in this film. the end when Jessie is covered in blood, with her off-white satin slip, she looks almost identical to Carrie White during the prom, when she'd been dowsed with pigs' blood. This is an obvious homage to Stephen King's first hit, "Carrie".

I watched this movie today because of you Chris. When the wrist scene came, I literally fainted and cut my head on an edge. I swam in and out of consciousness, the blood was everywhere Chris. I had to try to keep sane and focus while calling an ambulance, Chris, not unlike what Jessie went through in the movie. This movie physically hurt me Chris, and you recommended it to me. Why would you do such a thing Chris, why?

Also thought it was incredible. Was really impressed with the emotional depth and how subtle the most unsettling imagery ended up being (no loud noises or score). IMO this deserved a theater release and a lot more attention. Was hoping to hear your thoughts on it as a big fan of the genre. Would also rate it an A.

Eh, you're just saying you'd prefer a scary horror. The part revealing the Moonlight Man to be real (and what that meant for the main character) is what makes this more than just a regular horror or basic thriller. It's very important to what makes this film an excellent character study as it allows her to demystify her fears and overcome them (just like how she was able to overcome her past and help others). Of course they could have made the film a lot more frightening if they left it open ended but they weren't just going for frightening when they made this film. As Chris pointed out in this video, "It's so much more than that."
@cazza8267 жыл бұрын
I think it would have been best if it ended after the newspapers released some info about jewellery being stolen from graves and what not and then the cops never finding her ring, the ending they went with humanized the moonlight man which made him not scary, which leaves the impression at the end of the movie that he wasn't scary at all. Thats how I found it anyway, otherwise awesome movie, and I dont really watch Gore films often but is it just me or is everyone over-reacting at the hand scene??? Wasn't even that bad imo
@TrilobiteTerror7 жыл бұрын
Cameron Ward "the ending they went with humanized the moonlight man which made him not scary, which leaves the impression at the end of the movie that he wasn't scary at all." ? I think it showed that monsters do exist and that the moonlight man is a real, breathing monster. I don't see how that makes him not "scary at all". I go over this and the importance of the last scenes in my other comment above.

This Director needs to make a Dark Tower film. He has stated that he would love to adapt Wizard and Glass. But sadly Sony fucked that up. and they will never be any more Dark Tower films at all. So many good Directors out there who are fans of The Dark Tower who will never get a chance.:(

Absentia is my favorite in his catalogue, or maybe second place after Oculus. It is quite unique and really shows his talents.
