The Vietnamese community in Germany is widely considered the country's most successful immigrant population. But it pays a high price for that reputation.More than half of the Vietnamese children in Germany attend gymnasium, a secondary school that emphasizes academic learning. That is a higher rate than among German pupils. Vietnamese families place great value on their children's education. The high expectations put particular pressure on boys, who have far more opportunities in Germany than their parents did back in Vietnam.

My heart broke a little when the young man stated he had to give up competitive sports, which probably was his passion, to go to school. Not that education is not important, but nothing should stop one from chasing his/her dreams.

Competitive sport will not be able to match that because sport is age limited, while science - the older you get the better you are. I did the same thing and never regretted. First of all, let's not get racist here. This video is meant to show something positive and is meant to entertain if anything else. If anything, I'd say it's cultural differences and nothing is "right" or "wrong" between Vietnamese and German people.Let's look at the differences: In Vietnam (as well as many Asian nations/cultures), test scores are part of the culture and history so people believe that academic achievement is everything. It doesn't matter how much you learn and it's all about the test scores that will grant you the success. What does that mean? Well, obviously test scores will be high if that's what they emphasize and specialize in, but this means that they don't always have the right people for the right jobs because a high test score doesn't necessarily mean the person has the practical skills for the workforce. It's the Chinese expression that thankfully people are starting to realize: Gaofendinen (high exam score but low-skilled). Basically, the learning takes a backseat behind scores. Therefore, in Vietnam, if you don't do well on tests, you don't work, and you don't eat. In Germany, it's different. There are many different ways to prove yourself even if it's not through test scores, so the people who get the jobs in Germany are the ones with the necessary skills and knowledge, which the highest test score doesn't always show (gaofendinen). This means that with less emphasis on test scores, German pupils are more willing to fail and learn, unlike the Vietnamese who (even in Germany) are forced by their parents to only succeed and avoid failure. The Vietnamese would be more likely to succeed materialistically and so would the Germans, but German pupils, once grown up, know how to be actual people and they know what it's like to not always succeed academically. Still though, it's interesting that this video was created because Germans themselves are known for their education and success, and resilience too because of their willingness to fail.

Basically, it comes down to you do what you need to do to survive. If you get it, you get it and if you don't, you don't. Vietnamese do view education as a privilege. However, any immigrant that comes from a third world country with no clean water appreciates things more. It's not a competition amongst countries. Let's just hope more people "get it."

Thang Hoang, If the South Vietnamese government was a puppet of the U.S. as you claimed, then why is your communist government so afraid to hold a free and fair election observed by the United Nations in which your communist government can prove to the world that the former South Vietnamese government has no support of the people of Vietnam? I know that every Vietnamese living in the USA has been calling on you communists to hold a multi-party election observed by the United Nations for many decades. Instead of taking on these so-called puppets of the USA, you have been coming up with excuses after excuses as to why only the communist government should continue to rule Vietnam forever. If you communists believe you have the support of Vietnamese people, let's have an election now and let's see if the communist party or the Viet Tan party based the USA will be the winner. I dare you.
