I notice this alot in LFR groups, it's like they are giving the boss a colonoscopy. You don't have to be right on top of the boss to do damage guys.

Thanks for these videos Preach. I used your Tanking guide when first getting into the game and it helped me understand the basics for tanking. While I still need more work your videos have helped me continue to improve. These step by step guides are just continuing to help me as I level alts and continue work on improving. Really appreciate all of this effort you put in to the community

Excellent content as always, Mr Preacher. To be fair this is something I sometimes forget about, the effectiveness of good movement. It's nice to have a refresher on the basics from time to time as I tend to take a few breaks from WoW on occasion and I can be a little slow to get back in to the swing of things. That said, your content rocks M8!

So, this is going to sound weird for anyone that doesn't play a shadow priest, but I was awful at movement until I started playing one. I would lose so much damage playing other ranged classes from having to move, because I just couldn't get the whole "plan your movement and/or use instant cast spells" thing. But when I started playing Shadow, planning your movement is so important that It made me learn and adjust. Leveraging going into voidform when a mechanic that forces you to move is coming up is such an important and satisfying thing to do. Literally every other gcd, Shadow gets to shoot an instant cast spell that lets you move so efficiently, and then you really have to have yourself situated when voidform is about to end so that you can get off a void torrent and quickly get back into voidform. I've gotten to be so much better of a player, just from playing a Shadow Priest. It's really satisfying.

Some very good points made preach! I'm not sure if this is something to come with another video but here's one more thing: Especially as a ranged dps, you should try to position yourself in a way to keep potential movements as short as possible. Just because your ranged group needs to be spread out to some degree doesn't necessarily mean your ranged groups needs to fill the entire room to it's corners.

i don't know if u missed it Preach or if you will do it in another video but can u talk about tank movement and positioning also? I see many many many tanks that are clueless and do not know that THEY can control and move the boss like they want and that they can dictate and drive the boss themselves. Many tank players don't realize that and are just bound to keeping the boss positioned to wherever the boss stand instead of moving the boss to a nice location in the room and clearing areas for the raid to have a nice big area for them to play around with, and also the tank has to know that its not only about him being clear in front of the boss but also that HE "the tank" must also move the boss to a clear area for behind the boss for the melee to able to stand nice and clean. I do hope that you make a video about this.

Bash all you want - but I really love hunter when it comes to movement. Nowadays you can send your pet around anywhere on your screen - but even back in the day when you could only send your pet to {Attack} your target or to {Retreat} back to your side, this gave you a world of options! It makes a world of difference to sometimes send your pet to draw a mob; retreat half way back and attack from a different position so you don’t accidentally double pull. Hunter being a class that can only shoot from 8+ yards also makes for an interesting dynamic, it takes some skill to for instance put a flame trap down, shoot a mob, run a bit back (exactly 8 yards) and send your pet in so it aggros exactly when the trap is being triggered. This gets interesting in close spaces. It makes me mad when tanks don’t pull to a spot where I can safely shoot from, though I do try to compensare with more accute postitioning by being zoomed in to my character all the way.

Tip about Aggramar, on Flame Rend, if you stand right in in the center of his hitbox, you don't get knocked back as far as some melee, who stand on max melee range. In general, if a demon hunter, any knockback is eliminated if you open wings in the moment you are knocked back.

No-one does that because what he does with his hands is irrelevant to you, as everyone's keybinds are different - including movement keybinds. You would mess yourself up trying to just copy hand movement and not focusing on the skill itself.

Not needed. All you have to know is this: minimize your movement on the keyboard and keep your binds nice and clustered. Any abilities with long CDs should be kept to the side, though: nobody likes a mage who fat fingers Time Warp when it should’ve been used at a specific moment.

Doom, life tap, command demon, summon doomguard, summon darkglare, demonwrath. You do have some insta casts as demo lock. So you can still stutter step, if movement is needed and still maintain some outgoing dps. Yeah you don't have as good of a choice as other classes, and it hurts your rotation a bit more than it does for other specs. But you still have thing you can do to maintain dps or to prepare for your landing dps
@camzoman
@camzoman 6 жыл бұрын
The Shadowy Inspiration/Power Trip build is really quite good for movement actually. You fill with the shorter cast Demonic Empowerment, following it immediately with an instant Shadowbolt. This means every filler cast you get an instant cast to work with, along with the abilities WondderWaffel mentioned (with the exception of command demon which while instant cast I believe is off the GCD).

If Blizz insists that Burning Rush needs to be a talent and needs to drain us warlocks of our health, then the least they could do is merge it with the old talent Kil'Jaeden's Cunning, and let us cast while moving/dying.

I would like to throw in that there is 1 specific spec which on pure singletarget cannot always exploit Stutter Step depending on talent choices per say: Demolock. However, if you have atleast 5-8 demons up, including main pet, just channel Demonwrath and problem solved (if running Hand of Doom, otherwhise abuse your Doom refresh presses).

@camzoman
@camzoman 6 жыл бұрын
What I think you're talking about is to still use WASD as movement, but to rebind Strafe Left and Right (by default Q and E) to your A and D keys. This is because turning your character left and right with A and D ("keyboard turning") is slower than holding down your right mouse button and turning the camera by moving it with the mouse. You just don't need to be able to keyboard turn, so if you change A and D to strafe, it frees up Q and E for more useful bindings close to your default WASD hand position.

NOW i got a question, im a MM hunter every time i try to move on global cooldowns but in some cases i been facin 2 problems, if im using sidewinders second and a half with no mana too often, if im not usin that talent depending too mucho in cast the most long cast aimshot, acording to the addon "details!" im losing about 200k to 500k evey time im out of focus or when the boss (in the raid case) has to move too mucho and i jsut have 2 oportunities to cast aim shot in a 10 seg lapse, whay im doing wrong? im kajii - ragnaros us thanks for all your help with this guides

I main Rogue and DK, so I experience both ends of the mobility scale regularly. Antorus is SOO much easier for Rogue, because so many of the fights rewards mobility. Aggramar's big flame circle of death, doom, and sadness is basically a big middle finger to DKs. 'Your mobility only lasts long enough to get in or out, not both. So, enjoy a few seconds of doing nothing!' Meanwhile Rogue can just Sprint out and Shadowstep back in.

I think blizzard should tune the game and make it so that the mobile dps specs (rogue, hunter, druid, monk, mage, demon hunter) perform slightly lower damage than the slow and heavier specs (warrior, paladin, death knight, priest, warlock)

Maybe just give certain specs small damage buffs on fights they'd usually do bad on so that people can still mostly play what they like. For example, give all the classes without an invuln a damage buff for KJ.

Hey Preach, apologies ahead of time for the long post, but i need the help. What i'm hoping to get out of this series is to understand many of the little details that really good players do that make a huge difference. I want to learn this not only because i know it will help me grow as a player, but also to be so focused on those things that i may finally be able to combat my alt-aholic syndrome, by hopefully focusing on the gameplay instead of the tempting class next to me that looks so cool that i just have to try it (grass is always greener on the other side). I've been unsubbed for about 3 weeks now, partly because of a mythic+6 seat of the triumvirate. In this 6+ i was trying to overcome my fear of tanking(as of course i had re-rolled to a tank, because i always reroll). Let it also be said that i was a 926 brewmaster monk, who should literally just destroy that content. Needless to say, our group had many issues. looking back i don't know how much of it was the groups fault and how much of it was mine. But during the dungeon i felt like EVERYTHING was my fault, and i felt like everybody else in the group was thinking the same thing, that i was all my fault. We make it past the second boss and were clearing trash, and when one trash pack went especially wrong i just panicked, Alt+4'ed, turned off my pc, and left the room. I don't think i played a single online game for another week after that, at which point my sub had ran out and i was too scared to renew it. I hated this feeling and i never want to feel it again, it was the worst wow experience I've ever had. When i saw you come out with this series i decided i would resub after Christmas, and hopefully take some of the knowledge gained and work on really improving as a player as to NEVER panic like i did in that mythic plus seat, i still have been to scared to touch wow since. But i still love wow and want to play it, i just need to get better, and i honestly think of myself as a pretty decent player (if i'm dpsing), but this experience opened my eyes to the fact that I had to be more confident in wow if i want to be able to enjoy it. I want to be able to stick to one class and get good at that class as to know it well enough to not freak out when things start going wrong, I hope this series helps, because i love this game and i don't want to be scared to do more difficult content. Thank you so much for reading, I love your content, and have been watching for years

You'll naturally get a lot of pressure on you as a tank, you're one, if not the most essential part of a group. If the tank goes down, then the group will usually follow. There's only so much they can do to hault a wipe(paladins bubble+taunt. Shammys summoning earth elemental to tank. Warlocks having enough time to summon a voidwalker to tank for a while. Melee with taunts trying to tank and spamming whatever defensives/self healing they have) To prevent that from happening, you have to be proactive with your mitigation tools(or reactive in the case of a blood dk, but they still need some proactive awareness) and to be proactive you have to know nearly every ability of said encounter(ok not every single ability, but you should know every single one, that is dangerous enough to kill you. Boss' basic attacks included) best way to do this, is to start low and gradually work your way up. Start of in a normal/hc/mythic+0 dungeon(depending on how geared your tank is) notice the damage patterns, they may be too low to be any real danger, but take notice of the ones that actually touch you hp bar or leaves some debuffs on you. Then you move your way upwards, start low again, you don't want to toss in unnecessary affixes when you don't even know the basic dungeon. Notice everything, take note where basic active mitigation isn't cutting it, where it feels dangerous and plan out to use cooldowns for those parts. It is a slow and vastly big learning curve for tanks, some grasp it right away, while others can panic when they get clobbered into the dirt. But do not, go into the deep waters right away, get comfortable on the shore, start low, where mistakes don't punish you too hard. I main a healer, our group needed a tank, so I said, sure I can tank a 12 seat, it's low compared to what we usually run, so I can probably handle it. NOPE. I got killed on the first trash we pulled, pug dps'ers were flaming me and everything felt like shit. Why did it go so horribly bad? I have tanked other +12 dungeons before. Difference was the fact that I didn't know any of the tank damage intake of seat, I had healed it, sure. But that was with tanks that actually knew what they were doing. I should have gone into a normal mythic seat first, tried it out properly, and then gone to a low m+ seat key +4 to +8 range maybe, refined upon it and then I would be able to comfortable be able to tank a +12 key in the same dungeon. And do not be afraid to tell people that you're new to tanking, they can help with tips and tricks for your class, for the encounter, the healer knows to keep a more keen eye on you to help you out of bad situations, dps'ers will try and stun abilities that would hit you pretty hard and can do some pretty bonkers stuff, like pet taunt on certain bosses to keep your stacks and thus your cooldowns/active mit more comfortably under control. But most important part about tanking, thus also why it's best to start off on the low end, is to keep a clear and calm mind. you dictate the group, when no clear leader starts to emerge, you'll be the natural role that people turn to, to lead the direction of the encounter. Dear god I didn't mean for this to get so lengthy, but it hope it helps you out, and don't feel to bad about failures. Remember, masters have failed more times than the novice have even attempted. Fuckups happens in every role, only difference is that the tank ones are more noticeable. But it shows a great mindset to not be swayed by it and to pick right up and give it your best shot, trying to learn on the fly, adapting and changing strats to suit you.

brennan hawkins first and foremost: this is a game and you should aim to have fun. If fun for you is switching between alts depending on your mood, then that is completely fine. Don't think that a big KZbin personality knows more about fun than you. It's your money and time spend it how you want. If there is anything I have learned from Preach it's that being exposed can be very efficient at teaching about the game. Yes, it can uncomfortable but I value learning more than I value comfort. Besides, the more you learn the larger your comfort zone is anyway. Most of finding out what to do in situations is discovering what doesn't works. I can almost guarantee some of the best tanks will have stories about some spectacular mistakes they've made. I remember one time when I was still learning guardian druid, I was with a guildie and 3 pugs. I was so focused on getting through a +4 in the time that I completely forgot about getting enough trash mobs. We missed the time cause we had to run back through the dungeon. My point ultimately is: improving often doesn't look like success and having a go is always better than not trying.

If shit could happed it will happend. We all passed trough that feeling. Even top players make mistakes, that is how you learn. Even if only you made mistakes in that run, highly unlikely, it should be fine. Best way to overcome that fear is to get few friends to join you in these runs and even when you make mistake advice you what to do, and not to be assholes. For me, tanking is more fun then dps, unless it is a raid boss where all you do is "taunt on two sracks".

Tanks shouldn't be moving the boss unless it is required. If the tanks are constantly moving the boss where it affects the melee dps, they're doing something wrong. In most cases, the bosses only move when they need to be moved.

Preach serious question, do you heal? All 3 of these videos so far are focused 100% on being a dps, and mainly mage focused. This really isn't going to help many people, and will help out none of the healers. If this series is really meant to help, and not just try to make yourself look like a god compared to the idiots who play WoW, then focus on all roles(melee, caster dps, healers, tanks). You know how many times I've seen tanks turn their backs to a boss to move it in a raid? This is something you need to cover, it's far more important to the player base than doing 20k more dps. Healers have an entirely different problem with movement than the gcd and losing a spot on the dmg meter. If a healer has to move and they don't have one of their few instant cast heals up, a tank could die, or a few dps. This happens a lot in pugs, and is far more of an issue than DPS losing a small amount of dmg while moving. Yet, sadly, you don't instruct healers on the proper way they should handle movement in raids. You also didn't cover the most basic thing with movement, use your mouse to control the camera to turn and DONT KEYBOARD TURN. How could you leave this out of a movement tutorial? Also to not backpedal unless they're a tank thats moving a boss slowly backwards to not outrange their healers midcast. You tell people not to click, then leave out the basics of movements.

I'm not familiar with all healers, but there are some things you can do for the 3 that i am familiar with. Resto shammy has spiritwalker grace for those emergencies. You also have riptide and totems to drop as you move normally in between casts. Monks have roll/torpedo with renew mist, also the talent that lets you cast mist whilst running, then there's the tea that lets you insta cast enveloping mist. Pallies have martyr, light of dawn, holy shock, bop, lay on hands, etc, along with your steed. As for learning, I recommend practicing in higher m+'s. e.g. im still sort of learning resto shammy, and one of the VotW bosses really challenged me with movement + healing (the eye boss). Everyone was getting smashed and i'd start casting and get 1 shot by the blue blob things due to poor movement spell management and awareness. I managed to figure out how to optimize my movement (took 2 wipes) along with healing output through that. This is obviously class dependent because some have more insta-cast spells than others. Luckily, resto shammy has heaps of totems that can be dropped whilst running around. But the key is to be prepared and get to a safe place to do a cast then be prepared to run somewhere else before your next spell cast. But I do think this video very much applies to healers as well, as this video is about caster dps, not melee dps. Sure he's referring to not missing a cast because you lose dps, but as a healer, you have the luxury of a slight delay in casts. But he does state that you should be aware of what could be coming up next. If the tank is near death, and you're suddenly caught off guard by some random spell, that's on you and something that can be fixed through practice and better management of abilities and self placement/awareness.

Im a healer main, and everything hes said easily applies to healers in this video. You should know the fight well enough to know when you might need to bank insta cast heals in order to use them while moving. It is hardly rocket science. You dont and shouldnt be blowing your instant heals the moment they go off CD just because they went off cd. Every healer should understand how to predict damage and use that to their advantage. you should know when a mechanic is coming and what your going to need to do to deal with it. Just like a dps should be doing.

Save your movement CDs to keep hitting the boss... And then there is wraith walk. I hate this spell from the bottom of my heart. Hey we want to use our 'mobility' to keep waking the boss... Oh no we can't do shit while wraith walking Feels so fucking bad But with careful planning you can get around it for the most part, except e.g. Aggramar where you need to leave the boss earlier than everyone else to avoid the AoE

Kebind the strafe keys OR the ability keybindings to not interfere with each-other. I got everything on the side of my g600 mouse(think razer naga if you don't know what it is) so I can dps on my warrior to my hearth's contempt while strafing left/right. I'm guilty of doing this even when there's no reason to do so and I should rather just be stood completely still and do my rotation.

I think I have a very good way that most ppl don't know about, as melee you can delegate all the movement to the mouse (even Strafe) and free up your left hand to be fully on spell binds.. It requires some getting used to but it's so good once you do, here it is.. LeftClick: StrafeLeft, RightClick: StrafeRight, LeftClick+RightClick: Move forward, and the normal Left and Right clicks to side buttons on my naga (5 and 8). Sounds werid to move the right and left clicks but if you think about it you do a lot more moving than clicking on a fight so it actually makes sense.

No i see the logic there.. I will give that a shot.. i like the idea.. but i dont have a turn keys.. i hope down right mouse and turn... i could move what i have to the side keys to the A and the D keys as its kick and fan of knifes.. Thank you for the idea i will see how that works.
