I can understand how the lyrics can confuse or make it seem like there's no point, but there's an aspect of hip hop that is about improvisation and coming up with rhymes on the fly for the sake of displaying your "flow." I think this song is a good example of that concept.

Its like a cypher. They're throwing hooks and rhymes at each other to pick up on. Its pure hip hop, talk about your name, neighborhood, maybe talk some shit and pass the mic.

And no you're not missing anything when hip-hop first started and MCS first started rapping it was just about how clever you can be off the top of your head when you were in a battle Circle because both of these groups were very important and the history of the culture they kind of just took it back and paid homage to where it all started that's why it sounds random because they're all just making stuff up as they go without missing a Beat

I like this one...Just straight spitting rhymes. A really good one is Sure Shot but it is well known but classic BB. On their last album To the 5 Boroughs, from 2004 they have a song called "An Open Letter to NYC" that is really good.

Lmfao you guys looked beyond bored on this one. The popularity of this song is based on the collaboration which was unexpected at the time. Sometimes it's just about random rhymes, the beat and the chemistry which this song has and is fun. Mid/ lates 90's, alternative/ electro rock night at the club everyone would go crazy for this song because alt rock fans loved the Beasties and people who weren't normal rap fans still loved Tribe for some reason. It's the combo. Another great cross genre combo is Limp Bizkit with Method Man "N Together Now". Though please watch the video if you do that one sometime.
