Thank Michael for such a DETAILED & INFORMATIVE video. I’ve watched more than 5 videos regarding this subject and yours is the BEST. It’s because the details of the information that you cover. All the other videos do not show step by step of playback settings, etc. like yours.

I tend to run different options for render cache, optmized media and proxy media. For Render Cache, I use ProRes 422 HQ, so if and when I want to export a timeline that has been mostly cached, I can enable "use render cache" during the export and it will use cached video during the export, and I'm not loosing on quality. Optimized Media I tend to push to ProRes 4444 HQ (12 bit) for when I feel the need to optmize a raw clip to a nearly lossless prores codec with the expectation that I'm doing color work off the optimized footage I've optimized in the timeline. Optimzied media has the advantage of being able to optimize on the footage that is in use. Proxy Media, I use ProRes Proxy, and build these in advance. Its easy to make them on most projects, and significantly improves performance during the editorial focused time in the project.

I edit 360 video almost exclusively and now with the new Insta360 X4 camera with 8k30. For a long time I would export stitched videos from the Insta360 Studio as H265 and bring it into Davinci for further work. No problem even for 5.7k60 clips. The new 8k clips would kill Davinci almost instantly! Tried changing all sorts of parameters to no avail - until you said the decode from H265 was a hog. So I stitched and exported the 8k30 from Insta360 Studio in H264, brought the clips into Davinci and BINGO I could do more work and export in H265. Many thanks for that super helpful tip.

Render in place my friend. For any heavy compound clips with heavy effects I try to lean on render in place so that the output stage is quick and efficient.
