This video gives you lots of education for improving walking and introducing slip leads and a head harness to your dog.

Thank you! That was really helpful. I have an 11 month-old chocolate lab who is going through a stubborn phase. Walking on a leash around a short distance in our area or in our yard he does okay, but if we go anywhere that is highly stimulating (with dogs, people or lots of new smells) all our hard work totally disappears! I have just started using a slip lead at the breeder's recommendation and came across your video when searching for how to use a slip lead. I also purchased a larger Gentle Leader (head harness) as he had outgrown the one we had used for a few weeks during obedience classes (and he seemed to get past needing it for a while, but is back needing something to really get him more focused on me and becoming a better walker and have better leash manners overall. You had a lot of great tips. I'm sure I will watch this several times and share it with a couple of his littermates' owners that I am friends with. Thanks again!

Hi Jason. My 4.5 month old standard poodle is a going concern, your vids are helping for sure and thank you for that. When i watch your "reactive" dogs multiply that by 10 with mine but she only wants to say hello and play! Not mean spirited at all just wayyyyyyy overly friendly. I was getting rope burns in my hands from holding her back lol The "cuteness" grows old pretty quick. She's about 30 lbs and I can't believe how strong. My last poodle that i sadly had to put down some months ago (16.5 yo) was very timid and such a different dog in comparison. I did hope this one would be a bit more bold, boy did i get one!!! lol I got her a slip lead a few days ago and have seen where they cross it under the neck and loop it over the nose, which i tried and the over the nose trick does really seem to make a big difference. I'm unsure about the crossing under the neck and over the nose - not sure that's safe and the material is rope like not flat. I'm going to go ahead and order the halti. Anyway, thank you again, really appreciate your videos! Very informative and i feel like you and i are on the same page as far as training goes and having control over your dog. Oh, also - in the house off leash, if i ask her to come, she mostly just lays down and looks at me , i try to lure her with food, if i put the food down and walk away she'll go get it but she's not that interested in coming to get it from my hand. Any suggestions?

People don't realise that if a dog is constantly pulling a flat collar, it can do just as much damage as a slip lead. If you have a puller and not a good handler the gentle leader is definitely more humane than a flat collar.

Thank you! Finally a video showing us exactly what to do! I also agree with your position on sometimes having to “discipline” your dog; tell them no, etc. R+ training is great but it’s equivalent to the “every kid gets a trophy” approach 😂

Wow! What a difference to the beginning of this video. He learned quickly. I was looking for videos with slip leashes yesterday and found your channel. I have a 9.5 months old Australian Cattle Dog female. I've tried so many techniques and collars, leashes and she just does not care and pulls hard. I walked her with a slip leash this morning and it was quite a nice walk. But she's a very stubborn dog. I might have to give the head halter a try too. Thanks for putting out these videos. I like your teaching style. Hey, I'm from Canada, my daughter lives in NSW but I have yet to visit there.

PS She's also the first dog we've trained without treats just with praise and her favorite toys. We've had 8 dogs before her trained with treats and non of them have learned as fast or listened as well as she has. She gets excited when I take out her favorite toy because she knows it's playtime and forgets that at the same time she's also learning. It's amazing and exciting to work with her. My old guy (almost 13 years GSD mix) will not do anything for me unless he knows I have a treat in my hand.

Just watched your video…thank you! I have a 3 year old lab and we have just moved to a place where we need to do more leash walking. I have been using a prong but would like to try the slip leash. If the slip leash works, is it necessary to use the head harness? or can i just stick with the slip leash until I can go to the flat collar?

My black lab, Ragnar, is like a little tank at 5 (almost 6) months old, and while he’s not the worst puller he still has a habit of trudging ahead a bit too fast. Been slowly getting him used to the head harness (about 10 minutes a day since he was a little too weirded out at first) and it immediately made a difference. But yeah, he thinks everyone and everything is his friend, so gotta nip the pulling in the butt now. Also, love your explanation on lead pressure with the slip!

Hi mate, so should we be using a slip lead instead of a flat collar for training?
@jasonharrisdogtraining2 жыл бұрын
Yes I would be

You can just stick to a slip leash, no problem at all
