Theologically, I am horrified. This song is complete heresy. Uncertainty or resistance to fulfilling his mission? That's not in Christian scripture. Christs resentment and rebellion against his Father's will, as portrayed in the song, WRONG. Jesus feeling abandoned by God? NO. His freaking out about the necessity of his sacrifice? He's presented as resentful and rebellious, but ultimately acceptful. His will is the Fathers will, this song is horrible in representing the Biblical and historical person of Christ. It's a great song in terms of artistry, I do actually like it, and I'm blown away by the singing. But this song is complete heresy.
@annah.46346 ай бұрын
@@dimanosov5393 "That's not in Christian scripture" I doubt you have read those scriptures. Read the Evangelium once more, if you forgot what exactly is written there.
@dimanosov53936 ай бұрын
@@annah.4634 The song is all "me me me me". It portrays Jesus as a narcissist who doesn't understand Gods plan of the cross, and presenting him as if he's some victim of a capricious diety. Yes, Jesus was troubled. The human body tends to begin freaking out and releasing chemicals when death is imminent. However, not once in scripture did Jesus make any demands for this cup to be taken away from him. He was begging the Father that if there was any other way this could be done, other than what he'd have to go through, if it was possible, but in the end he acknowledged it was the Father's will. His trouble was taking on Gods wrath onto himself, but "I can do nothing on My own initiative As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." The last few words of the song "Before I change my mind" contradicts this scripture Gods will was his will, as the Son of the Father. If Jesus was to ask the Father of anything, the Father would have immediately saved his life, and therefore there would be no salvation for mankind. I stand with what I said initially. This song is a theological heresy, and it's presenting Christ as if he was a fallen, sinful human rather than the incarnate son of God. Yes, the song is fantastic, and the singer is amazing, but it's heretical

John Legend didn't even try to hit that high G. He knew he couldn't do it. While I was somewhat impressed with John Legend's performance, and I am NOT a John Legend fan, Ted Neeley did a production of Jesus Christ Superstar during 2018-2019 with Corey Glover doing the part of Judas, that hands down buried the John Legend production in the proverbial dust. Ted Neeley at 76 years of age did this song on Broadway on opening night, after not singing the song for years, he didn't even sing it during rehearsals, that will most likely stand the test of time as being the best performance of this song by anyone ever. It was so good I felt as though I had literally been levitated out of my seat.

Acting-wise, my favourite Jesus. It's like the others treat it as a series of songs (too busy bopping along to the beat to pay any real attention to the meaning of the lyrics - we're all guilty of it), but he sees it as dialogue that happens to be sung... The acting itself may be a bit OTT at times, but I can forgive that as he's obviously more accustomed to performing for a theatre audience than film cameras and the two are very different (and I can be a bit dense, so subtlety isn't always my friend)

In both this and the 73 version, something is portrayed in this song. Through whatever magical means, Jesus saw his own execution coming, in detail, and it turned him into a mass of depression. If you knew, not thought, but KNEW that in the following days you'd be flogged, tortured, then eventually executed it'd really take the wind out of your sails. Then, as portrayed in this song, Jesus looks to God and says "Why me? Give me one good reason why I gotta go through this crap!"

I will give Glenn the credit for giving his all and clearly showing a lot of emotion in a very emotional moment. But his voice wasn't rockstar enough for Jesus. Jesus never has a moment to himself until now and he's supposed to blow you away with not only with his incredible acting but with a powerhouse rock voice

Gethsemane is my favourite song in Jesus Christ Superstar

Honestly this song isn’t supposed to be a rockstar song. It’s a prayer. According to the Bible, this song is based on Jesus’s prayer at Gethseme when he asked why God chose him to die. This is the moment where Jesus is at his most vulnerable state and Glenn in my opinion portrayed Jesus’ vulnerability very beautifully. He may not be up to the same standards of other portrayals of Jesus in terms of his voice, but the fact that he showcases this level of emotion within his performance makes Glenn my favorite portrayal of Jesus. Because having a good voice in musical theater is only half the battle.

Helena Koerner this is a rock portrayal of the Bible, so this song is supposed to be a rockstar

Owen Myers okay. Maybe through this musical alone but I feel like that this movie wanted to see portray Jesus as realistic as possible and not go for that rockstar angle with him. And to that extent he did well with this song.

Helena Koerner The musical is written to be a rock opera, hence why most other actors in this portrayal have more rock style voices

I love Andrew Lloyd Webber ~ Best production. We had a discussion in Uni, What would happen if this occurs again. We concurred, the same. I am not sure if I would buy another production. This speaks to me. Incredible the remarks on such a tremendous Artist as Andrew Lloyd Webber who has filled stages, cinemas and thrilled audiences for years. Flippant and uneducated are people.

I've performed this musical as Jesus in two semi-pro productions at different points in my life. I always based it on Ian Gillan's version. He was the original and cannot be touched - especially as he was responsible for introducing the Deep Purple screams into this song.

I'm sorry to say, but I don't feel the emotion in Gillan's version as I do here. Gillan just sings it. Carter plays a role. He has depth, emotion, you can actually feel the pain and torture. It does something Gillan could never do- reach your heart and squeeze it, bring you to tears.

@@juliacher1987 yes, this guy was performing but Gillan had to deliver in a cold recording studio
