Things sure have changed since I served (1956-1961). I wanted to stay in but was frozen at E-3. No one in my career field made E-4 for the entire time I was in. After five years I said to hell with it after extending for one year and got out. Soon thereafter Viet Nam broke out and promotions were handed out like candy.

1. Kyle: first I want to congratulate you on getting a line number for SSG. Frankly, because of your atitude in that first video i figured you were sunk. Obviously because of your ethic there was more going for you, so I congratulations you fully SSG Gott. 2. ALS is no big deal so don't sweat it. It's not BMT just a basic review of what is required of an NCO. While it is a formal school its nothing to sweat about. 3. I want you to realize now that you are one step away from applying to MTI or Recruiter school a place where you could really make a sound difference with your motivational attitudes and skills as to the right way to do your job Consider applying for that position once you sew on the stripe. You have said many times that you wanted to motivate people in the right way well here is your chance. Think it over carefully. Think of all the airman you could influence. Again my congratulations on your promotion, SSG Gott..

Congratulations on your promotion! The testing that you took was only for Active Duty. Being in the AF Reserve, the only way to get SSgt is obtaining your 5-skill level and taking the ALS CDC test/in residence course. The TIG and TIS also applies. This is a quicker process since those in the Reserve do not have line numbers for promotion.

When I was in. I enlisted for 6 yrs. After all my basic aviation electronics schools. I was E-4 1 1/2 yrs in. Promoted to E-5 at about 3 yrs in after 2 test cycles. Re upped for another 6 yrs. Took the test and past it every cycle I was eligible until the end of my 2nd 6 yrs. In my branch of the service (Navy) they would promote very few. 1 or 2 a cycle. Hard to make rank when there are 100s to choose from. One of the reasons I didn't enlist again and I was a single father after my wife past. When I got out I decided not to go into electronics. It's good that your putting an effort in to get promoted. Anything and every thing can convert over to a resume. Good luck on making it through the rest of your enlistment.

We in the Marines call it selected to the next higher rank... E-6 thru E-9... it takes up to a year to pin your stripes on, but some senior Marines get it faster, depending on their number. Your not promoted until your number comes up, then you pin in on, and your promoted, if you screw up.. you will never see the promotion..

Good on ya young airman. Being a lifer like me or not, testing for promotion is a good idea even if just for the money. Kadena has always been a decent tour. I passed through a couple of times back in the ancient times, but not stationed there. Took me not quite 4 to make SSgt and then 3 more to Tech and on up. They used to call ours APR rather than EPR but the principle was the same. Promotions during Vietnam era a bit easier for what was Security Service, now called ISR 25thAF now.

Hey Kyle. I'm leaving for BMT on September 20th and going in Open Electronic because I have no idea what I want to do with my life and that is what sounded most interesting. I want to leave the Air Force with a valuable skill I can take advantage of in the civilian world. Anyways, the job I'm looking to put on the top of my list is Avionics Systems and some other maintenance jobs. I have been told that these jobs often have long hours, and I wouldn't mind that at all but I also want to take as many college classes as I can while I'm in. I'm conflicted between choosing a maintenance job for the valuable skills it will give me in the outside world but not having enough time for classes, or choosing a job with standard 8 hour shifts and having more than enough time for school. Any advice you could give me on this either from general experience or from a buddy you have in electronic maintenance on avionics I would appreciate greatly!

Congrats! Just started tech school at Lackland, so I didn't even realize that was coming up for you. I disagree with the comments below urging you towards MTI. It would definitely unprecedented, what with every airman coming in having watched your packing list video at least once, and knowing who you are. It seems that they would already have such a good grasp on your character and the ins and outs of your public life, that they may not quite take you seriously. Whatever you choose, good luck and congratulations once again!

I'm in a similar situation to yours, except I'm planning to commission if selected in the next FY17 Rated board and FY17 non rated board. I enlisted for 6 years but recently got selected for SSGT 25 Aug and I've only been in 3.5 years. Everyone looks down on the fact that I have a bachelors in Electrical Engineering and chose to enlist and the fact that I tried to make staff even though I'm applying the same year in two boards for officer. The point is exactly what you stated, " I signed a 6 year contract and it's my job to do my best". If selected for a pilot I'll do 30-40 years . If not then I'll do 16 more. Try and reconsider reenlisting because the Air Force needs more people like you. I've been around some grade A dirtbags in my 3.5 years. You seem like a 4 but this new system is Trash. I got a 3 and some others got 4 and 5 that didn't deserve it. They still didn't make it and my line is 11,365, which is good and bad because if I'm picked up for OTS then I'll never actually sew on

This video is misleading. You didn't actually become a staff sergeant (E-5) until about 10 months after this. You were just a staff sergeant select (i.e., senior airman). You're not an E-5 until those stripes are punched on your shoulder. Getting a line number means you're picked to go to ALS. After passing both tests at ALS, it's about a month before the paperwork is processed and *_then_* you get promoted.

Congratulations Kyle, outstanding job! They messed with me too, I was called off post to see the Commander of the squadron, the First Sergeant whom was a friend of mine made it even more convincing. He told me the Colonel wanted to see me because the storm windows of my room in the barracks were broken from the inside out implying I broke them. I was the Dorm Chief at the time, only the first sergeant had a key to my room. Funny thing was the flight chief had asked me to take his truck to POL to have it washed and refueled. In driving to POL I passed my barracks, my room was right by the road, second story, I could see the windows plainly, everything was fine. The First Sergeant said I was in deep trouble, that the Colonel was NOT happy. My first thought was I would loose Sergeant to be demoted to Senior Airman. I call the flight chief to meet me before I have to see the commander, he made up an excuse (he was in on it too) that he could not be there. Finally I walk with the First Sergeant into the Colonel's Office, Colonel Wilder said, I don't know what I am going to do with you Sgt Miller, then gave me time to think I was in really deep trouble. He then put out his hand and shook mine congratulating me on my promotion to Staff Sergeant, handing me the Orders for my promotion (line number) and the first set of the chevrons. I was elated, but turned to the First Shirt and vowed payback for his part in it. He simply laughed, shook my hand and asked me to return to my post. The windows were never broken! This was August 1981. I was promoted 1 October 1981. The first Sergeant was a Senior Master Sergeant and was also promoted to Chief in the same cycle! I think I was in the second cycle with a line number of 2875.

@GM8101PHX7 жыл бұрын
Kyle was promoted to E-3 Airman First Class right out of Basic Training, then if he didn't make any big mistakes he was automatically promoted to E-4 Senior Airman two years after Basic, he then passed the two tests with time in grade and time in service with enough points to be promoted to Staff Sergeant. Took me three times testing which we did two times every year.

Is ALS going to be in Las Vegas? When my husband had to write evaluations I remember that one of the reasons he hated to rate anyone too low or too high was because he was then required to write out the reason why they deserved that mark. That is a pain if you are evaluating a lot of people.
