Jeremy and Melissa, It just makes my heart ache to see how much love you emanate while working together. The work you two are doing is excruciating, I’m sure... yet you still have smiles on your faces. It will be wonderful to see your hard work reflected in your future bounty. I think maybe you should build one of those neat off grid hot tubs or saunas I’ve seen on other channels. All that lifting!!!! Please take care of yourselves. You need to stay healthy to get this homestead completed! Hugs to the kiddos.

Fun to play with the tractor, isn't it? When my wife found how much fun it was to operate my 55 hp tractor, I had to get her a smaller one(34hp). You could use the loader and a chain to move the ties. Have you learned how to back blade with the bucket? It will give a smooth surface. It's great that you could take advantage of the weather. Expect mother nature to make up for it in the coming weeks. Park that beautiful tractor next to or in the barn. If you get a blizzard, you will be glad you did. Good video. Good Luck, Rick

We used Railroad Ties to border the flower/shrubbery beds to keep the woodchips in and the driveway to keep the rocks out of the lawn. We thought they would be rot resistant and bugs wouldn't like them. Boy were we wrong! Every grass seed and stray root just had to grow up between them and every ant, beetle and even bees thought they were great. They only lasted a few years before they were rotted through and full of bugs despite using insecticide on them. Hope you have better luck with them as far North as you are.

Loved watching you two work together n have fun while working even though I know it is very tiring work. It brings back sweet memories when my sweet husband and I did the same sort of things. Very hard work but very rewarding. After 57 sweet years my constant companion n sweet husband had to leave me behind to build things in heaven. I will one day meet him there n never part again. Meanwhile I live on all the years of memories we made together with our four children, 14 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. You have the right idea about what's important and precious in life. Just wish more people realized it before it is to late. There is nothing money can buy that will give you more pleasure and satisfaction than working and playing together with your beautiful family. You are inspiring!!!

i use to work for a logging/ lumber company that made green railroad ties. I by myself worked the cant line. the center of the tree usually 4 inches thick 6 inches wide and varying lengths 6 to 16 ft long and RR TIES . Now for 6 months I had to drag the ties off the line onto a cart 4 wide and 5 high. no easy feat. one day the plant supervisor came in and he tried doing it and he is a young strapinglad yet could barely budge them. the next day maintenance was cutting a hole in my building and welding up a roller set to roll them outside. now what im getting at is big props to her for handling those so well.

I’m impressed that she can lift those railroads ties. I made a raised bed with them years ago by myself. It was all I could do to carry one. The hardest part was dragging them to where I could load them off of an old railroad they had just taken up. I found lots of tools that they lost. They had left the area and I didn’t know who they were. I’ve still got the tools. That was over 30 years ago.

Watched well over a dozen of your vids since you moved. Followed your pole barn and tiny house build. Admire your tenacity and courage. Especially like when you pointed out the difference between "a dream" & "a goal": "You wake up from one; while the other is ongoing". Really insightful and true. Glad you're not using the RR ties anywhere near your edible gardens. There are still too many people out there who are unaware or dismiss the toxicity of creosote/arsenic laden RR ties anywhere near their edible gardens. Even non edibles. Once that toxic combo in the ties start to leach into the soil, that's it, plus it can destroy the plants as well. Stay well & strong. May your physical strength continue to match your personal inner strength. Jay

On man, we use rail road ties and they are HEAVY :-O We are able to get a few free ones from time to time. So useful to shore up our field stone boundary walls that are crumbling with age and stress from the bulldozer that excavated the foundation. I want to take the rest and use them for hillside raised beds after they are lined with heavy mil plastic. One difference being, my hubby is 75 and we can't get a tractor in to load the ties. Good job guys! That is a honey of a tractor! It can be fun to learn as you go. Our vintage tractors and vehicles are beginning we wear. My 2004 Tacoma is mysteriously leaking oil right up to the front end! Ruby is my pride and joy and usually dependable.Calling the garage today. Always something :-)

Friends, have you considered getting a flat bed trailer? Now that you have the tractor with forks on it .. it would make your work much easier I believe.. especially if your going to be hauling most of your building materials for your home

are those really railroad ties? If so, haven't they been treated with creasote? If so, not something you want to use in the garden.

You are absolutely right. They are covered in creosote.. A toxic wood preservative. Fine for walls driveway liners but not for any garden.

I highly recommend you stake the RR ties to keep them in place from frost heaves and the inevitable equipment hits. I use 2 feet of 3/8ths inch rebar through drilled holes, hammered home with a 2 pound hand sledge.....a good job for mighty mouse after she recovers from moving them.....while the hard working man enjoys a cold one or two. As I'm sure you are figuring out, life would be easier if you picked up a clunker flatbed trailer/car carrier that would allow you to lift things like RR ties, timbers, pallets of building material directly off the trailer with the forks. I also haul mulch on one using old apple crates that match up with the forks on my tractor, allowing me to place 2 cubic yards at a time right where I want it. As you go full bore homestead it only makes sense to save your bodies wherever you can since you will have plenty of chances to abuse them regardless and the phrase you ain't getting any younger takes on a new and more immediate meaning.

There are 2 these that i hope will help you. One, when moving the railroad ties leave your forks up and when you put them down you put them directly on the force and they're not on the ground you're not bending back over saving energy it is a lot better on your back and also on your legs. 2 and these is the most important is when you're on the tractor do not leave your foot near the clutch unless you are pushing it in even just putting it just a little bit on the the clutch pedal can get your clutch to slip and will burn it out and that is a very expensive teardown because you have to split the tractors on most. Now i love the love you 2 have. So sweetie and i love it
