Panasonic Australia loaned me a Lumix S1 24 megapixel full-frame camera for a trial run. I have only had limited time so far but really enjoying getting to know this camera and seeing what it can do. Here's a look at the essential camera design, and I'm also sharing a selection of my first photos with exposure settings. Enjoy and be sure to SUBSCRIBE!

Thanks Andrew: owning a G9, I appreciate your review and comparison with the G9. There is a lot to like here except maybe the extra weight. I'm a little torn as the Micro 4/3 weight was one of my reasons for selecting the G9.

I have the G9 and the S5. My main field of photography is morning walks in the Black Forrest at the time of sunrise with my two dogs. That is low light most of the time. Especially when shooting the dogs with appropriate shutter speeds. In such situations the S5 produces very good images even at 25600 ISO. With the DXO Pure Raw denoiser, even 51200 ISO is acceptable. So now my G9 collects dust and I probably will sell it.

Great camera! (and informative video, as usual)

Thanks for this excellent minimal review, Andrew! Other than the ISO and the associated values (low light) were there any shots you felt that you could not have accomplished with the G9? I don't know how long you've had the camera but, your shots were outstanding!

Well thank you very much. To answer your question I can't make a serious comparison because I don't have an equivalent wide angle lens for my G9. And I don't think it's a matter of 'could not have accomplished with the G9.' More that with the extra dynamic range and larger sensor overall, you can see more detail and the detail holds together better when blown up to 100%. And you really can't take the ISO performance out of the equation...there's an ocean sunset shot there taken at 3200 ISO to maintain a fast shutter speed to freeze the wave. I probably would not have tried to take that shot on the G9.

@@naturesimagephotography Excellent point! I guess the Panasonic 8x18 would be a close to that 16-35 you could get. Looking forward to you furthering these reviews and such...hoping you'll delve even further into the Lumix lineup!

Thank you. I am struggling with being unable to travel at the moment - until the end of 2019 touring was half my income. So I can't afford to buy a lot of gear right now, which is why I am so happy to have this opportunity. I do hope Panasonic continues to take an interest and I get to play with more toys...

I loved this camera, but I had to sell it to then buy an S5. I absolutely could not stand that I'd have spend AUD 300-400 dollars on an XQD card and another AUD350 on unlocking vlog, on top of what was already a very pricey body to begin with. The positives are that it s a phenomenal camera. Colours and tones didn't need much tweaking in Lightroom, and I even stopped Ising presets because I loved the glossy and detailed, editorial look it rendered (I shoot merchandising editorials and portraits).

The S1 has pre-burst, Andrew?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does, but only in 4K/6K shooting...unlike the G9 which has pre-burst shooting for full-sized RAW photos. And (full disclosure) I haven't tried it as I have only been shooting landscapes, so I will tell you what I have observed in the menu. For BURST MODE 1 and BURST MODE 2 you can choose to assign 4K/6K, along with High, Medium and Low burst shooting. Further down in the menu there is a section for 4K/6K options, and you can select pre-burst in there. So you have to go to two different places in the menu to set it up, but it does indicate that pre-burst is available, only for 4K/6K.

@@naturesimagephotography Thnaks for your answer, Andrew. I've preordered the Sony A7 IV for wildlife, along with the 200-600mm, for the AF and lowlight capabilities. Maybe I'll hang on to my G9 (with 200mm f2.8) for the pre-burst, which I love.

A really nice review. I like that Panasonic keep most of the button placement the same layout, the menu does look like an improvement over the G9. As my photography is mainly Wildlife and there aren’t many/any? decent long lenses for Panasonic FF I’ll happily stick with my G9, but if I were Landscape or Portrait then an upgrade to the S5 would be tempting. Currently if I wanted FF for Wildlife it would have to be Canon R6 or R5 as they have an excellent zoom lens to complement the camera. Really stunning images here 👏

Thanks for all of the above. I agree with your comments on wildlife. If I could have my wish-list, I would have the S1 or S5 for landscapes, and continue using the G9 for wildlife and portraits. So when I start traveling again I would love to go with the setup I have right now. Unfortunately I have to give this camera back...

If I bought a Lumix S, it would be the S1R (or successor). If I bought a lens for it, it would be the cheapest L mount prime I could find. I would buy an adaptor, so I can use my TS-E lenses. I popped my 5Ds on the scales. No lens, battery and CF card, 976 grams. I am not sure the 100 or so grams difference is relevant.

There's definitely appeal in the higher megapixels of the S1R, but there are some advantages also to the 24mpx sensor of the S1. I am yet to try out the high-res mode which creates a 95mpx image. That will be interesting...
