John Williams said in an interview once that this was the ONLY film he actually requested to score. Most of time, he is the one being asked. He said he read the book in 1997 and the music immediately came to him and he held onto it, knowing that if it was ever made into a film, he would want to do the score.

My all time favorite movie...it's breathtakingly beautiful, deeply melancholic, lyrical and hauntingly old world....there is a permanent ache in my heart after watching this movie. Book is even more poignant.

The OST of Memoirs of a Geisha is one of the best of all time. John Williams plumbed the depths of Chiyo/Sayuri 's character with this score. Mint fresh even now.

Sayuri’s theme makes me happy, sad, emotional and proud of Sayuri’s journey at the same time. John Williams’ theme is outstanding! Probably the most emotional of all music scores.

Dare I say Slatkin is better with the Detroit Symphony than he was with St. Louis? Yes, I dare. I was never a particularly big fan of Leonard Slatkin, thought he was a bit overrated, but I have to say, I have heard some magnificent performances by him with the Detroit SO here on YT, and they are fantastic, some of the best I've heard for the particular work. Chabrier's Espana, which is a real beast to play well and can easily end up as a trainwreck, along with Copland's Rodeo(or was it Billy the Kid), are both excellent performances. This video itself is another prime example, while it's not quite Sayuri's theme as I like it, I mean, it's not the end credits version, it is still amazingly well played, such that the beauty and the quality of sound rivals that of the OST.

Hi GGbreizh, do you have a video performance of John Williams' Seven Years in Tibet theme? It's one of my favorites, and it's hard to find a really good recording/performance of it here, but I know you upload high-quality performances of the maestro's works.

Sounds like original Williams orchestration?
@GGbreizh4 жыл бұрын
I just checked and you're right. But weirdly enough, I definitely remember another orchestra version (for some reason I totally forgot the flute solo at the beginning and the beautiful bits of flutes and percussions around 3:20). The version I had in mind was in fact very dull compared to the reality. That's why I thought it was a new orchestration. It must be the fault of the new arrangement of this theme for violin!!
