You forgot Calbee HOT & SPICY chips! They have the regular ones and the ridged ones, ridged ones are so classic that i crave them when im overseas keropok means cracker in malay/bahasa indonesia Belinjau is actually a fruit, thats mashed dried then fried. Some people dont like the bitter taste so some have even coated them in the sambal sugar mix like the tapioca one you tried. Malay families usually have these snacks readily available at home esp during hari raya so one would eat it with the tapioca/tapioca sambal/fish crackers in different permutations. Its a good side snack next to the sweet kuihs one would serve it with too. The bottom of your list is actually the top favourites for my parents and grandparents due to the history these snacks have before branded snacks came in like calbee, meiji etc tapioca snacks are pretty common due to the long history of tapioca during the kampong days. Last time families would grow more tapioca than potatoes. Tapioca is pretty cheap and readily available. My family in past would just boil it and eat with fresh sambal. I really appreciate that you tasted the unconventional yet traditional snacks rather than just the popular ones. I enjoy your videos! I can't wait for you to try kuih raya which are traditional sweet biscuits/pastries served during the hari raya aidilfitri period

Ohhh yea, the Roller Coaster potato snacks~ Back in the day we used to wear them like rings and pretend to propose to each other HAHAHAH. There's another potato snack that you can find in Singapore, its almost white, and it looks like little wheels. They're very light and crispy. Those are good if you can find the correct brand (some brands don't season them as nice). Its lightweight, you can eat the entire packet without feeling full (I've accidentally overeaten on many occasions) Speaking of Muruku, there are actually many other types of muruku, I personally love that one you were trying, and the smaller bright orange one, and the big swirly one, so maybe you'll want to try them once the circuit breaker lifts. =D Wait, have you tried the Gem Biscuits? Those were basically the childhoods of so many Singaporeans, ahhhh the nostalgia... Salted Egg Fish skin was raging in Singapore for awhile, for some reason, the taste of salted egg matches so well with fish skin. I know there are potato chip versions out there, but for me, the fish skin version is always the nicest. As for the berlinjau crackers, sometimes we call it Emping. There are some that are coated in a sweet chilli sauce. Actually, I think its difficult to find in Singapore, but in Indonesia, they sell un-fried Emping. So people literally fry it fresh at home and lightly salt it. I believe it tastes a lot nicer fresh because sometimes Emping, if left too long, the oil its fried in can go rancid, and with its already mild taste, bad oil is the last thing you'd want to taste when enjoying snacks. Also, for the white rabbit milk candy, that translucent paper is actually rice paper.

Belinjau crackers are traditionally eaten with sambal chilli as a snack before meals. The prawn rolls are a must-have for Chinese New Year celebrations. If you dun quite enjoy fish crackers (aka keropok), you can try the prawn or lobster flavoured ones.

The white rabbit candy and many other snacks have been around since I was a kid in the 70s! Haha i love watching your sorta analytical objective take. Very insightful and interesting to see someone’s reaction to the snacks that i grew up with. Especially from Japan. Because i love how Japanese culture is so proper with honne and tatemae but i get this casual, real and polite reaction. I also love the last part especially, the durian mochi. Taste very artificial but its $3 sooooo.... shoganai! Wahahaha ahhhh circuit breaker and fasting so here i am watching people eating snacks....Shikata Ga Nai

Oooh these are the supermarket snacks, but when the covid situation is over you should visit biscuit king along upper thomson road, it does all of the traditional biscuits and snacks that Singaporeans used to eat like ice gem biscuits and potato wheels, almost everything is nostalgia heaven in there, plus try their tapioca chips in strip shape and you'll understand the appeal of tapioca chips xD

Belinjo nut crackers (Emping) has a bitter aftertaste but those who likes it find them addictive, especially the type that coated with chillies and sugar. Another addictive snack is Lay's potato chips in salt and vinegar flavour. You can hardly stop until you finished at least half the packet once you started.

All the snacks are imported. Mostly from Malaysia. Some from Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. It makes business sense as the costs are so much lower in those countries than producing them in Singapore. Hence the low price when buying them at our local stores. My favourite is the emping belinjau @6:09 Belinjau tree species can reach up to 20 m in height and populations in the wild are Critically Endangered in Singapore. However the trees are grown along the roadsides in huge numbers. The kernel of the seed is flattened, dried and fried into a crisp known as emping or emping belinjau, which are often flavoured to be salty, sweet or slightly spicy, as the crisp tastes bitter on its own.
@boyboiboi23174 жыл бұрын

Belinjau is usually eaten as a side dish with Nasi Padang. You can eat it as a snack but it gets bitter but as a dish with Nasi Padang chicken gravy and rice it’s the bomb.
