Save yourself from the scrolling down on the comments. Here is the summary on this comment section in an hour since trailer was released. People complaining about how the plot is cliche, how the trailer spoiled the whole movie, and how Scarlett Johansson exudes too many emotions for her to play Major Kusanagi. Conclusion you either watch the film or you don't you decide, don't let others opinions shape your decisions to do things that you do or don't want to do. If you hate the trailer don't watch it, if you love the trailer watch it, if your friend hates it but you want to watch it and they shame you for your opinion then screw them and go watch the movie alone, life is about learning from good and bad experiences .

Idk about this man... it's a perfect interpretation to the anime on a visual aspect, but spiritually it seems to be going somewhere else. Sure there's the reconizable shots from the O.M. but that could end up being confusing because they seem to be going with a different narrative and plot. And then there's the issue with Kusanagi's character arc. I understand for cinema/Hollywood sake they want to give her an origins story but she doesn't need one. Part of her attraction was her mistique, her unexplained mythos. You ruin a good portion of her when you try to explain it. But who knows maybe it'll be handled well. maybe not. We'll see.

I don't think it is even a good visual interpretation. GitS depicted a world that had influences from different time periods. The city featured both traditional cultural aspects like geishas, open air markets and then have holographic ads and robotic limbs. This movie just looks like some futuristic background you could find in any stock sci fi action movie.

It's been awhile since I watched the original stuff, but I always found the music haunting, the visuals arresting, the themes curious, but the story a convoluted mess. So if they've grounded it a bit more I wouldn't hold it against it. The idea of sentient conscience living through a vast, world wide digital network was so forward thinking at the dawn of the internet, but at this point a little overdone. Hopefully it can do something original and poignant still with the oft used themes.

Am I the only one wondering WHY we're going through the whole "who am I" quandary with the Major? For one thing, the first Ghost in the Shell animated movie left questions about her identity and humanity as nice open questions for the viewers to ponder. The Stand Alone Complex series pretty much solidified her as just a good old Japanese woman who had extensive "cyberization" procedures, nothing too mindblowing. Why are the writers of the movie seemingly making Motoko Kusanagi into this "tortured soul without identity" type? It's been done before. She's the Major, not Robocop.

Whoa, they really mauled the story. Section 9 is a villainous organization a lá Hydra-subverted Shield who stages accidents and recruits the victims as their cyborg pawns? Let me guess, Kuze is a former agent who found out the truth and went on a revenge spree? That's a big stepdown from his original who was a mere puppet of an intelligence officer orchestrating a refugee crisis to turn into a civil war, but then hijacked the plan and became the revolutionary leader of the refugees. But we can't have all that brainy stuff in our summer blockbustah, can we? Let's go with a cookie-cutter "good guys are really the bad guys" plot, and remove all that talky crap like Kuze discussing Marxist dialectic with Aramaki's hobo brother. I mean, what would GitS be if you burdened it with philosophy?

I'm not a big fan of the original Anime but at least it was pretty unique.

Actually, this movie is the source of them all. Most of western SciFi movies, ranging from Avatar, Matrix series, Total Recall, Tron, Lucy, and many others are inspired by this one single movie. But it is only by current technology that this movie made possible. Try to google Ghost in The Shell. It was 1989 movie, and human kind simply had no technology to shoot that something so complex, until now. Anyway, that "they created me, but they can not control me" is not Robot. Motoko is not robot in any way. She's a ghost with prosthetic body, in cyberbrain. In other word, She's a human, with machine capabilities, and able to tap on wireless access, satellite access,, and communicate and exchange data using her cyberbrain. But she's human, inside and out.

I think if you watch this trailer more objectively rather than just focusing on the original Ghost in the Shell story, it looks like it is still possible to be good. I think people have a wrong expectation that this is the exact same Ghost in the Shell that you already know. Most comic book movies aren't very accurate either but plenty are still good or at least okay.

Approachable is not the worry, it's the fact they've made The Major a victim here with some weird double crossing back story. The original story was fine, She kicks ass, Project 2501 helps her decide on what to do. It was straight forward and let you think deeply about it inside of the boundaries.

Getting pretty excited. The visuals looks awesome. My only complaint is that, from her dialogue in the trailers she seems to be playing The Major a little too "omg I'm so sad because they put my brain inside a super human cyborg body." The Major never really came off that way in the original. She should be confident, fearless, inspire loyalty and enjoy her work.

This already looks very faithful to the manga and anime, with many scenes being placed in the trailer that almost mirror scenes from the animated franchise. If you don't realise that, then you clearly aren't aware of the original work. The creator of the manga copied aspects of robocop, when creating the manga, hence the similarities, which is not Hollywoods fault.

The story is copied from stand alone complex with some minor changes, so you are wrong about that. If you are hating on this movie, then you surely haven't seen the whole franchise and are just an incompontent weeaboo, who hasn't seen anything other than the original movie. If you had, then you would realise the sheer detail and care taken to transfer storylines from the anime franchise to live action. Yes the movie lacks in obvious philosophical themes, however I feel as though the movie contains many underlying ones, which a lot of the audience (including the critics) are too dumb to even start to perceive. These themes include whether a cyborg/robot has the same status as a human and the same ability to give consent, given the fact that they are no longer considered human. If we look at that topic, we could argue that humans are in fact merely biological robots and so we deserve to have consent just as much as the next robot/cyborg along. I think this helps us the audience to really examine within ourselves what really makes us human and what gives us the right to destroy the life of a cyborg, which is very relevant nowadays when you consider what's happening with abortions and people arguing about whether babies have what some would call a soul at that point.

Yes there are cliche moments but hopefully just to draw in people unfamiliar with the franchise. Am I the only one who is excited to see a GitS where section 9 is working against Motoko? To see Motoko go against those who "created" her? Imo it's a breath of fresh air for GitS as a whole and I wouldn't mind this new universe being explored more off the big-screen.

EDIT: I've come to enjoy the original film as much as the live action but my sentiment still mostly stands. I just recently watched it and I concur. I'm not a massive anime fan by any means (I've recently come to enjoy a few here and there) so maybe that's it, but I thought this was way better than the original animated film. Blasphemous, I know, but the plot was just way easier to follow and it didn't suffer from the poor voice acting of the original English dub for Motoko (something that isn't even close to a problem in Stand Alone Complex). I'd love to see sequels to this and Alita: Battle Angel (which is my favorite anime-related anything, period).

Several scenes in this film are exact in visual comparison to the original Ghost in the Shell (1995). Some parts shown in the city are even exact re-creations of the original artwork. Scarlett Johansson does not wear a wig in this film, her own hair was dyed black with blue tips. The body suit that Scarlett Johansson wears in the film as Major's synthetic body, known as the Thermosuit, is made out of silicone. The lights that seem to glow from the Geisha's robes were accomplished by lining the collars of the kimonos with LED lights.

I really like the movie. They went with a new origins story of Major and even tackeled the "what makes us human" part. Sure they took a few scenes from the originals and used them in a different context but overall its a "new" story and we finally learn where Motoko comes from. And yes ive seen the original movies and Stand alone Complex... havent watched 2nd gig or Arise up until now mainly because ive heared somewhere that Arise is a reimagination of the 1995 movie or was it SAC ??? I just saw it and was very satisfied. Don't worry, I won't talk about spoilers. I think the anime and film compliment each other very well. The film answers questions that the anime leaves unanswered and vice versa. Some critics said the film has an incomprehensible plot and lacked heart. These critics must have never seen or cared for the original. Because I found nothing difficult to understand in the plot and I actually think the film had more feeling and emotion than the anime. Only because the actors are real humans and could express emotion naturally. While I liked the new score, I prefer the original score. Also, the film is rated PG-13, so of course the violence was severely toned down from the anime. These are my only complaints of the film.

So much of jpop culture is based around western aesthetics, ffs many of them even get surgery on their eyes to look more western. they turned the self-possessed, determined and iron-willed main character into a run-of-the-mill western cliché, who is looking to recover her lost past, doubting the decisions that made her who she is, taking away all the agency any incarnation of Major Kusanagi had, turning her into a wide-eyed Hollywood doll. They made her seem naive and weak here. But the major is smart, determined and is almost never confused. And the dialogue I've seen so far is pretty weak I have a strong feeling there's going to be no social commentary, no corporate-state espionage, no moral dilemma. I like the visuals, the set-pieces, the updated futuristic gadgets but that doesn't make a good movie. Maybe I'll swallow my words with the film turning out to be great and fitting into the gits mythology, but based on these trailers... yikes at best it'll be fine but what's the point of making a "fine" movie. You have great source material
@Nila1337
@Nila1337 7 жыл бұрын
Major Kusanagi was also "weak" at some point in the original GitS movie from 1995. Take a look at the tank scene. Batou saved her life. There is also a quote from Togusa: "Tough chick needs backup? Since when did she ever need a hand?". My main concern is the lack of philosophical depth in this movie. Where is Arthur Koestler, Frederick Jameson, Simon Blackburn?? Did they read "The Ghost in the Machine"? Our world, here and now, with the rise of very complex A.I. systems, big data and artificial neural networks provides great source material, too.

yeah but during that scene she was being a badass and was never doubting herself, she didnt run she took that tank on with the equivalent of a peashooter and literally pulled herself apart in an effort to kill it. she never looked weak once, even when she was lying broken on the floor.

I think they dropped the ball hard on this story. there was always so much intrigue with the series and the 1995 movie that was lost in this movie. This movie essentially became robocop, 2014, the plots and beats are basically the same. most of the side plots i wasn't drawn to not even the strange romance thing that went on.

a few malcontents who live on the internet were angry that she wasn't asian. not joking. they didn't understand that she is an android with a japanese girls brain inside her, in this version. she doesn't have a cyberbrain like in the cartoon movie or 2000s cartoon series. it's a good adaptation of the series but unfortunately is pretty shallow, doesn't delve into any of the existential or philosophical conflicts especially found in the cartoon movies. that is a problem as it stays in a WB-teen drama level storyline with some over empathetic woman doctor's maternal instincts guiding her every action to save motoko from feeling she's being used. so many of the characters are either one dimensional and obnoxious or just completely sidelined and useless. or unbearable and abrasive like the new female squad member who is just shoehorned in to check some boxes. but it's nothing like say the Eragon movie which is how NOT to do an adaptation.
@ianswift3521
@ianswift3521 Жыл бұрын
oh also some people actually thought it was too woke, since they race-flipped Borma and Ishikawa, and added some random vaguely ethnic woman character who doesn't appear in any of the comics, tv shows, or cartoon movies. And they give this new character nearly all the lines and interactions with squadmates, I don't recall Borma ever saying a single word for the entire movie. He might have said one line when they introduce all the squad in the virtual meeting room. The best secondary character in the movie was Togusa as the actor knew Ghost In The Shell and understood the character. In the behind the scenes and bonus features he's the only one, everyone else had no idea, even Scarlett Johansson. So instead of stripping down the amount of characters they inexplicably added a new one, which was not needed whatsoever. In fact they should've dropped a few of the characters who literally do nothing. Saito is also heavily ignored. He appears in less than 2 minutes screen time and I don't think he says much of anything beyond the initial meeting scene where he's lying on a couch.
