It throws off actually metrics about the economy as lots of job openings typically signals a healthy economy. I know it’s not the only metric, but it does factor in which is a huge problem. They did this to my partner - he filled out a multi page application form and went through two rounds of interviews. The interviews kept being rescheduled and one time the interviewer just didn't show up. Only for them to tell him that the job wasn't happening but they would keep his details "for next time". Then they said there is another (extremely similar) position available but he would have to apply again from the beginning. He said he would be happy to be considered for the other position but why can't they use his information from the first rounds of interview? They ghosted him after that.

I've worked in Corporate for over 30 years and these type of 'ghost' jobs have always existed since the 80s. The real reason these type of job listings exist is because the government gives incentives for creating jobs and tax exemptions on the back end if they filled x amount of jobs. Companies get away with it because there's no regulations behind fact-checking whether the company has a legitimate job available to the public. It definitely needs to be addressed!!

I ran across a lot of ghost jobs while searching for employment and it is so disheartening when you apply, apply, apply and nobody either calls you or replies or anything because it’s just a waste of time and in this economy, time is precious and time is money. Rent and bills creeps up on you fast and to be stuck behind a computer screen, hoping and praying that SOMEONE will give you a chance gets depressing.

I’m still trying to figure out why companies are doing that. It should be 100% illegal. Here in Michigan it’s bad. I have never had issues finding work but I noticed around March 2023 I would go in for interviews and management offered me the position. As soon as I left I wait on my onboard email. Instead, I receive a rejection email right after I interview and was promised a role. The employer here also mentions URGENTLY HIRING, but…. When you apply, they never even review your application or if they do, no interviews are scheduled even when you send them a message, it’s ignored. There have to be a reason why companies are doing this. What is really the reason. There HAVE TO BE A REASON WHY EVERY JOB DOES THIS? Perhaps to keep the job reports up to date by publishing false positions that never existed. Here in Michigan also, employers will interview you but reject you days later stating a position was filled when it was never open in the first. That should be illegal

I think it could be a list of things: - Showing you are hiring means your business is successful and needs more people -It helps manipulate the job market for possible future employees. As in if people see a bunch of job openings but rarely hear back, in the future they will accept a lower salary because they see how hard it is to find an actual job. -It helps keep their current employees loyal if they start applying to other places behind the employers back and realizing they rarely hear back from them

There are also scammers too. My workplace had a UX/UI web development position that we were looking for, but scammers took that job posting and placed it elsewhere to pretend to be us so they can do check scams. We know this for sure because one guy who got scammed came to our office and I had to strongly advise for him to not cash the check and to report it. We already reported it on our end, but we cannot do much else.

Another reason for ghost jobs--they might be running the ad just for EEOC purposes, having already filled the job. They might hire a lot of people short-term and want a bank of resumes of people they can call right away when there are openings. OTOH, some real jobs can take months to fill. There might be lots of applicants, but IME, 98% are from people with absolutely no qualifications for that job. You put them through a test to do something as simple as a business letter and they're completely lost. Networking--my employer offers $5,000-$10,000 referral bonuses, and even so, we hardly ever hire anyone that way.

The problem is time and energy. I wouldn't care so much if it was just a case of firing off a generic resume and cover letter and didn't hear back. But quite often you're expected to fill out a multi-part application form, quizzes and sometimes they even schedule actual interviews. While you are wasting your time on the fake job interview process, other possibly real opportunities are passing you by. Then after being strung along and ghosted, you get discouraged and burned out and don't have much energy to apply for other jobs.

Can absolutely confirm. I work in HR at a large public University in the US, and like 85% of the time, the hiring manager already knows who they want to hire prior to posting the requisition. However, b/c the person they want to hire more often than not does not have any exceptional experience and/or educational accolades, they must also go through the standard candidate process. Whole time the hiring manager is interviewing 3 and 4 ppl for the role (b/c they are required to due to EEOC guidelines) they already know who they wanna hire. This is why it is different to obtain mid-level positions and above. It’s nepotism at its finest and it absolutely sucks.

3:31 fact I worked for company and taught AI my job. We would just correct the mistakes AI made by highlighting the correct part green and the incorrect parts yellow. With in a year the program could complete thousands of accounts a day compared a single employee who could only complete 100 or so. After two years this position was no longer needed. But the third year we were fired. I am currently working a position that I can see AI can work easily. The company has started making comments that they are looking into AI. I don’t feel secure I have seen this happen before

There was a time that I applied for 147 jobs, some required testing before approval to apply (talk about time consuming). I constantly receive alerts for jobs in my area daily from job boards, and companies I've never heard of. Turns out these companies are NEVER in my town! I ended up taking a job with a one hour commute. I'm still trying to find something local - it's so darn difficult.

Ghost jobs are nothing more than a waste of time for mainly job seekers. I hate waisting time filling job applications that I know that I qualify for and waiting for a response. I pour so much time into my master's degree, only to wait for nothing. I feel cheated. I'm fortunate to still have work, but it makes me wonder why I've worked so hard and gave up so much spare time for college, only to face the same situation that I wanted to avoid in the first place. I would rather be engaged in my hobbies and loved ones than wasting my time on job applications that employers are not even trying to hire. Job searching shouldn't even feel like an unpaid job.😢

It's corporate America cooking their books. Depending on their structure, branches might get a larger budget overhead if they have a higher employee count, even if positions are unfilled. Government does this a lot. Job security as well for entrenched management/leadership. They also like to scrape by on a bare minimum of labor if not already obvious. Reminds me of 2012 when "the economy recovered" from the recession and the same phenomenon occured. Interest rates are dropping as well, so they wanna look good on paper for the loans.

At my job, I have seen them post up job listings but then either hire internally or just have people double up in jobs (I have been trained in my coworker's job because they didn't want to hire and train another person for a particular job that gives people trouble.)It's pretty frustrating, especially since people are leaving and a lot of older staff are taking extended leave for medical reasons (sometimes not coming back if you get what I mean).

Some of these jobs can’t even be fulfilled by AI because you need to be in person for them. So, I while AI might be part of the issue, I think this is just something a lot of companies are adopting.

Now it’s gotten me thinking I don’t do enough to show that I’m qualified to work. Makes me feel like have done something wrong, what could I have done differently, and find out why I never get jobs I want. I have 2 degrees and it’s a goddamn shame that my ability to pay bills are based on whether a job is fake or not or whether I’m qualified for the ones I apply for. Pathetic!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I've been trying for 2 years, since i left highschool, i never got anything back, even if i applied straight on the company's website, most of the time the job got taken down in a few days and reposted in a few weeks. Ghost jobs also kept the interest rates higher longer, because the feds could not lower interest rates till the job market cool down, which kept inflation increased. Plus it is just annoying and lowers the jobless self esteem by getting rejected. When there was no job anyway.

If companies won’t offer better pay or benefits (or even hire-instead just play "ghosting" games with job openings), then let robots take over. We’re done working for devalued money that feels like board game cash in this inflated market. Employers' money doesn’t motivate anymore-let the robots do it all. Work just isn’t worth the squeeze anymore. According to the latest stats, many Americans are now officially paying to work-crazy as it seems. They’re going into debt because their pay isn’t covering basic expenses such as housing, gas, and food.

Not only do companies post ghost jobs, there are also biases employers have. There people who experimented with submitting resumes to see how many responses they get. The resumes would have small changes, changes in use of keywords, some change in layout, some change just the name of the applicant, but they had similar content and skills. This was to see what aspects of a resume companies are more responsive to. Part of the intent was to see how important "cultural diversity" is taken into account with hiring. The result: resumes with ethnic or non-Caucasian sounding names were less likely to be responded to. If your experience comes from less known companies and organizations, you will also be less likely to get a response. It's stacked against new workers entering the job market and people who don't have Caucasian names.
