Absolutely love the original Ghostbusters, it's a shame a lot of people ignored it after "angry gamers" put it down, when they need to know it's a business simulator, not an action game. But the Master System version is the best port by far, cut out a load of the unesserary stuff. There's also a pretty good pseudo-remake on the DS.
@PixelsLtd6 жыл бұрын
Yes the Master System version is great, still regularly replay that one, whereas I find the other ones either frustrating, boring or both!
@Larry6 жыл бұрын
@@PixelsLtd Totally, Compile developed that one if I recall, (who also made Puyo Puyo) Can't believe how much they dropped the ball on the NES version though, AND it was released a year AFTER the excellent Master System version!!!
@KasumiKenshirou6 жыл бұрын
Why do people always blame James Rolfe when people don't like something crappy with the Ghostbusters name on it? I spent a lot of my childhood playing the C-64 version. It's just not a very fun game. I only played it as much as I did back then because I had a lot more free time as a kid, most of the other games of the time (especially on the C-64) were just as bad or worse as Ghostbusters, and I didn't have an NES. I had already formed my own opinion about this game decades before AVGN or any of his copycats existed. I have nostalgic memories of playing it as a kid, but have no desire to revisit it; someone who wasn't alive in the 1980s isn't going to enjoy playing this. This isn't a classic and has not withstood the test of time. Everyone knows its a "business simulator". That's not what most people want from a Ghostbusters game. A child won't want to play this. An adult can replicate this experience by doing their taxes and taking a break every once in a while to play Space Invaders and vacuum the floor. The number of people that would enjoy this game is the same amount as those who would want to watch a "Louis Tully: A Ghostbusters Story" prequel
@PixelsLtd6 жыл бұрын
Larry Bundy Jr Ah didn't know it was Compile! Yeah the NES one is probably the worst version I've played, shame its the one most Americans would know...

The Famicom version has the ending screen programmed in but it doesn't show because of a programming error. It was already in English, with the only difference being that it had an additional spelling error. (It said "a grate game" instead of "a great game".)

An excellent video! The thing about Ghostbusters was that it was one of the earliest examples of a Rogue Like game in that if you succeeded in saving New York, your cash was transferred across and you could carry that on into another game, giving you a lot more cash to spend on vehicles and upgrades. There is a lot more to the game than you gave it credit as the catching of ghosts needed to be timed and the crossing of streams was a big no-no. If you had a PK meter you could drive around the city blocks, detecting the presence of ghosts and you needed a ghost visual enhancer to stop them from flickering about when you tried to catch them. Finally it is possible to lose by letting Mr Staypuft smash up New York, resulting in such a massive bill that you cannot pay. Oh no, Octav1us is going to vomit now!

OMG. I remember heading to the local computer shop and this running on his C64. It actually spoke and sang a song. This was a revelation, I would have paid any money but they had dropped by and loaded the game up and the demo ran all day. It wasn't a bad game when all is said and done, tie in's didn't have a great reputation for gameplay and wanting to play again at the time. I would watch a lot more of your videos Octav1us but it's like you almost seek out the poorest or most obscure games from the 80's to play and review. No shame in covering popular stuff with your spin on it. Now that would be worthy viewing if ever there was such a thing.

I think because home video releases were new, and it took about a year for a home video release to come out, that could have coincided with a lot of late video game tie in releases and would have maintained the hype and/or interest up through when the cartoon series came out in '86.

There was a glitch in the C64 version (at least in the U.S.) that I couldn’t help exploit: position the left Ghostbuster facing away from the trap, then snag the ghost with the right GB’s stream and move all the way left. Even though the ghost is now pinned all the way to the left, it magically transports right above the trap when you trigger it.
