It could have been an interesting anti piracy measure if Gideon could call you for pirating the game on your first meeting with him but you could still play the game until the boss fight with him where he would say he can't let a pirate become an Elden Lord. He would be invincible and every attack would one shot you,preventing you from reaching the endgame.
