I'm looking forward to seeing used RTX 3090 cards on eBay in 2 years in "mint" condition. The problem is no matter what you do, these GDDR6X modules run over 100 °C when mining which throttles the cards under the compute workload so it doesn't even yield as much as one would expect. Also, how long can it be run over 100 degrees until it dies? Time will tell. EDIT: Verified this myself on ROG Strix 3090.

Thanks for this overview; I feel much better about my Gaming OC 3090 now. It plots a solid 1860 when undervolted and runs cool and quiet. It seems like it will be a solid card (which it has been) that will keep me from looking for other variants for better performance
@kiwiasian3 жыл бұрын
I think the real strength of the 3090 is that once undervolted it can drop about 20% in power consumption, allowing it to boost higher with the set power budget. At 0.865v my middle of the road MSI 3090 stays at 1950mhz for hours at a time gaming, drawing “only” 320w.
@nicholasvinen3 жыл бұрын
Yes you absolutely have to undervolt as it lets you get more performance within the otherwise restrictive power budget. Unless you have very bad luck and or buy the worst brand, you can easily knock about 50W off max load without any loss of stability.

It is interesting that the Gaming OC manages to pull up to 395w on two 8 pins. Spec would say it should max out at 375. And the Xtreme Waterforce somehow only got 2 8 pins, while the air version gets 3. Pretty confounding why they would give the inferior model access to more power.

Hi Steve, I did a teardown of my Aorus Xtreme RTX3080 and was very disappointed by the mistakes made by the assembler with the thermal transfer pads (worse than in your teardown here), but also the copper base has these raised bumps all over it, including many of them on the raised square that contacts the GPU. By lapping these down to a flat surface, I dropped a whopping 5-6 degC in temps. Though not doing a whole lot for OC headroom, it now purrs along at significantly lower noise and temperature. Quality control is an issue with Gigabyte these days in my opinion, and something their eSupport system has literally not even provided a response to (at least when I told them about the thermal pads). I also have a Gigabyte monitor, case, motherboard, and have been buying their gear for 20 years, but am so disappointed that I think it's time to end this loyalty once and for all. Rubbish software I can tolerate and find alternatives for. Terrible QC even on cards nearing AU$2k? Not good enough.

I went from a Gigabyte 2080Ti Aorus Extreme to a Gigabyte 3080 Aorus Master ( same cooler and dimensions as the 3080 Extreme and the 3090 Extreme seen here in the video ), and I was surprised they did not include the separate aluminum GPU support stand any longer, knowing the new card is even bigger and more heavy. Now the card is not horizontal any more. A bit of a shame for the price tag. I don't understand the inconsistency in their products.

Not sure about the Gaming OC but I've heard the VRAM on the Aorus Xtreme overheats and can be easily and effectively rectified by tossing some stick-on copper heatsinks with airflow on the backplate where the VRAM is. Apparently around a 20C drop in temps, and allows for OCing headroom and less throttling. Mileage may vary, I'm sure.

My memory only hits 88C max this way, I reduce wear on my fans and I greatly reduce the risk of memory degradation with these settings. You would think I'm losing a ton of money not doing +1000 on the memory, but I'm really not. It's 90MHs vs 97MHs. Not worth the added wear on my card. I also only run it from the time I go to sleep (10pm to about 330-430pm the next day when I get home from work)

TLDR: gigabytes quality control should be notified if this was not your own fault the paste application left a huge chunk of the gpu die with 0 tim coverage 100% spread is vital to any exposed die due to there being no intigrated heat spreader and the dies being full from edge to edge of components that being said the "pea/grain of rice" method is no good anymore the gpu looked like it was not completely covered by thermal paste the one corner looked like it did not have any on it not sure if it came that way from gigabyte but if it did i would reapply the tim from edge to edge of the die and re test because it looked to me like the thermal dead zone was causing the rest of the gpu to overheat with the bare die being exposed with no tim and yes absolutely with the way these things are made the "pea" method can kill a gpu it happened a few times to buildzoid even fried the memory controller on an rx graphics card because of exposed die not sure if this was a fault on you guys improperly applying the tim or if that was gigabytes stock application but it can be the difference between a cool gpu or an overheating gpu

Hey, so I have the master version and I found out that the thermal pads and paste are absolute trash. I replaced them and the card is much quieter and cooler. Maybe you guys can do something similar?

I did it to my Aorus waterforce xtreme 1080Ti and noticed better temps too, though I did use Conductonaut on the GPU lol.

I might have to do this. My 3080 xtreme hits below 65c on the chip but the vram tops 86c. Unlike HU, mine pushes 2150mhz+ average on an OC

@@barronhelmutschnitzelnazi2188 my vram hotspot uses to hit 108,after the new pads it doesn't go past 80. Even while mining

@@TheSaadtut sheesh 108 is way up there. I'm debating on swapping mine but not sure if warranty would be voided

Great vid as always, but steve, 2500k 2600k 1 decade anniversary benchmarks? ;) 10 years on it will be fun to see if the i7 2600k is still a 60 fps capable cpu on the newest titles, truly a golden chip that one.

I doubt the die area is being the limiting factor here. Could be oversatutrated heat pipes, the fans not delivering enough pressure to cool all the way down the fin stack. Water coolers would perform about the same if the transfer between baseplate and gpu is the limiting factor.

Not compared to high end 3080s?

This Aorus Xtreme and the XFX Merc cards are so freaking huge. And now guess what. Sapphire is rumoured to bring back the Toxic and Atomic models with the RX 6000 series.

be interesting to see the power v frequency curve. They seem to be quite far out from a linear response. How much extra power did nVidia have to put in to get them performing as they are.
