That is what I would probably recommend, AoT first season hits hard and fast, it is an action packed roller coaster with amazing choreography. Death Note is easy to grasp, with amazing story, memorable characters and very reminiscent to a lot of Hollywood movies. But what I would do is just asking someone what their favorite genre is and recommend a good anime in that category. At the end anime is just a medium to share stories, just like movies and books.

Definitely. Best first episode ever, No filler, great story and plot twist, great animation. Naruto, OP, HxH and Kekaishi is what hooked me into anime, but I won't torture any newcomer with fillers.

In my opinion Summertime Render is solid alternative (at least) for Wild card category. It is very high quality in general, hits hard from the first episode, has a minimum of fanservice and is not very long. And the main thing is that it is a mix of several genres, so it can appeal to a wide range of people.

Since you asked if this type of content is liked or general recommendation videos, I think I liked the idea of you giving different "levels" of accessibility. Maybe you could do some easy videos of like, "Here's the level 1 for romance anime recommendations, then level 2 once you're already familiar with anime and these shows, then level 3 for the deep cuts that are still really worth watching." I'd definitely click on those just to see what I've already watched, and also add anything I'm missing to my backlog!

AOT does not deserve so much hate, I was sad seeing so many L's while he said aot. It's an amazing show, without any anime bs, brilliant story, amazing characters, insane animation(It has a 10/10 animation till season 3 if we don't include the brief cgi colossal titan, it went down to 8.5-9 in the later seasons but still great), 10/10 action, amazing overshadowing, it's close to perfect and one of the best ever in my opinion. All these haters saying L are just pissed at the ending which I don't know about because I am an anime only but even if the ending is horrendous, It will just make it an 8.5-9 show instead of 10 for me. It doesn't deserve all of the hate it gets, it's not cool to hate on it.

Yeah, I feel the same way about Game of Thrones. GoT was a show that many called the greatest TV of all-time. It had a subpar season or 2 and a bad ending and now people call it F tier because it’s cool to do. I still give Got and AoT 10/10 ratings because they hit legendary highs. I could understand an 8/10 or a 9/10. I just don’t understand how some people can take shows like that from a 10 to a 1 after a poor episode or season.

I started anime in December 2021 and my first anime was Attack on Titan. Just like garnt said it opened the floodgates and since then i have completed very long series such as one piece , naruto, bleach , black clover, drangon ball, hunter x hunter etc. And dozens of movies and short anime with 12 - 24 episode. Honestly I'm just glad this addresses probably my biggest issue with Michael's recommendations, which is that there's absolutely no variety. If you're trying to get someone into this medium you want to show them the full scope of what is has to offer, give them multiple recommendations with different kinds of storytelling across different genres. Let them see what resonates with them and then give them more recommendations based off what they do or don't like. If people have been turned off of anime already, it's likely because the mainstream shonen that they've been exposed to in the past haven't been appealing to them, so trying to convince them to power through hundreds of episodes of something they don't like on the promise that "it'll be worth it" or "it gets good" is an extremely hard sell.

I think Cowboy Bebop is the absolute safest choice that 99% of people will at LEAST like. The success of The Mandalorian defeats Gigguk's argument. I think another factor to consider is suggesting a show that demonstrates what anime can give that other mediums of entertainment cannot. With that in consideration: AOT, Mob Psycho 100, FMAB are also good picks in my opinion.

So, fun story with regards to 1:20:17; the tldr is that I accidentally ended up getting my grandmother to start watching (and enjoying) Eva on a whim when she has no prior anime experience (to my knowledge). For context, I'm out on a road trip with the grandparents to celebrate my high school graduation (we've been through many states at this point and finally headed back). As such, I've been texting my relatives back home over the course of the trip - my parents, my sister, and the other set of grandparents (unrelated to the ones that took me on this road trip). I'm in the car on the road, as one is, and listening to a video essay on Evangelion's release in the US (by Zinnbuster, great video and channel, go sub to him). This reminds me that I don't own a physical copy of Eva, and I'm suddenly compelled to go looking online for the Platinum Collection set of DVDs - because I'm bored. I find a listing from this guy on eBay, with a quality of "like new" and decently priced to boot! But of course, I realize this is all kinda crazy - DVDs are unfortunately growing more obsolete as time goes on, and I certainly don't have a traditional DVD player, so I'd really just be buying this set just to have it. I'm not really a collector of anime merch, as it were, but my love for Evangelion is really tempting me to buy this box set. Of course, though, it's on eBay, and that requires me to communicate with the seller - which, truth be told, I'd rather avoid if I can help it. So I'm talking to my grandmother back home, right? I go off about this DVD dilemma - never name-dropping the series itself, just sort of elaborating as to how wild it is that I could love a show so much that I'd want to buy this box set of a show on a near obsolete media format. As one would, she naturally inquires about the show in question - and now I have to explain to my grandmother what a Neon Genesis Evangelion is. So I do as best as I can without spoiling the series or anything. Teenage kids, giant robots, space aliens, devolves into psychoanalytical stuff and every main character is depressed. She finds it interesting. So then she decides to Google the show, I'd suppose. (She apparently reads somewhere that Shinji has Asperger's. Not sure that's confirmed canon but it's whatever.) And then she decides "well, then, how about I watch it." She reportedly watches 3 episodes (off of Netflix because it's convenient). Her reaction to it all? "Interesting!" And not in a bad way! Not only that, she appears to be planning to both finish the show in dub (which, Netflix dub, kinda unfortunate but it's what it's), and then go back and REWATCH it in sub. All this was about a week ago, and I haven't received any updates as to her progress since. (I did get to rant to her about the Fly Me to the Moon removal though. She loves the song so I'd guess the feeling is maybe mutual.) I'm not sure if she's continued the show or not, but my big takeaway from this was that I got someone I knew into Evangelion, that someone was my grandmother of all people, AND it was her very first anime! (No, I dunno if she's aware of End of Eva. I can't even imagine what her reaction would be. Also the eBay listing I had my eyes on sold - not that it matters much to the story, but it's a nice bookend methinks.) Thus concludes this silly little rant in your comments section. I hope anybody who sees this finds it decently entertaining, and takes away the lesson that no show is impossible to recommend! :D (Or Evangelion is just an anomaly. Probably not though.)

This maybe a bit niche but we recommend Girls und Panzer and GATE to Military nerds back in the days. And it ended up being their first anime. Also I can understand Alan's recommendation. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is so great even for a UC Timeline standards. The mecha animation, the soundtrack, the background landscape, all perfect. Garnt just assuming that people nowadays just have the attention span of a goldfish lmao. There's a reason why Shounen anime is usually the best choice to start watching anime, its their story, characters, themes, music and power system and world-building. Any shounen you pick, has a mix of everything that interests a new viewer. Its bright and dark, serious and funny, innocent and lewd, simple and complex. It has so much contrasting tones and themes in one show. Also, if person loves that anime, they will keep watching it, no matter how long it is.

My persona picks, in the order of the categories in the video, is as follows: Attack on Titan (amazing choice on Garnt's end also, perfect for a quick intro into anime, it quickly disperses stereotypes like "Cartoons are for children! Plot for dumb kids! Creepy asian cartoons made by perverts!") Yu Yu Hakusho (an older title, but encompasses everything a shonen needs to be, also I had people get into anime with JJK or MHA and then fall off from it bc they found out the stories are not finished and they have to wait for the next seasons) Death Note (absolute classic, low fat high protein) One Punch Man (the best choice in the category, short and highly entertaining) Your Lie in April (Silent Voice and AnoHana good too) Cowboy Bebop (I disagree with it being not being ok because it's episodic, because the whole idea of rating these shows is to choose the best starters) Oregairu/Snafu (amazing story, encapsulated into a highly-entertaining highschool drama that doesn't feel dumbed down for the children in the audience) Spy X Family (ultimate choice, before this one the category would be very hard to fill without anime bullshit involved) Dr. Stone (I captivated my father with this one, he really enjoys saying Yuzuriha xD) My Neighbour Totoro (I never managed to convince my mother into trying any anime ever, but I'd expect her to enjoy a Ghibli movie while taking care of my little sibling, second choice would be Violet Evergarden) Kakegurui (a wild card indeed, very stylized show with a lot of inuendos hidden into it's gambling premise) Re:Zero (a lot of anime bullshit sprinkled through, but it's clear that most of it comes from the socially-stunted protagonist, still fairly enjoyable) Hands off Eizouken (great highschool show with a zanny feel, with a mild feel of Ed Edd and Eddy in the best of ways) K-On (or Yuru Camp, or Bocchi the Rock, or Machikado Mazoku, this really strains my list as I don't usually watch these kinds of shows) My bonus rounds: Comedy: Grand Blue (really hard to find an actually funny show for a western audience) Horror: Perfect Blue (a classic, also horror sucks most of the time xD) Mistery: Durarara! (very hard to watch as an unexperienced watcher, a simple "The episodes are scrambled and you have to understand what happened" goes a long way, Stein's Gate goes here too, kinda hard to make a really well thought out mistery show, and these gimmicks make them better) Sports: Haikyuu! (Garnt is right about peope choosing to watch a reall match instead of an anime about the sport, but unfortunately nobody really cares about volleyball) Mature: Devilman Crybaby (goes into horror too, this one is spicy)

I know it was 2015 but back then my starter anime was all of the long shonen that Garnt would not recommend. Either consciously or unconsciously, I wanted to watch all the longest shows first before moving into the shorter shows. Also this is the teenage mindset maybe at work here. I recommend watching all the long shows, if u want, before 22 when then the decrease in free time makes watching seasonal and finsihed 12-24 episode series easier to watch.

While I think AoT is great I think it's actually much better to watch a bit later once you are used to anime and pay much more attention to it. It's an okay starter but it can be much more. I think Death Note is definitely the one that i would personally choose as an introduction, it eases the viewer into a lot of anime stuff without being too jarring. While staying fairly interesting throughout it's entire runtime. In the end it just depends on what the individual likes.

I actually disagree with not recommending Monster. It could easily be passed off as a western show, that just happens to be in japanese. If someone is into mystery, true crime, drama I can hardly think of anything better than Monster. Sure, it's a niche pick for a specific taste, but I think it sets up a solid mystery and drama by episode 4. People say it's a slow start, but I think it never really takes off. Rather it just slowly builds like a jigsaw puzzle until everything falls into place, then it ends. It's not supposed to be exciting/action packed and I think that's a perfect pick for quite a few people.

I don't like AOT especially the later seasons but it is definitely something that will get you going when you are starting. It not only hit fast in just the first 3 episodes, it makes you want to see more. Any shounen above 50 episode should not be recommending as a starter since they take long to get going and usually quite a turn off trying to get through the first 10plus episodes and more for most, FMAB might be a masterpiece overall but it's a show that doesn't explain what's going on as well as JJK. JJK explain the power system, the enemies, the situation and it doesn't leave you hanging thinking what is going on as it usually answers the question you have in mind in the next scene. I don't really know if death note is a good start for psychology, it's good but the second half feels long. Erased feels like a better starter than death note but both are good. Romance anime: Toradora if you want Series, Your Name for movie . Love is war leans too much towards slice of life so it's can become quite a snooze after the first 2 season
