Guts from berserk? he is obviously just simply an anti-hero who tries to overcome his problems. punpun from goodnight punpun? obviously just a kid who experiences bad stuff and becomes depressed. I don't take the characters from steins gate to be one dimensional, they show change throughout the show and I also felt a change in myself through watching the series because of me relating to the characters.

Bro seeing Dr. Stone and Food Wars on the same tier as 7 Deadly sins hurts. They might not be the best, but they do something thats different enough than your typical power fantasy that makes it stand out. They made a lot of people develop in interest in Science and the Culinary Arts. Dr. Stone has shown that were only getting started, with the reveal of Why Man in the current season. Food wars is harder to defend, but the first 2 seasons are hella entertaining.

Its cool that you like it but imo 7DS is one of the most generic shonen I've read, and the "narrative" is practically non existent. Mothers Basement did a good job of breaking down the tropes and awful writing in the series.

The thing about Steins;Gate 0 and the movie is that they're completely optional content. The original series was well wrapped up, because it showed the main route. 0 isn't there to be fan service, or to tack on another season for the hell of it. It's there for fans of the anime that wanted to see some of the routes where Okabe failed to save Kurisu. The visual novel 0 is based on is the same. You don't need to play it to get a complete package, but if you had that itch wondering what happened in the future without Kurisu, it's there to scratch that itch.

I didn't love parasute myself. The show has no definite plot, and just goes anywhere. The ending is just random, nothing special. The overall theme of the show was mentioned in the ending it was actually probably decided at last moment. At least it felt that way. On the other hand, I feel like Toradora is a well deserved romcom, and one thing that sticks about the fandom is that they absolutely, absolutely love Toradora. Toradora is either in top5 animes of all times or nowhere at all, in people's lists

Parasyte was easy to like but hard to love. It lacked a distinct style, the use of 3-D is just plain indefensibly bad, and I really didn't like the music. Music is a huge part of anime enjoyment to me as remembering the songs is a big part of remembering the show's emotional peaks, so not liking the music hurt the show a lot for me because the big moments didn't stick in my mind long after the show's end. It was enjoyable while I watched it but I struggle to remember any big pivotal scenes like I do with other anime, so it'll never be one of my favorites and I'm sure many other anime fans feel the same.

Many monthly manga maintained their relevance for years like one punch man, chihayafuru and attack on titan just to name a few. When s1 ended, I noticed, most who liked the show were mainly talking about the anime. I rarely see anyone talk about the manga. That's probably part of the reason. But the manga is still popular in japan. It's definitely the main reason season 3 was greenlit.

@@dragon-kun199 The letter writing premise is unique, and it's kyo-ani at their animation finest, but for an anime about "a -empty vessel- girl learning life through others through pain, loss, joy, love, and finding herself" there was actually another anime in the same season that I felt hit those marks better - Sora Yori (A Place Further than the Universe), which is sadly underwatched. Keep in mind that Garnt kept Violet in the "Deserved" category, which I agree with. VE has been great, but between the standout Episodes 7 and 10 there are some episodes that came off somewhat weaker.

Psycho pass season 1 was seriously amazing. The characters were amazing. The antagonist/anti-hero was so compelling and had a genuine theory/philosophy that was "correct". I can cite close to a dozen of really relevant female characters in Fairy Tail that had their own moments, their own backstory and even their own arcs for some. For stuff like Naruto there's Sakura + Tsunade and that's it and they are not relevant AT ALL outside of plot-related stuff. One Piece was the same at the time, apart from Nami and Robin (which again were mostly there for plot-related progression) there was simply little to no female character lead in this manga. This mattered a lot, I remember being able to talk about Fairy Tail with girls in middleschool/highschool which was absolutely not the case for many other shows. Girls actually watched Fairy Tail at the time for this reason

Like lots of people after season 1 said it was good but the world still had some much for to explore, even though we’ll it does that’s not the point of season 1 and it’s perfect the way it is. Season 2 proves us this was the case as even with it adding stuff it makes it clear season 1 was perfect the way it is. Like I still enjoy all the other stuff after season 1 but like when ranking my favourite anime only really includes season 1 as not only was it a complete story that we’ll still has more to explore is not necessary but ever thing after was not even that bad or offensive enough to ruin season 1.

The Parasyte take is just awful. It feels like he must have just wrote the show off as "dubstep music lol" and barely paid attention when watching it cause I don't know how anyone would boil it down to "MC gets OP hand powers" otherwise. Toradora, for it’s genre, is one of the best. Especially for the drama aspect. There’s barely any anime out there that takes romance into that direction. They’re always comedy heavy. Toradora has a great balance. Just for accomplishing that, I think it’s popularity is at least deserved (though I’d personally say not popular enough). It’s rare that we get a romance drama that makes you emotional without someone dying. And I wouldn’t compare it to something like Kaguya that, again, is very comedy-oriented

For example, Oregairu also falls into the same genre as Toradora, but when it came to romance, it was severely lacking to the point that the romance didn’t feel real or natural (still a great anime). Coming from a romance junky, Toradora did all three best. Golden Time is the only other anime that did it well, but that’s cause it’s the same author. Lol

@@viciousoz4188 Oregairu was truly a shame in the romance aspect, I felt it had potential but the main couple barely showed signs of liking each other, meanwhile the other characters that showed more affection was just destined to lose, that's one of the reasons why I liked Iroha so much, it legit felt like she and Hachiman had more romantic chemistry in a few episodes than an entire season of the main girls. And tbh I'm sucker for a female character that didn't look like a potential heroine and didn't care about the protagonist suddenly changes to a romantic interest. And I need to rewatch Golden Time, I still remember having very mixed feelings about the whole ghost thing, I just think there was better ways of doing that.

Ano Hana is such a good show. Rewatched it like 3 times and every time i feel sad for at least a week and all I can think about is this anime. The only thing that came somewhat close to that, was "I want to eat your pancreas" I'm willing to bet with anyone that they will cry after watching it, even if they try their hardest not to. 100% facts In my country France, which is 2nd biggest manga consumer after Japan, Fairy Tail is absolutely massive. The debate of the big three being a social construct, doesn't even begins in France if you do not include Fairy Tail in the conversation. Entire manga stores have walls of FT compared to other series. Also it was a show that was watch by a ton of girls at the time and many who didn't watched other popular shounen. Because of how good the female character writing good many young girls really connected with the show and that took a massive part in the show's popularity.

For Fairy Tail maybe I can give some explanations to why it is so fucking high First of, the anime is terrible no one is denying that fact. But the manga is lowkey really good and I will stand by that. The manga is one of the greatest shounen series of all time, and the anime absolutely never did it justice. In my country (France, 2nd biggest manga consumer after Japan) Fairy Tail is absolutely massive. Like massive to the point that the "Big 3" was One Piece/Naruto/Fairy Tail and not Bleach during a good part of the late 2000s early 2010s. I don't think many french people use MAL, but if they did Fairy Tail would be easily top 20. Go into any manga store even to this day and I bet you they have a entire wall dedicated to selling Fairy Tail manga when Bleach and Naruto only have a smaller corner. Only One Piece is heads and above FT in terms of sales here. The manga was also massively read by guys and girls alike. And I'm deadass serious, when I was in middleschool/highschool in the early 2010s I was able to talk about Fairy Tail with girls in my class but not about other popular shows. This is IMO mostly do to the fact that the feminine characters are really fucking well-written. And that's surprising for many people that don't know about Fairy Tail because from the outside everybody seems to be talking about the fan service and all of that. But first off, in the manga it wasn't as bad as in the anime, and also it didn't prevented the female characters to be absolutely great and especially in the early 2010s you have to remember how little there was of good female characters in popular mangas. As an example I'm sorry but compare FT to Naruto, it's an absolute no-match between the two, Naruto has basically two to three recurrent and relevant female characters and when I say "relevant" it's only for plot reasons because they were useless as fuck in the combat scenes. FT had almost as many relevant female characters then male ones and they were deep in backstory, useful in fights scenes, had a lot of story linked to them... Like just Erza Scarlet blows out of the water any female lead Naruto ever whish it had. Even compared to One Piece, I'm sorry but apart from Nami and Robin which again are very underused female characters outside of plot progression, do not even play on the same level as FT. That's why the show was popular as fuck. It was one of the only shounen series of the 2000s/2010s that girls could watch and not feel misrepresented. The show is trash compared to the manga yes and yes nowadays you have great female leads in many series, but you cannot deny it represented something different than what the industry standards had to offer at the time. It WAS a great gateway anime, especially to girl that were culturally pushed out of this medium at the time. Like in no freaking world should Fairy Tail be rated LOWER then MHA, Soul Eater, Food Wars, Dr.Stone or SAO for example that's flat out lying to yourself that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, not it being in the same tier as Naruto is a shit take imo.

What's great about YLiA is the amazing animation and accurate depiction of classical musicians with some struggles related to it, the melodramatic ending is just one aspect of it and not what makes it good. It's absolutely deserved. I would say the biggest issue with it was it being set in middle school of all things, like they could have had it set in college and still have the prodigy aspect come across in the show. Most of these I understand his placements, but as a drama enjoyer I'm always disappointed by Garnt's distaste of and bias against drama. Kinda glad Clannad wasn't on there (it falls ~60 based on this list) because I already know where he'd place it having heard his trash taste of it before lol

Making classical music interesting to a broad audience is really impressive imo. Making people care about your story is probably the most difficult thing, especially now with how saturated anime is. Only criticism I would have of it would be how anime the show is lol. During some of the performances they would need to have dramatic audience reactions like it's an anime battle which felt kind of cringe at times.

Euphonium which is a mesmerizing character drama wrapped up in some of the most beautiful classical ensemble performances that stretch for minutes on end without any dialogue and only use visual storyboarding to enforce its mood suffice to say i had exceptionally high expectations for YLIA and they were really not met, so its probably a case of me going into it with the wrong mindset more than anything

@@annaairahala9462 Oh I completely agree with you. Since most of the audience is not familiar with Classical music, they feel a need to tell you how the music should make you feel at certain points. It would be preferable to just hear the music through and have our own interpretation, but that really doesn't work when you are trying to engage an audience. I somewhat prefer Nodame Cantabile because of this even though it's lesser known. Just one example that sticks with me is Emi (?) plays her piece for the first time, Op. 25 No. 11, she is obviously being hyped up as a prodigious player. The blonde kid's teacher is supposedly this huge classical music expert and in the audience. Op. 25 No 11 is one of the most famous pieces in classical music and when she plays the first few soft notes, he does the classic "Is this all you've got" anime trope, before suddenly being blasted by the iconic melody. It's almost like the anime is telling you that woah the piece is going fast you should be impressed now. These are all just minor gripes at the end of the day and I'm glad it seems to inspire many people to get into classical music

I also think it's one of the best thrillers, since It convinced me anyone can die at any given moment. that along with how perfectly themed it was, with a philosophical topic that truly makes you think, made it one of my favorite anime. also the dubstep is surprisingly amazing. only topped by it's fantastic opening.

Honestly, Your Name and Silent Voice are both deserved. To me they are pretty much on equal terms and what separates them and which you prefer probably just comes down to which one resonated with you more... If you experienced bullying growing up for example then a Silent Voice will probably hit a lot harder and closer to home for you, but if you're like me and never really experienced that, and maybe you're a bit of a hopeless romantic, then Your Name will probably resonate more with you. I also think Garnt is onto something in that Your Name was made to be a film, a Silent Voice was adapted to be a film, and as someone who read the manga before the movie came out it's hard for me not to feel a little disappointed given they dropped quite a bit of material. Now I'm not saying the adaptation was bad, far from it, I think it was probably as good as they could have made it without extending the runtime to like 3 hours, but it's still "missing" something that the manga had you know... But, and here's my hot take, Maquia is better than both... There I said it!

@@za-ir5ni It's one of the only anime's that i have seen where the writers actually have the balls to kill characters, which even makes sense in context of the show. Not many anime's do that, so that alone puts it ranks above a lot of anime.

@@Dragonbluey Killing character here and there for the shock value can also deter a character's value. The vast majority of characters in AgK are already cardboard cut out with the most basic of development/background. You got your typical silent girl who actually has a dark past, you got a character that got bullied because she is from lower class of economy, you got character with tragic betrayal, etc. The most outrageous one is probably Tatsumi. He come from some random village that nobody actually care about, when his friends died, he got sad but then immediately thrown into a comedy gag as soon as the Night Raid bring him. I'm all for unique way a story has that others don't really, but the overall execution of AgK is basically just an edgy teenagers who watched Berserk once and think they're mature.

@@za-ir5ni It literally says from the first episode that they aren't heroes and that the most important thing is the mission at hand. Acting like all characters should make it to the end is just what all other anime has taught us, and it just isn't true. Look at any war , look at anything truly heroic. Not everyone lives, and acting like a character dying is for "shock value" is just crazy to me.

Regarding Demon Slayer, my friend keeps bringing up the "No good characters" -argument to slightly clown on me for loving DS. But the very same friend, has Mad Max: Fury Road as one of his favorite movies. So I can finally say that I bested him in an argumentation by saying; "I love Demon Slayer for the same reason you love Mad Max" and he was just like.... "Ok you know what, fair enough"

I genuinely don’t understand what Garnt is trying to convey when he mentions bleach having a lot of chapters. Is he saying a long shonen having more than 500 chapters is bad? If I ask him to remember every arc down to the last detail in one piece and Naruto right now and he doesn’t then I guess that means they’re bad and have bad pacing too?

1:03:40 I disagree with the popular notion that Your Lie In April was just cry bait of the calibre of Clannad or things of the sort. I thought that the whole Kaori ordeal was a really nice way to have the protagonist grow, since it mimicked what happened to his mother. Because of Kaori, he was able to understand and forgive his mother, and thus he finally surpassed his limitations and reached the pinnacle of his musical ability. The show was a lot deeper than people give it credit for, which I feel is ironic, since many complain that Kousei was unrealistically mature for his age

I absolutely agree. Its one of my favorites and i have rewatched it 4 times. It was a joy to see Arima grow as a musician and a person
